We are very pleased to propose this canvas from the second half of the seventeenth century, whose stylistic and composition features reflect the stylistic features of the Neapolitan lesson; the colors are warm, the chromatic range is soft, the quick but precise brushstrokes are elements that lead us, in particular, to the production of Luca Giordano and to the large group of his students.

The rare subject we see depicted is the Shipwreck of St. Paul in Malta, an episode narrated in the Acts of the Apostles [Ac 27: 1-44; 28: 1-14].

Tradition has it that Saint Paul was shipwrecked around 60 AD in Malta, during the journey in which the apostle, along with other prisoners, had to go to Rome to be judged. Persecuted in Jerusalem by the Jews because of his preaching, Paul declared himself a Roman citizen appealing to the emperor Caesar as was his right, who allowed him to move to Rome.

After several days of sailing, his ship was hit by a terrible storm and, when the crew had lost all hope of being saved, the sailors sighted the island of Malta. Although the ship was destroyed after beating violently against the rocks, all the crew managed to reach the shore and save themselves, also thanks to the welcome of the inhabitants.

The bright and clear colorism of the work in question is typical of Neapolitan between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. The composition also betrays the influence of Roman classicism prevailing at the end of the seventeenth century.

Born in Naples in 1634, Luca Giordano was the great protagonist of European art, as well as one of the most prolific painters of all time. Trained in the Neapolitan Caravaggism, at the workshop of José de Ribera, he made his debut by performing similar to those of the master but also subject to the influence of . While staying in Rome he came into contact with the environment of , while after a subsequent trip to Venice, from 1667, the artist made his own some characteristics of the painting of Titian and Veronese.

His style was characterized by grandiloquence, delicacy and above all a speed that allowed him to perform an incredible quantity of works with his workshop. https://www.anticswiss.com/en/fine-art-antiques/antichita-castelbarco-25391
