The guides are organized by the four New York City Community Boards in which our portfolio properties are located (Brooklyn 3, 5, 8 and 16). We would like to thank LISC Cashin Fellow Keren Abreu, New York City College of Technology Intern Lakeisha Fable and LISC Cashin Fellow Noelle Nelson for their diligent and detailed work in designing these guides and compiling the information by community board and zip code. Background Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation (NEBHDCo) was incorporated in January 1985 as a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. NEBHDCo’s mission is the preservation, development and management of affordable housing and homeownership opportunities; community and economic development initiatives and human services that effect social change in central Brooklyn. NEBHDCo provides services in four program areas: Affordable Housing, Property Management, Asset Management and Community Programs. Our mission is supported by the vision to rebuild sustainable communities through long-term community based assets. Brooklyn neighborhoods served include: Bedford-Stuyvesant (Community Board 3), Crown Heights (Community Board 8), East New York (Community Board 5), and Ocean Hill-Brownsville (Community Board 16). To date NEBHDCo has planned, joint-ventured, and developed 2093 housing units of which 1082 are owned by the organization, with nearly 17,000 square feet of commercial space throughout the central Brooklyn neighborhood. Our Community Programs Department works across four areas: Tenant Supports, Healthy Food and Living, Youth Supports and Social Activities. Programming includes: Tenant Supports: Employment and other referral resources; public benefits supports; tenant meetings; winter coat drive; FTAP (Formal Trespass Affidavit Program) Healthy Food and Living: Golden Harvest food pantry; cooking and nutrition workshops; community gardens and workshops; support for local healthy food businesses Youth Supports: Youth aged out of foster care housing and supports; Finding Your Future educational scholarship; Hobby Quest crafts events; Back to School events; holiday toy drive Social Activities: Family and senior trips; Thanksgiving community meal; volunteer appreciation events For more information, contact us at the main office at 718-453-9490 3 4 BROOKLYN COMMUNITY BOARD #16 General Information For more information on CB16, visit http://www.brooklyncb16.org/, call (718) 385-0323, or contact the CB16 main office at 444 Thomas S. Boyland Street Brooklyn, NY 11212 Community District #16, which includes the neighborhoods of Brownsville and Ocean Hill, is located in East Brooklyn. It is comprised of 1,230.6 acres of land and is bounded on the north by Broadway, on the east of Van Sinderen Avenue, on the south by the Long Island Railroad, and on the west by East 98th street, East New York Avenue, Ralph Avenue, Atlantic Avenue and Saratoga Avenue. According to the 2010 census, Ocean Hill-Brownsville is home to 90,235 people, a majority of whom are African-Americans, Caribbean-Americans, and Latinos. Population is on the increase as new housing units are developed. Notable personalities from Brownsville include Al Sharpton, Willie Randolph, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Aaron Copland, M.O.P., Andrew Dice Clay, Danny Kaye, The RZA and Tony Cai. The Pitkin Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) is the leading commercial corridor for Brownsville. It covers 10 blocks between Howard Avenue and Mother Gaston Blvd extending along Rockaway Blvd between Glenmore and Belmont Avenues. The BID supports merchants and owners, delivering sanitation, security, and beautification programs aimed at improving quality of life for the entire community. On other commercial strips, including East 98th Street, Broadway, Fulton Street, Saratoga Avenue, Rockaway Avenue, Belmont Avenue, Livonia Avenue, and Mother Gaston Boulevard, you will find personal service shops, small retail clothing, appliance and furniture stores, eateries, supermarkets and bodegas. Since the 1960’s Brownsville has been a neighborhood of great poverty and need. In recent years, however, local community leaders and residents have garnered the support of an array of partners and resources to begin rebuilding the physical and social structure of the community for its residents. As one prominent example, the historic 157,000 square foot Loew's Pitkin Theater, closed and crumbling for over 40 years, reopened in the fall of 2012 as the Brownsville Ascend Charter School. An expansion of new housing and commercial developments is also underway and local residents are working with local precincts and officials to combat crime and improve public safety. Although much more work is needed, these are hopeful signs of improvement and recovery for the community. We hope that this guide will serve as a useful way for residents to find resources within their neighborhood - to fully access these opportunities, to know who to contact, and where to find more information. 5 Community Board #16 Committees For more information regarding CB3 committees, visit http://www.brooklyncb16.org/ or call (718) 385-0323 Economic Development Parks and Recreation Chairperson: Ms. Genese Morgan Chairperson: Mr. Kofi Hormeku Meetings: Contact Board office for Meetings: Contact Board office for information information Environmental and Sanitation Public Safety Chairperson: Rev.
