The eternal GranTurismo The iconic Maserati GranTurismo receives a substantial refresh for 2018. Highlights include:

• Enhancements to the classic design • More aerodynamic exterior styling • Two versions: Sport & MC • Intuitive new driver interface & infotainment system • Built in Modena

The Pininfarina-designed GranTurismo is a historically important, brand-defining model for Maserati.

The luxurious four-seater sports coupé was conceived as an ultra-modern interpretation of our very first production , the elegant 1500 of 1947. And over the years, the GranTurismo has evolved into one of the most iconic Maserati ever built, thanks to its uncompromised GT character.

This character is perfectly expressed by a uniquely compelling combination – bold yet elegant design; the exhilarating, inspirational performance of a naturally aspirated, Maranello-built ; and hand-crafted comfort offered by four individual, ® seats.

In essence, the GranTurismo is the ultimate expression of what grand touring means to Maserati.

The GranTurismo, together with its GranCabrio sibling, is assembled at the historic Maserati plant of Ciro Menotti in Modena, following the highest manufacturing and quality control standards in the world. More than 37,000 GranTurismo and GranCabrio models have been sold globally since 2007.

MY18 range, restyling and driver interface The GranTurismo range has been streamlined for 2018 and two well-defined versions will be offered – Sport and MC. The 4.2-litre GranTurismo has been

discontinued, while the Sport and MC share the same powertrain and interior personalization packages.

The MC – for Maserati Corse – takes on an important ambassadorial role for the entire Maserati range, representing the company’s long and illustrious racing heritage. Replacing the previous MC Stradale, it offers a wide array of features already proven in other Maserati models. They include the five selectable operating modes.

The naturally aspirated V8 unit is hand-assembled by in Maranello and weighs only 175kg. The 4.7-litre engine features a wet sump and – exclusive to Maserati – a cross-plane crankshaft. This provides unrivalled throttle response, free-revving characteristics and a thrilling Maserati signature sound.

When it came to the MY18 restyle, the timeless Pininfarina design was treated with the utmost respect by the Maserati Design Centre. The results, among others, are even better aerodynamic efficiency and compliance with the latest pedestrian safety regulations.

The new front and rear bumpers of the MY18 GranTurismo elegantly refine the visual impact of the striking original styling. The Sport and MC share the same basic features, although each has unique inserts to accentuate its distinctive character. Additionally, the headlights for each model are slightly restyled for 2018, while a new rear parking camera is now integrated.

The front bumper features a larger, hexagonal grille with a ‘shark nose’ profile and a chrome insert all around. The new nose is inspired by the sensational Alfieri Concept and adds a three-dimensional effect to the front view. This design also helps optimize airflow distribution and reduce aerodynamic drag.

The bumper’s lateral air ducts, introduced in the MC Stradale and adopted across the GranTurismo range in 2012, are redesigned for 2018. By visually pushing the car’s weight towards the front wheels, they convey a heightened sense of dynamic stability, while also contributing to improved aerodynamic efficiency.

in brief overview

The central splitter is the element that most clearly distinguishes the two models and the GranTurismo MC boasts an even more pronounced design, giving greater emphasis to the motor racing pedigree. The new front bumper and redesigned air splitter, meanwhile, reduce dynamic drag from 0.33 to 0.32.

The track-focused GranTurismo MC is equipped with a carbon-fibre bonnet in the body colour as standard. The bonnet also features downforce-optimizing air- vents. Additionally, there are iconic vertical air vents in the front wings, deep functional side skirts, titanium calipers (black in Sport) and 20” Trofeo Silver forged wheels, now 10% stronger and lighter. A pronounced rear lip spoiler is another dynamic highlight.

The headlights for 2018 maintain the same profile and LED/Bi-Xenon functionality, but feature discreet, internal restyling. This includes reshaped LED Daytime Running Lights, grooved housing in the Xenon lamp areas and the Maserati inscription in low relief. Additionally, the MC version’s headlights feature a darker finish.

While the sleek body of the GranTurismo remains untouched, the rear bumper has been redesigned with the sole aim of emphasizing the natural elegance of this iconic GT. With its neater, more cohesive design, the new bumper further accentuates the impression of stability, while adding a graceful finishing touch to the car’s unmistakable silhouette.

The central diffuser is specific to each version. The emphasis is on elegance with the GranTurismo Sport, with the oval exhaust outlets appearing at the bumper’s edges. The GranTurismo MC is decisively sportier, with round outlets coming through the central, transparent diffuser. The exhaust system of the MC version is lighter and has a totally different shape and function. When in Sport mode, a valve channels exhaust gases so they completely bypass the silencer. This reduces back pressure and creates a breathtakingly sporty sound.

The exterior of the MY18 GranTurismo is available in 16 colours. A brand new three-layer colour is introduced (Blu Assoluto), while four more three-layer colours are now available on the entire range. There is a range of 14 light alloy

wheels in six designs, one of which is in forged aluminium, and an exterior carbon package is offered both for Sport and MC versions.

The MY18 GranTurismo is fitted with new, lightweight, fourth-generation P Zero™ tyres. These contribute to a reduction in unsprung weight plus better suspension performance and tyre grip. The new P Zero™ is designed to improve braking distances in dry and wet conditions, respectively by 4% and 5%, while improving mileage by at least 30%.

The elegant interior of the GranTurismo offers unparalleled comfort thanks to its four individual Poltrona Frau® leather seats with integrated headrests. For 2018, the dashboard features a more sculptured design in the passenger area, complemented in high-fashion style by stitched leather finishes.

The centrepiece of the dashboard is now a high-resolution, 8.4” capacitive touchscreen from the state-of-the art infotainment system. The GranTurismo system is in line with those featured in the other Maserati models and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions.

Both GranTurismo models also now feature the high-end Harman Kardon Premium Sound system as standard.

The climate and seat heating control are not integrated into the touchscreen function, although the central console area is still significantly neater, with fewer buttons than before. The lower console is redesigned to accommodate a user- friendly, double rotary dial – a standard feature on all Maserati models. Positioned next to the gear lever, this a high-quality component in forged aluminium. The driving modes button cluster is now in front of the gear lever.

Another interior refinement is a new Maserati clock with a double dial in a slightly more prominent position at the centre of the dashboard.

For 2018, there are eight interior colours and five interior trim options – from Carbon Fibre to Black Piano and Walnut Briarwood. All are available on Sport and MC versions.

Timeless Italian design When restyling the GranTurismo for 2018, Maserati approached the original Pininfarina design with the greatest respect. As a result, the changes are barely noticeable but still substantial and the car is aerodynamically even more efficient.

“Even if we have created different cars ever since, GranTurismo still represents Maserati better than any other model. It remains the Maserati flagship for its elegance, for its sporty character, for everything.”

Marco Tencone, Head of Maserati Design

Over the years, GranTurismo has evolved to become one of the world’s most iconic sports cars. It is also, of course, a Maserati design classic – a resolutely sporty luxury coupé with a uniquely timeless elegance.

According to Marco Tencone, Head of Maserati Design, there is good reason for this: “GranTurismo was originally considered a courageous design, even for Pininfarina standards. This helped it remain contemporary throughout the years. In fact, the boldness of the initial design was adopted by other luxury brands in the following years. As a result, the car still looks fresh today – it is a timeless design”.

The long front, muscular rear and defined lines suggest forceful forward movement – even at a standstill.

“The proportions of the car, the length of the bonnet in relation to the volume of the cabin, is considered unique to this day. There is nothing like it,” says Giovanni Ribotta, the Maserati Head of Exterior Design who lead the small team responsible for restyling the GranTurismo.

The nose of the GranTurismo, inspired by the Maserati A6 GCS of 1954, was designed to improve both aerodynamics and front brake cooling. The most

recognizable exterior design feature, it has been elegantly restyled for 2018. The prominent oval grille of the previous model is replaced by a larger, hexagonal ‘shark nose’ with a discreet chrome insert. The characteristics of new grille are clearly inspired by the Alfieri Concept and add a three-dimensional effect to the front profile. They also help improve airflow distribution and significantly reduce aerodynamic drag. Additionally, the concave, vertical grille bars are restyled and resemble those seen on the Levante.

The lateral air ducts of the bumper, introduced in the MC Stradale and adopted by the entire GranTurismo range in 2012, are redesigned for 2018. They convey a sense of stability by visually pushing the weight of the car’s nose towards the front wheels and help to optimize aerodynamic flow.

The central splitter is the element that most clearly distinguishes the two versions: the GranTurismo MC boasts a pronounced lip design that more emphatically emphasizes the sporting pedigree. The new front bumper and redesigned air splitter have led to a reduction in aerodynamic drag by no less than 10%, thanks to better flow distribution between the upper and lower sides of the car. The resulting Cd is 0.32, compared with 0.33 of the previous model.

The improved drag coefficient also pays off when it comes to maximum speed, which is slightly over 300 km/h for the MC. Another benefit of the aerodynamic optimization is a reduction in lift. This delivers excellent results in terms of high- speed stability. The front grille conveyor has also been enhanced, providing the necessary airflow to the cooling system, while reducing drag.

The headlights of the MY18 GranTurismo have the same profile and LED/Bi- Xenon functionality as before but went through a discreet, internal restyling that includes reshaped LED Daytime Running Lights, grooved housing in the Xenon headlamp areas and the Maserati inscription in low relief. To the rear, the high- tech triangular rear light clusters with 96 LEDs are carried over from previous model year.

in detail exterior design

The Xenon clusters within the headlights incorporate Adaptive Light Control, which follows the movement of the steering wheel by up to 15 degrees. The headlights of the MC, meanwhile, feature a darker finish.

The proportions of the GranTurismo are inspired by the historic Tipo 60/62 Maserati Birdcage and the Birdcage prototype of 2004. With its lean yet powerful side profile, featuring muscular front and rear wheel-arches, the car still looks refreshingly modern today.

This is why, essentially, it was not touched in the MY18 restyle. Key historic styling cues such as the triple air vent apertures in the front wings and the trademark, triangular C-pillar which houses the iconic Saetta badge make the GranTurismo silhouette instantly recognizable and ever desirable.

The classic side lines seamlessly connect the historically inspired front with the contemporary rear profile, which has undergone a barely perceptible restyle for 2018. The Turin Style Centre designers had one clear focus – to further refine the inimitable elegance of the iconic GT. With a neater, more curvaceous and more cohesive design, the rear bumper further accentuates the sense of stability, masterfully rounding off the car’s silhouette.

The central rear diffuser is specific to each version. The accent is on elegance with the GranTurismo Sport, with the oval exhaust outlets sited at the bumper’s edges. It’s decisively sportier on the GranTurismo MC, where the dynamically focused, round tailpipes emerge from within the transparent diffuser itself.

The GranTurismo Sport is fitted with 20” Astro design silver wheels, black brake calipers and chrome line window mouldings.

Visually, the GranTurismo MC keeps the more dynamic look of the outgoing MC Stradale. It sports the 20” Trofeo design silver forged wheels, titanium brake calipers, functional air vents on the front wings, black line window mouldings, MC side skirts and the carbon fibre bonnet in body colour with functional air vents for improved high-speed downforce. While the bonnet contributes to better stability and improves cooling, it also means that the four-seat MC continues to be the fastest and lightest car in the Maserati GranTurismo range.

New driver interface & infotainment system For 2018, the sumptuous, hand-crafted interior of the GrandTurismo features more dynamic design, improved ergonomics and a new, state-of- the art infotainment system.

• New infotainment with 8.4” high-resolution capacitive touchscreen • Redesigned central console with double rotary control • Compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto • New double dial Maserati clock • Standard Harman Kardon Premium Sound system

The elegant interior of the GranTurismo offers unparalleled comfort, thanks largely to its four Poltrona Frau® leather seats with integrated headrests. It harmoniously blends luxury and space with large-capacity performance, highlighting its authentic GT character without sacrificing day-to-day usability. GranTurismo is indeed a rarity in its class, given its ability to accommodate four adults in absolute comfort, and each in an individual seat.

The leather wrapped interior has been redesigned, echoing Maserati design traits by using the finest real materials, while subtle chrome rings around the buttons and stitched Trident logos on the headrests aptly illustrate the exceptional care given to each and every detail.

The 2018 model follows a new architectural philosophy, according to Maserati Head of Interior Design, Gianni Colonello: “We took the chance to redesign the interiors combining the craftsmanship appearance for the new instrument panel volumes with the updated infotainment elements. With the adoption of this approach the dashboard is now more clearly focused than before, comprising two, perfectly arranged areas: digital and physical.”

Taking its lead from the exterior design, the dashboard overall has a more sculpted design, especially on the passenger side, which is emphasized by stitched leather surfaces in pure haute couture fashion. All ‘tension’ points in the interior feature double stitching, while the cut lines are single-stitched. According

to the interior designers, this is a purely Italian approach more commonly found in the high-fashion furniture and accessories industries than the automotive world.

8.4” touchscreen and rotary dial The centrepiece of the dashboard is now a high-resolution, 8.4” capacitive touchscreen. The integration of this high-tech innovation in the physical environment of the dashboard follows an architectural rather than a decorative approach. Indeed, all dashboard elements are properly presented and celebrated with technical forms.

The state-of-the art infotainment system of the GranTurismo is the latest one adopted by the entire Maserati range. The 800x600-pixel display offers drag and drop functionality and features a 3D perspective effect in a greenish ambient light. This is an ideal match with the backlight colour of the instrument cluster and that of the courtesy lights.

The system is 100% compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions. The central console area is considerably more focused, with a tidier appearance and significantly fewer buttons than before.

The lower console is redesigned to accommodate the double rotary dial that was previously introduced on Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli models. It is a high- quality component in forged aluminium and each is precisely machined one at a time.

The rotary dial is sited next to the gear lever and offers intuitive control of the audio volume and basic infotainment system functions. The cluster of buttons for the different driving modes is now in front of the gearshift lever.

The GranTurismo interior features 12V power socket, USB charging port, SD memory slot and AUX socket at the front armrest, two USB ports at the rear end of the central console and two more USB ports in the glovebox.

The interior refinement of the MY18 GranTurismo includes a new Maserati clock in a more prominent position and with a twin dial in blue at the centre of the dashboard.

Both MY18 GranTurismo models feature a Harman Kardon Premium Sound system as standard, providing outstanding power and sound quality. It consists of 10 speakers, a 10-channel, 750W amplifier and a high-performance subwoofer.

The GranTurismo interior has standard, power-adjustable front seats in Poltrona Frau® leather upholstery and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The body-hugging front and rear seats with integrated headrests offer optimal support and comfort for the driver and passengers on even the longest journeys and deliver sporting benefits without compromising on luxury.

The GranTurismo MC radiates athletic character in its entirety and in every small detail. The front Sport seats, for example, feature lightweight yet exceptionally strong carbon fibre backs as an option. They also provide all the luxury expected from Maserati thanks to a combination of Poltrona Frau® leather and Alcantara trim. The standard trims are soft black. Alternatively, the seats can be clad in perforated Alcantara leather for a stylish yet practical finish. The Trident logo is embossed on the headrests.

Continuing the sleek and sporty theme of the MC, the gearshift paddles are perfectly matched to the drilled, aluminium alloy foot pedals.

Personalization programme Maserati offers a personalization programme unlike any other in the world, allowing each customer to create a unique GranTurismo, according to precise individual wishes and tastes.

For 2018, there are eight interior colours available and five interior trims – from Carbon Fibre to Black Piano and Walnut Briarwood. These options are available on both Sport and MC versions.

There are also three optional interior Anniversary Edition packages. They include Poltrona Frau® leather upholstery in three different colours (Bianco Pregiato with strip design, Nero and Black leather/Alcantara®) combined with the dashboard, central console and armrests in stitched leather and the Trident logo stitched into the headrests.

Another option for both versions is the Centennial Pack. This includes Poltrona Frau® leather upholstery with a strip design on seats and armrests in four colour combinations:

• Black/Rosso Corallo • Bianco Pregiato/Blu Santorini • Black/Blu Santorini • Black/Bianco Pregiato

The pack includes the Trident logo stitched into the headrests in the same colour as the strip design, the central dashboard and console in leather with contrast stitching and seat frames and backrest covers in carbon fibre.

Poltrona Frau® leather The acclaimed furniture manufacturer Poltrona Frau® has been providing Maserati with the finest quality leathers since 2001. Both Italian companies share a passion for craftsmanship, quality, style and usability. And while Poltrona Frau® is the supplier for various car companies, only two companies receive the finest, most exclusive Frau® leather: Maserati and Ferrari.

Poltrona Frau® examines and selects each hide by hand, and 20 tanning and treatment processes ensure that the exclusive Frau® leather remains completely organic and beautifully soft – yet also very durable. Over time, Poltrona Frau® leather takes on a unique patina and does not tear like ordinary leather.

in detail engine

Naturally aspirated V8 from Maranello The naturally aspirated, Ferrari-built V8 engine in the GranTurismo – true to its red-blooded racing pedigree – provides sharp throttle response, free- revving character and a unique, soul-stirring Maserati soundtrack.

• One of the last naturally aspirated V8 engines • 460hp at 7,000rpm • Wet sump and cross-plane crankshaft

The state-of-the art 4.7-litre powerhouse in the GranTurismo is one of the last naturally aspirated V8 engines in the segment today. Based on the F136 family of 90º V8 petrol engines, it was developed jointly by Ferrari and Maserati and produced by Ferrari in Maranello.

What makes the GranTurismo engine unique, and what gives it that famous Maserati sound, is the exclusive use of a cross-plane crankshaft, instead of the flat-plane version used in Ferrari supercars.

This, along with other clever design features and advanced electronics, also creates an engine character that combines the best of two worlds – high-rev output (up to 7,200rpm) and strong torque at low revs. And when it comes to throttle response, the Maserati V8 is incredibly sharp – it almost feels directly connected to the driver’s right foot.

It all adds up to a thrillingly dynamic driving experience in the GranTurismo. That and the ability to cover long distances with seemingly limitless, endlessly obliging power always on tap.

The Maranello-built engine guarantees the highest standards of reliability and durability. This was proved in exhaustive, 100-hour-long tests with the engine running successfully at highest rpm.

The 4,691cc V8 of the GranTurismo produces 460hp at 7,000rpm and 520Nm of peak torque at 4,750rpm. In a 90º format, the engine is also fully balanced and uses five main bearings and a wet sump. Its lightweight construction (175kg) and

compact size have been achieved thanks to the crankcase and cylinder heads in hardened aluminium alloy.

The cross-plane crankshaft – which is responsible for the throaty Maserati signature sound – is made in hardened and tempered steel, ideal for ultra-high thermal and mechanical loads. The engine’s 32 valves are operated by chain- driven, double overhead camshafts.

Racing has always been in the Maserati DNA. For the GranTurismo, this is directly manifested in the use of Formula 1-derived special coatings for components subject to high stresses in the V8. These reduce friction for increased power, lower fuel consumption and improve reliability. Nikasil-coated steel cylinder liners are extremely tough and wear-resistant; Diamond Like Coating (DLC) and super- finished camshafts originally developed for motor sport are also used.

The engine mapping optimizes ignition timing and thus readies the engine for variable valve timing even at high rpm. Specially strengthened pistons boost overall power output.

The oval-finished exhaust tailpipes of the GranTurismo generate the sonorous Maserati sound. This, however, can be further accentuated by switching on the Sport button. In Sport-Manual mode, exhaust gases are diverted on a shorter route to the tailpipes, generating an even richer, more intense soundtrack.

The MC features smaller, lighter rear silencers, repositioned higher and towards the centre of the car, just as they are in the GT4 racers. The exhaust shape, together with the positioning of its valve, which bypasses the silencer completely in Sport mode, mean there is lower back pressure compared with that of the GranTurismo Sport. This gives the engine a deep, throaty roar not unlike that of a thoroughbred race car.

With the six-speed ZF Automatic gearbox, the GranTurismo Sport accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 299km/h. Its combined fuel consumption is 14.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions are 331g/km. Acceleration and top speed values for the lighter MC version are, respectively, 4.7 seconds and 301km/h.

in detail transmission

Six-speed ZF Automatic Gearbox Attached directly to the rear of the engine, the MC Auto Shift gearbox is a perfect match to the character of the GranTurismo, delivering comfortable to extremely sporty gearshifts through its five operating modes.

• Five operating modes • Gearshifts as fast as 100 milliseconds

The six-speed ZF Automatic gearbox (MC Auto Shift) has been conceived to match the extra performance of the V8 powerhouse. Engine power is fed to the rear wheels via an asymmetric limited slip differential – 25% in traction and 45% in release – with a final ratio of 3.54.

It can be operated in Auto-Normal, Auto-Sport, Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport and ICE modes. In the Manual modes, gearshifts are directly controlled via the steering column-mounted gearshift paddles and the car operates as a true manual, holding each gear until it receives driver input. In Manual-Normal, the driver can shift through to the red line, while, in Manual-Sport, the transmission will hold the gear until the driver initiates the change, even if that means the engine hits its rev limiter.

In Sport mode, the super-fast MC Auto Shift mode is also activated. This is capable of making gearshifts in just 100 milliseconds. This mode includes automatic blipping on the downshift, along with a Launch Control system, called the MC Start Strategy, which functions with the Maserati Stability Program (MSP) turned off.

With the MC Start Strategy, the driver presses and holds down the brake pedal, simultaneously presses the accelerator until the engine reaches optimum launch rpm of between 2,300-2,500rpm and then releases the brake pedal. Using this fast-start system, recommended exclusively for racetrack use, the GranTurismo Sport hits 100km/h from a standing start in 4.8 seconds and the MC in 4.7 seconds.

Great comfort, high-level grip The GranTurismo has all-round ability found in few sports coupés thanks to superb ride comfort, extreme grip and sporty handling.

• Ideal weight distribution • Double wishbone suspension • Sport Skyhook shock absorbers on Sport version • Hydraulic steering

The GranTurismo is engineered to provide great ride comfort for all on board, while also providing the most precise responsiveness in sporty driving.

The foundation of the GranTurismo models’ character on road is optimal weight distribution (49:51 front-rear), with the MC Auto shift gearbox attached directly to the rear of the mid-front-positioned engine.

Additionally, double wishbone suspension for all four wheels guarantees precisely guided wheel-travel, while strengthened anti-roll bars suppress any unwanted body-movement.

The GranTurismo Sport also uses the Sport Skyhook system. This is the latest evolution of the continuous damping control function from Maserati and makes the car even more reactive and enjoyable to drive, while increasing passenger comfort. The Sport Skyhook system constantly adapts the damping characteristics to suit the road surface. Combined with a thickened rear stabilizer bar, the electronically controlled damping system increases the vertical stiffness of the GranTurismo Sport by 10% in Sport mode.

Normal mode prioritizes comfort in daily use while maintaining an appropriate degree of sportiness, in true Maserati style. Conversely, Sport mode offers a very dynamic set-up without compromising comfort.

As for steering, the hydraulic system used in the GranTurismo inspires with its instant feedback and a direct connection between the road and the driver’s fingertips that no electro-mechanical steering is capable of.

This overall handling prowess is matched by formidable stopping power. This is only to be expected of the company that pioneered dual-cast braking technology with its acclaimed supplier .

The GranTurismo continues the use of the Brembo dual-cast system, with cast- iron discs attached to aluminium hats that reduce unsprung weight by at least 15%. Cross-drilled and grooved, 360x32 mm brake discs at the front and 330x28 mm discs at the rare are combined with six-piston front brake calipers and four-piston rear calipers.

The GranTurismo MC has been developed to be comfortable, progressive, balanced and entertaining for all types of driver demands. The suspension and chassis layout, for instance, enhances the already-impressive track performance without compromising on the car’s abilities as a day-to-day luxury coupé.

The GranTurismo MC features Trofeo Design 20” forged aluminium wheels that are 10% lighter than standard alloys. The result is lower angular momentum, inertia and unsprung weight. On the road, this results in improved tyre grip and increased performance, especially at high speeds.

Pirelli has developed fourth-generation P Zero tyres especially for the GranTurismo for better performance in terms of handling, braking and acceleration, both in dry and wet conditions. The tyres are significantly lighter, contributing to a further reduction in unsprung weight and improved suspension performance.

According to Pirelli tests, the new P Zero tyres improve braking distance and acceleration by 4% on dry and by 5% on wet tarmac. And along with improved grip, they provide better agility, traction and feel when aquaplaning. The new are also designed to offer better mileage by at least 30%.

Built in 322 Viale Ciro Menotti, Modena The GranTurismo is assembled in the historic Maserati plant of Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena, following the highest manufacturing and quality control standards anywhere in the world.

Maserati officially moved from Bologna to Modena on 1 September 1939, two years after the Orsi family acquired the company from the Maserati brothers. Since then, the company’s headquarters have been at No 322, Viale Ciro Menotti.

The first road car produced in the historic Modena address was the extraordinary A6 1500 in 1947. This was based on a Pininfarina body, exactly like that of the GranTurismo.

All Maserati cars were assembled in the red brick factory through to 2013. At that point, production of the current Quattroporte and the new Ghibli shifted to the state-of-the-art Giovanni Agnelli plant in Grugliasco. In 2016, Maserati inaugurated its third production line for the Levante, in the historic Mirafiori plant of Turin.

The production lines of the GranTurismo/GranCabrio model are still housed in the historic building complex of Viale Ciro Menotti, covering a total area of about 50,000 square metres, closely protected by City of Modena heritage status.

From the outside, the building looks the same but, inside, it has been completely updated. The car inspection centre and the testing ground are in the nearby area.

The Maserati plant consists of an assembly rather than an actual production line. Chassis are manufactured by an external supplier in Grugliasco and, before arriving at Modena, go to Maranello where they are painted. As for the V8 engines, these are also produced in Maranello and then tested in Modena.

There are three ‘accessory’ lines in the Modena plant. One is for the powertrain (engine, exhaust, transmission, suspension). The second is for the dashboard.

And the third is for the doors. These three groups have the parts pre-assembled before installing them in the cars.

The thoroughly modernized facility employs the best of both skilled labour and advanced technology to achieve a superior hand-built vehicle. Utilizing proven practices developed through the company’s World Class Manufacturing System (WCMS), the plant has a strong culture dedicated to producing some of the highest quality cars in the world.

Every GranTurismo and GranCabrio is built to order – a document accompanies each car to every station at the facility and is signed to ensure it is built to the customer’s exact personal requirements. According to the factory’s official data, there have been about 18,000 different GranTurismo/GranCabrio configurations so far.

There are various quality control stations along the assembly line, plus a final control procedure. Following the assembly line, there is a testing station where each car undergoes a series of suspension, NVH, electronics and water-proofing examinations.

A road test follows – a standard procedure for every Maserati. The test includes a preselected route of 40-45 kilometres around Modena, after which the tester completes a checklist noting all relevant observations to ensure a perfect final product.

After its return to the factory, the car is cleaned, polished, fitted with a first-aid kit and a tyre kit before it is taken to the Pre Delivery Inspection, which is undertaken by an external supplier.
