6. FRESHWATER FLORA AND FAUNA: SPECIES DIVERSITY, COMMUNITY STRUCTURE AND ECOLOGY 6.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides an in-depth focus on patterns of freshwater biodiversity in Maine (for an overview of aquatic taxa and ecosystems, see Chapter 3). The level of detail with which each taxonomic group is addressed reflects the amount of information available to MABP. Some groups, such as fish, odonates and mussels have been well-surveyed in Maine (Chapter 5) and the resulting data have resulted in a rich series of information analyses. Conversely, survey effort for other groups has been either patchy (e.g. caddisflies) or very limited (e.g. freshwater snails). In these cases, it is clear that there is much that we do not know about patterns of aquatic biodiversity in Maine – indeed it is likely that current species lists are significantly incomplete. Many of the findings presented here result from MABP-derived analyses using the composite MABP database; other information has been gleaned from various literature sources. 6.2 VASCULAR PLANTS Defining a list of “aquatic” plant species is problematic, particularly in the case of emergent plants. Species that grow entirely or largely below the water surface (e.g. many of the pondweeds [Potamogeton spp.], or the hornworts [Ceratophyllum spp.]) or float on the water surface (water lilies, duckweeds) are clearly obligate aquatic taxa. However, many emergent species straddle the often diffuse boundary between lakes (and streams) and palustrine wetlands. Others inhabit lake or river shores, where the habitat which may change over time from shallow water to being fully exposed. For the purposes of MABP, the decision to label a species as aquatic was based on habitat descriptions presented in Haines and Vining (1998) and Magee and Ahles (1999), supplemented by information provided by D. -

We discuss the current law and set out a number of provisional proposals and options for reform on which we invite consultees’ views. Geographical scope: The Consultation Paper applies to the law of England and Wales. Impact assessment: In Chapter 9 of this Consultation Paper, consultees are asked also to comment on the likely costs and benefits of any changes provisionally proposed. Creag Meagaidh is a complex massif, with numerous mountain tops and an extensive high summit plateau edged by a dramatic series of ice-carved corries and gullies. The Reserve extends from the highest of the mountain tops to the shores of Loch Laggan. The plateau is carpeted in moss-heath and is an important breeding ground for dotterel. The corries support unusual artic- alpine plants and the lower slopes have scattered patches of ancient woodland dominated by birch. Located 45 kilometres (km) northeast of Fort William and covering nearly 4,000 hectares (ha), the Reserve is owned and managed by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Creag Meagaidh has been a NNR since 1986 and during the last twenty years SNH has worked to restore natural habitats, particularly woodland, on the Reserve. Like much of the Highlands, the vegetation has been heavily grazed for centuries, so it was decided to reduce the number of grazing animals by removing sheep and culling red deer. The aim was not to eliminate grazing animals altogether, but to keep numbers at a level that allowed the habitats, especially the woodland, to recover. -

Populations of Morocco South-western part traditionally use the fruits of Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels to prepare an edible oil whose obtention also furnishes, as side product, a cake used to feed the cattle and complements the forage furnished by the leaves of this same plant. Unfortunately, the wood of Argania spinosa is also used for fuel and deforestation is subsequently accelerated since populations are generally eager to replace argan groves by cultures of higher and immediate benefit. However, argan tree, that is particularly well adapted to grow in arid lands, has been proposed by several agencies to slow down the desert progress in northern Africa. In order to incite the South-western Morocco dwellers to reintroduce argan trees, a program aimed to increase the industrial value of Argania spinosa, and beginning by its phytochemical study, is currently carried out in Morocco. The results of these recent studies together with previous knowledge are summarised in this review. KEYWORDS. Skeels), of the family sapotaceae, is endemic in South- western Morocco where it grows over about 320,000 square miles. For centuries, this slow growing and spiny tree, that may be either shrubby or up to seven or ten meters has played an essential ecological function in this part of Morocco. Indeed, it effectively protects the soil against heavy rain or wind-induced erosion and, furthermore, by shading all kind of cultures, maintains soil fertility. -

Arrival and diversification of mabuyine skinks (Squamata: Scincidae) in the Neotropics based on a fossil-calibrated timetree Anieli Guirro Pereira and Carlos G. Schrago Department of Genetics, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil ABSTRACT Background. The evolution of South American Mabuyinae skinks holds significant biogeographic interest because its sister lineage is distributed across the African continent and adjacent islands. Moreover, at least one insular species, Trachylepis atlantica, has independently reached the New World through transoceanic dispersal. To clarify the evolutionary history of both Neotropical lineages, this study aimed to infer an updated timescale using the largest species and gene sampling dataset ever assembled for this group. By extending the analysis to the Scincidae family, we could employ fossil information to estimate mabuyinae divergence times and carried out a formal statistical biogeography analysis. To unveil macroevolutionary patterns, we also inferred diversification rates for this lineage and evaluated whether the colonization of South American continent significantly altered the mode of Mabuyinae evolution. Methods. A time-calibrated phylogeny was inferred under the Bayesian framework employing fossil information. This timetree was used to (i) evaluate the historical biogeography of mabuiyines using the statistical approach implemented in Bio- GeoBEARS; (ii) estimate macroevolutionary diversification rates of the South American Mabuyinae lineages and the patterns of evolution of selected traits, namely, the mode of reproduction, body mass and snout–vent length; (iii) test the hypothesis of differential macroevolutionary patterns in South American lineages in BAMM and GeoSSE; and Submitted 21 November 2016 (iv) re-evaluate the ancestral state of the mode of reproduction of mabuyines.
