St Andrew’s College

Dear All

We have enjoyed a very successful week of College sport. Last Friday we hosted the touring Paul Roos Gymnasium cricketers at 1st, 2nd, U16A, U15A and U14A level in 40 over games on our fields. Generally it was a very successful day and it was good to be able to play quality opposition from outside the province. The 1st XI played very well, taking early wickets and restricting them to 111 all out. A very good batting performance saw the score chased down with just 1 wicket falling.

On Saturday the cricketers continued their good form in their derby encounter with . The College teams were generally dominant and performed well. The 1st XI match, played in East London, produced its own form of tension as College navigated their way to a 3 wicket win after bowling Selborne out for 156. With wickets falling in clusters this result was always in the balance and College did well to press home the advantage and pass the score with 7 wickets down. On Tuesday afternoon the College 1st team played against on Lower in the final of the CSA T20 competition. After a good start by Graeme College they were restricted to 127 in their 20

12 Nec Aspera Terrent | Easter Term 2020 St Andrew’s College overs to which College replied in emphatic fashion, again just losing the 1 wicket and winning by 9 wickets. It is hoped that all our teams will step up and perform to the best of their abilities against Graeme College again this weekend.

On the back of a very successful outing for Nelson Mandela Aquatics at the recent interprovincial gala, Martin Wolmarans, Oliva Lange and Joss Hempel are taking part in the Stellenbosch leg of the SA Grand Prix circuit which attracts all the top swimmers in the country. Whilst they will be up against the best, I am sure that they will do themselves and the school proud. Oliva Lange, Martin Wolmarans, Joss Hempel

A number of our Water Polo teams played in the Grey High School Pre-season Tournament last weekend. Generally the results were good with most of the teams edging out their opponents and the 1st Team coming away with wins and one draw. Fixtures involved Grey High School, Paul Roos Gymnasium and Selborne College and served as a good marker for the season. The balance of the teams played fixtures against Graeme College and Kingswood College at home. This weekend sees College host the Annual SAC Shield Water Polo Tournament, with a good smattering of schools from outside of the province making their presence felt. We should be treated to an excellent weekend of Polo. Our 2nd and 3rd teams will be traveling through to this weekend, where they will play in the Pearson High School Festival, whilst the U15A side will play in the Grey High School U15 Festival.

On Monday afternoon the Senior and Junior Tennis teams took on Kingswood College. The senior team played as part of the annual Knowling Shield Tournament winning 4-1, whilst the juniors had good win based on the number of games won. This weekend a small 1st Team travel through to play in the Merrifield Tournament in East London and will hope to do well there.

The 1st and U16A Basketball teams travelled through to Port Elizabeth to play in the PE Comets Tournament last weekend, with the 1st Team winning their first game but under-performing on the day. The U16A team did very well to go unbeaten through the tournament and picking up the trophy in the process. This augurs very well for their season. The rest of the Club played derby fixtures against Queen’s College at home and had a very good day against the rapidly improving Queen’s College teams. This weekend we host perennial rivals, Grey High School, in a full set of fixtures. We look forward to what promises to be a testing outing.

Our U14 Rowers will travel down to the Swartkops River in Port Elizabeth where they will take part in the Grey High School U14 Regatta. This will be their first outing in a competition and we wish them well.

We have a group of golfers going through to play in a team competition at the Katberg Resort, set in the Katberg mountains north of Fort Beaufort, this weekend. This should be a lot of fun for those playing on a tight course with which they will not be familiar.

There certainly is a lot on go, as usual! I trust that you will all enjoy a great weekend wherever you may be.

Kind regards Pete Andrew Director of Sport
