People, especially the younger ones, were taught that the entire world was committed to achieving a goal of peaceful and harmonious coexistence. Most people even believed General Electric's slogan which boasted that "Progress is Our Most Important Product." Suddenly, in 1941, Americans were forced to re­ examine their sets of values which had been so firmly ingrained over the course of the previous two decades. What had become of peace and tranquility? And more importantly, what had happened to progress? Progress and technology, the two factors which had so greatly contributed to man's comfort, had suddenly turned against nim and caused almost intolerable agony. By the end of World War II Americans, as well as the entire world, had either felt or seen the full impact of what technology could do. Most of Europe had been destroyed or severely damaged, 76,000 people had been incinerated in the atomic holocaust which had taken place in Japan, and the scars of war had cut deeply into the main­ stream of America's way of life. The end of the second World War did not turn out to be the end of just another bad time in America's history. 11 It turned out to be the threshold of what may even be considered worse times. There was the Korean War of the early 50's, the "Beatnik" generation of the middle 50's, the Vietnam War which dominated most of the 60's, the "God is dead" movements, the drug, violence, riot and general escapism syndromes of the 60's and 70's. During this period of ·readjustmen~· in American history, many new novelists came into literary prominence, but none, perhaps, as important as Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut is important not only because·he, like many other novelists, was able to define man's discontent, but he was able to prescribe a remedy for it. Between 1952 and 1969, Vonnegut wrote six novels which represent him as being not only a master humorist and satirist, but also a dedicated artist. This thesis studies Vonnegut's growth as an artist. It is especially concerned with the changes that Vonnegut made in the way he structured novels so they could adequately reflect his slowly evolving vision. I would like to extend my appreciation to Douglas Mailen, who first told me to read Vonnegut, and Dr. John Somer, whose expertise in and love for Kurt Vonnegut motivated this study and whose much appreciated patience and many useful suggestions have helped in the writing of the text. "OLLY-OLLY-OX-IN-FREE" .........• • • 86 BIBLIOGRAPHY •....•..•..••.•• 93 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION HUMPTY DUMPTY OR THE FALL "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, All the King's horses and all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again" Children's nursery rhyme Joseph Frank has suggested in The Widening ~, that "If there is one theme that dominates the history of modern culture ••• , it is precisely that of insecurity, instability, the feeling of loss of control over the meaning and purpose of life amidst the continuing triumphs of science and technics."1 Perhaps those feelings of insecurity, instability and alienation had been most dramatically registered in many American soldiers who came home from the Second World War, questioning the concept of progress and the method of technology. Whether or not man can spiritually survive the instabilities of modern culture depends upon our artist's ability to create an aesthetic 1 Joseph Frank, The Widening ~I Crisis ~ Mastery in Modern Literature, p. 55. 2 that can order our experience of life. One soldier who returned to question America's future is the artist, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. When Vonnegut returned from the war, he had to resolve the problems of adjusting to a system that had drastically changed and of placing the war into perspective. Too much of an optimist to surrender, he was determined to restore the world he had lost. When Vonnegut arrived home, he was admitted to the University of Chicago to study anthropology, in which discipline he intended to study man. He was soon disillusioned with the scientific approach to the past and withdrew from the university. Convinced that man could not be studied objectively, under the influence of one of his professors, Dr. Redfield, he decided that man could be best understood in relation to folk societies, close knit groups of people who believed that behavior is personal not impersonal, that communicatien should be accomplished by word of mouth, that change should be minimal, and that what one man believes is what all men believe. Folk societies were groups wherein a man coUld feel a sense of personal worth. The attitudes and actions of one folk society, moreover tended to be reflected in all other folk societies. According to Vonnegut, " • • • there aren't any folk societies for us anymore."2 2 Kurt Vonnegut, "The Happiest Day in the Life of My 3 Because there are no folk societies today, and because World War II destroyed Vonnegut's world, he felt an artist's responsibility to create a new sensibility which could exist successfully in an impersonal and chaotic society. With the close of World War II, many artists confronted this problem. Writers like Heller, Kesey, Salinger, McCullers, and Sylvia Plath all had one thing in common I they successfully depicted man's discord with himself and his world. In spite of their diagnosis, however, they stopped short and failed to offer a remedy for the cracked spirit of man. No contemporary novelist has been as successful as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., in offering a concrete response. His unique vision not only dramatizes the transformation through which man has gone, but, more importantly, it shows him the way to go home, again. Vonnegut knew, that like man, the novel had reached a period in which it too was becoming dehumanized. The linear concept of time with its attendent implication of cause and effect that had structured the novel during the nineteenth century seemed inadequate as a structuring principle in a space age. In the nineteenth century, the American novel had maintained the English tradition that literature is a Father," address to the Wilbour Blashfield Foundation. This address was given on May 26, 1971, to the Ceremonial of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. 4 time-art. Joseph Frank believes that time is the natural unifying element for fiction. He also says that, when man feels comfortable in a world which he considers to be natural, he tends to create art which is naturalistic. Cause and effect tends to be the unifying element in naturalistic art. 3 Melville, Hawthorne, Emerson and even Mark Twain stand as classic examples of American novelists whose attempts to recreate life in terms of the cause-and­ effect tradition reflect the nineteenth-century notion that art does indeed mirror man and his ways. In the twentieth century, however, the novel needed a new flexibility to match the changes of an age which was moving and expanding so fast that man could no longer even begin to understand his world. Alvin Toffler, in Future Shock, believes that "culture shock" is an appropriate name for the syndrome into which many twentieth-century Americans have fallen. "Culture shock" is used to describe man's reaction to his vision of the world to which he still thinks he belongs. Toffler further believes that because of such rapid and haphazard change in contemporary values, "The culture shock phenomenon accounts for much of the bewilderment, frustration, and disorientation that plagues Americans in their dealings J Frank, p. 55. 5 with other societies."* Any person who is concerned with literature and believes that it exerts a positive force on society would probably agree that, if man is to rise from the quagmire of alienation, literature will have to assume an important role. Kurt Vonnegut was one such person. When asked, "why do you write," Vonnegut replied, "I think •• writers should be--and biologically have to be--agents of change. For the better, we hope."5 The change that Vonnegut envisions is a movement from the chaos of contemporary life to the ordered patterns of a folk society, from a sense of alienation to a sense of community.

What is most commonly referred to as Bluebeard, however, started as a Mother Goose tale transcribed by Charles Perrault in 1697. The story is about a man with a blue beard who had many wives and told them not to go into a certain room of his castle (Hermansson ix). Inevitably when each wife was given the golden key to the room and a chance alone in the house, she would always open the door and find the dead bodies of past wives. She would then meet her own death at the hands of her husband. According to Casie Hermansson, the tale was very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which spurred many literary figures to adapt it, including James Boswell, Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, and Thomas Carlyle (x).

SHIELD’S BIOGRAPHY offers a detailed life of the writer, his strengths and weaknesses, both as an author and a person. The major thrust of the Shields biography is to present Kurt Vonnegut as two different people, the writer and the private person. A nephew told the biographer: There was a definite disconnect between the kind of guy you would imagine Kurt must be from the tone of his books, the kind of guy who would say “God damn it, you got to be kind” and the reality of his behavior on a daily basis. He was a complicated, difficult man. I think he admired the idea of love, community, and family from a distance but couldn’t deal with the complicated emotional elements they included. (Shields 213-14) Tiger Adams was one of the four sons that Vonnegut and his wife Jane adopted after the death of his sister and brother- in-law. In an interview with Shields he recalled that his stepfather, Kurt, “had a cruel side to him, a nasty side that’s why it always struck me, the difference from the guy you would imagine from his writing and the guy that is the real guy.”(166) As Shields notes, Vonnegut’s “public remarks and persona, always circling around humanistic themes, just like his books, created expectations of him.” (326) Kurt Vonnegut’s grim Camus-like view of life, living, and the world was part and parcel of a post–World War II sensibility.

    An Evaluation of Postmodernist Aesthetics in Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse - Five Dr. K. CHELLAMUTHU Associate Professor of English, C.P.A Collge, Bodinayakanur. In his address at the library of congress in 1963, Saul Bellow, the celebrated American writer aptly commented on postmodernist American fiction: 'American novels are filled with complaints over the misfortune of the sovereign self '. It is true that the idea of the 'self' received a jolt with the two World Wars and the Russian Revolution of 1917. The horrendous German tragedy of 1939 saw the reduction of thousands of human beings into heaps of bones. The individual struggling hard to maintain his identity and the 'self' being asked to prepare itself for sacrifice are some of the salient features of the situation reflected in contemporary American fiction. The prefix 'post' doesn't imply a new era; rather, it indicates a reaction, in the wake of the Second World War, against absolute systems of knowledge and philosophical certainty which adorned the foundations of Modernism. Though postmodernist literature doesn't mention all genres of works written in the postmodern period, several post- war developments in literature such as the 'Theatre of the Absurd ', the 'Beat Generation' and 'Magic Realism' have close similarities. These developments are occasionally collectively referred to as 'postmodern'. Some key figures like Samuel Beckett, William S. Burroughs, Jorge Louis Borges, Julio Corta'zar and Gabriel Garcia Ma'rquez are cited as the most significant contributors to the postmodern aesthetic. Modernist literature sees fragmentation and extreme subjectivity as an existential crisis or Freudian internal conflict, a problem that must be solved by the artist himself.

The selected English novels of the past century – Cat’s Cradle (1963), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973) – connect the world of ction to the harsh realities of the world via cre- ative meta ctional strategies, making literature an alarm coated with the comforting lies of storytelling. It is meta ction that enables Vonnegut to create different understandings of historical events by writing a kind of literature that combines facts and ction. De ned as a kind of narrative that “self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as artefact” meta ction stands against the duplicitous “suspension of disbelief” that is simply an imi- tation and interpretation of presumed realities. As a postmodern mode of writing it opts for an undisguised narration that undermines not only the author’s univocal control over ction but also challenges the established understanding of the ideas. Multidimensional di- splay of events and thoughts by Vonnegut works in direction of meta ction to give readers a self-conscious awareness of what they read. Hiroshima bombing in 1946 and the destruction of Dresden in Germany by allied forces in World War II are the subjects of the selected novels respectively.

Patti Smith, Babel (1978) Breakfast of Champions, first published in 1973, is probably one of Kurt Vonnegut's most destructive, pessimistic and nihilistic works. Even if we chose to label it a comedy, or a farce, its humor would still be of a very black qual­ ity.1 Thus, maybe, the book would be more accurately described as a satire verging on tragedy. Vonnegut was not new to the theme of destruction; where the earlier novel Cats Cradle (1963) is a long allegory on power and author­ ity which ends in catastrophe, Mother Night (1961) and Slaughterhouse-Five (1969) unfold as chronicles of private vicissitudes set against the tragic back­ drop of a major historical event, World War II. Along with a deep reflection on identity, ambiguity, and the thorny issue of distinguishing innocence from guilt, both share an outright condemnation of war's useless folly and of all the mystifications often concocted to disguise it. In the latter work, remarkably, the horror of the chosen exemplum — the allied firebombing of the German city of Dresden, which in three days (2/13-15/1945) killed more than 135.000 harmless civilians — is so immense to prove basically impossible to represent. Billy Pilgrim, the young American POW most of the book focuses on, takes shelter in a deep underground meat locker "hollowed in living rock" (S5 209) and so is only able to witness the bomb runs' aftermath, the morning when Dresden suddenly "was like the moon" (S5 229).

    Religion and War Made Strange: Ostranenie in Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five Alexandra Berlina ABSTRACT Kurt Vonnegut was arguably the American twentieth-century specialist in ostranenie (also known as “defamiliarization” and “estrangement”). Nevertheless, this aspect of his work has re- ceived very little attention so far. The present article hopes to fill part of this lacuna, concentrat- ing on the way war and religion are made strange in Slaughterhouse-Five (with some mentions of other works such as Breakfast for Champions). The analysis of these effects forms the bulk of the article (part II), flanked by considerations on ostranenie, particularly in the context of Von- negut’s and Shklovsky’s war experience (part I), and an overview of Vonnegut’s precursors in the ostranenie of religion and war, such as Swift, Twain, and Heller (part III). Shklovsky and Vonnegut Some writers are or pretend to be disinterested in scholarly reception, but not Kurt Vonnegut. Shortly before his death, Vonnegut complained about insufficient academic attention (Shields 1; 4–5). He would have been gratified by the amount of research published in recent years. Considering the importance he ascribed to his German roots (describing himself on the title page of Slaughterhouse-Five, he begins by stating that he is “a fourth-generation German-American”), he might have been particularly flattered by the attention his oeuvre is receiving in Germany, such as Peter Freese’s opus magnum The Clown of Armageddon: The Novels of Kurt Vonnegut, or the recent decision to make Slaughterhouse-Five a must-read for “Abitur” exams in the federal state of Hesse, coupled with the ap- pearance of a lavishly annotated edition intended for school use.

World-weary, pessimistic, cynical, and flippant, Vonnegut is tolerant of human behavior to the point of being overindulgent, sadly convinced that human beings cannot be otherwise than the monsters that they are, and yet paradoxically given to both satire and sermon as though driven on by a hope beyond hopelessness that he may yet turn man from his stupidity and evil. It is the aim of this article to examine the morality myth that Vonnegut has created and at the same time to characterize features of the antinovel with which he expresses this myth. By means of this analysis I hope to demonstrate that Vonnegut's popularity is not to be ascribed to a mere fad, but that in content and form he has represented an important aspect of the outlook of our age. Aesthetically, Vonnegut's early works owe much to science fiction and the canons of Pop Art,3 but his art transcends their hackneyed conventions and should be regarded as serious and original literature. Fiedler contends that we should regard Vonnegut's novels as Pop Art because they focus on fantasy, myth, plot, and entertainment rather than on characterization and demanding symbolism.
