Contributed by Jenny Pollard Mid August saw Stage 2 of Charlton’s beautification project completed with the final plantings of the Crimson Sapphire prunus trees on the east side on Mildura Way. Thanks to the support of the Buloke Shire and the work of Shire gardener, Ken North, the empty nature strips have now been filled with the new trees, some of which are already showing signs of budding. The three-stage project, funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), plus significant local donations is an initiative of the North Central Garden Club. In an effort to boost the town’s streetscape appeal, and create a feeling of community pride, the beautification process has involved extensive communal consultation and input to achieve a positive outcome not just for the present, but for well into the future. Unlike the Stage 1 planting, which involved the use of a hydro- vacuuming vehicle for fast planting, Stage 2 took place over a number of days. During the process a surprising reveal occurred – the discovery of a one metre wide brick gutter on the west side of Mildura Way. (Local history buffs might be able to enlighten us further about the existence of a brickworks in town). With Spring approaching the town should soon be seeing the project literally blossoming before their eyes! More news about the next stage of Charlton’s transformation will be circulated soon. Right: North Central Garden Club member, Bernice Kenny, is pictured with Buloke Shire gardener, Ken North, as the last of the Stage 2 plantings took place in August.

LOUISE STALEY VISITS TRAINING CENTRE The Charlton Harness Racing Club was happy to welcome our local member Louise Staley to tour the Back St. Arnaud Rd Training Facility and talk all things harness recently. President Joe Thompson outlined the recent progress of the club and the vision moving forward which will focus primarily on the development of the training facility. The ultimate aim is to continue to build local trainer numbers creating an economic flow on effect for Charlton which would be significant. Louise was most interested in all facets of the harness racing industry and very positive about the progress already made by the club. She indicated that she saw great potential for growth centred around the new 2020 building and was particularly impressed with the high level of community support and club member engagement during this most difficult COVID 19 period. Louise had the opportunity to meet Mick, Denbeigh and Greg – all current tenants, and the club looks forward to her becoming increasingly involved and aware of the developments that are planned in the near future.
