Graphic novels The following chart6 represents people who are visiting their local comic book shop and buying graphic novels: trade paperback collections of several single issues, larger collections, and standalone books. When combined with the bookstore market, the graphic novel format is a slightly larger part of the overall comics market than singleissues7. This list looks more like a “traditional” idea of comics, with strong superhero presence and comics that have crossover markets in film and television. Single issues The next chart8 represents people who are going into their local comic book shop to buy single issues of comic series. They may be subscribers or they may be buying them one at a time. There are likely many titles on this list that aren’t familiar unless you’re very into comics. This list represents what is brand new, before being collected into trade paperbacks. Many of the top sellers are in their first or early issues with some notable exceptions. 6 TOP 300 GRAPHIC NOVELS ACTUALMARCH 2015, http://icv2.com/articles/news/view/31329/top300graphicnovelsactualmarch2015 7 Comics and graphic novel market reaches $870 million in 2013, http://blog.comichron.com/2014/07/comicsandgraphicnovelmarketreaches.html 8 TOP 300 COMICS ACTUALMARCH 2015, http://icv2.com/articles/news/view/31330/top300comicsactualmarch2015 .

Carol Jago’s Suggestions for Your Classroom Library Welcome to my list of suggestions for your classroom library. It is not meant in any way to be a perfect list. Only you know what titles will be most appealing to your students and which books might be problematic in your school community. I have compiled here a list of books that I believe can open up the world to middle and high school readers. Some of these stories include scenes of violence and/or language that might offend. That said, I have read every one of these books and believe the scenes and language contribute importantly to the authors' intent and message. Thanks for all you do to bring books into your students’ lives. Reading helps us be more fully human. • From Ms Marvel to Ms Shabash
Paper prepared for the Fifth Euroacademia Forum of Critical Studies Asking Big Questions Again 11 – 12 November 2016 Lucca, Italy This paper is a draft Please do not cite or circulate From Ms. Marvel to Ms. Shabash: Sex and Power Distribution in Bangladeshi and Western Cultures Tahseen Salman Choudhury Arzoo Ismail Research and Publication Officer, Bangladesh Lecturer, School of Business Employers’ Federation Bangladesh University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh Abstract The medium of comics is a wonderful preserver of culture. Sequential art can effortlessly portray the latest trends and norms prevalent in any society. Comics from different parts of the world can help identify and analyze cultural differences across borders. Comic books talk about people, their dreams, their aspirations, their activities, and their ways of life. The depiction of norms, trends, traditions, celebrations, and conventions of different groups of people are well-contained in this art form. Western comics have been illustrating all these for years, securing their firm foothold in the world of sequential art. During the last few years, owing to various factors like the rise of comic-book based TV shows, superhero movies, and comic cons regularly happening in Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi comic book industry has experienced a boom. This paper aimed to identify and analyze the representation of cultures across a sample of Bangladeshi and western comics that were published during the last five years in order to determine the role of gender in the respective societies on the basis of Social Dominance Theory (SDT). While looking into societies via comics, Bangladesh remained the primary focus. Simultaneously, western comics aided in running a comparative study between the respective societies in terms of intergroup oppression, discrimination, and prejudice.

  • The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults
The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults Volume 6: August 2015 www.yalsa.ala.org/jrlya Adolescent Females and the Graphic Novel: A Content Analysis Emily Simmons, ELA Teacher, Hernando Middle School Abstract Numerous studies of adolescent reading preferences have found that fewer females than males are drawn to reading graphic novels. Why? Adolescent readers are diverse in gender and race/ethnicity as well as the disabilities they represent. Do main characters in graphic novels reflect that diversity? Has representation changed over time? Using a content analysis approach, this study examined the main characters in a set of recommended popular graphic novels for teens to determine the percentage of female protagonists and how that percentage has changed over a seven-year period. Additionally, the race/ethnicity and any disabilities of the female main characters were analyzed. The 70 recommended graphic novels and illustrated nonfiction for teens ages 12 to 18 used for the study were found on YALSA’s “Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens” lists from 2007 through 2013. Female main characters were found in 46% of the titles, with 24% of these titles having only female main characters while 22% had both female and male main characters; the female main characters represented three of five race categories identified by the U.S. Census Bureau and four of the fourteen disability classifications identified by IDEA. Introduction Enticing adolescents to read has been and remains today a core objective for librarians, educators, and parents. At any age, reading preferences reflect reading interests; therefore, it is essential for libraries and schools to provide a varied collection of books to meet a myriad of interests.
