Chapter I

1. General Infom ation ; The District Report on the fifth All ’Tn3Ia**Ef3uca^ronal^ servey has b e ^ prepared on the basis of the data collected through 12B tables^ The report gives the picture of the various educational facilities available in villages in each Block development area and Urban towns as on 30,^*198S the particulars furnished in the tables have been collected through the village infoimation foims and the lArfi school info mid tion foimso

Topography of the District; The then Tirunelv^li District

'^as bifurcated into two viz, the Chidambaranar District and the Ti ran^vely Kattabomman district on 5 * 9 3 6 . It i s flanked by the V*0, Chidambaramar district in the east and the western ghat in the west kanyakumari district lies on its southern border wiriile the kamarajar district lies on its northern border. It has an area of 6838 sq, kms<, It consists of nine taluks viz .Sivagiri, Sankaran kovil, 3iencottah Tenkasi> Ti.iunelvely, palayamcottai, , and f^dhapuram. There are 19 ELocks Municipalities and two town^ips, i. 9, courtallarn and sankarnagar. The total number of villages in the Riral area is 553 which included 27 uninhabited villsiges an i i8 43 habitations.,

Irrigationi The Tambaraparani in the main perennial river Ravln^-t-t-s source in th eV ^stem ghats at papanasam and manimuthar arg, the two dapi ~ constructed across tho river Tambaraparani'*‘^supply water nnd hydro electricity regularly.

33.vagiri, aankarankc.il and Padapuram are the taluks in the iry lands having only x scanty rainfall. Hence the forewell s and manam^ ri tanks on the source for irrigation in the sp taluks«» ^ i n crops; The ^'iain cio psa. e paddy‘ plantain, ^garcane camTiD”” T?all5 cottan an.d chillies in some part of the district where the land i s fertile*

Industries: The Tiranelveli Katxabomman district is industrially ‘E)acEwal’^ ' “There is a c ^ e n t factory at Talayuthu near Tiiunelvely^ Cottan, ginning and spinning mills are located at ^^anguneri, Timnelvely Veerav'^nallur and Ambasamudram. The ^^adura coats weaving mill at Vicki ram a sing apu ram papanasam is one of the industry in this district. The sun paper mill at cheranmahadevi produces new print paper. Tile- makings, bricksnaking, pottaries? lion industries} carbide industries brass and aluminium vessels making are same of the minor industries in this district.

The second phase training for tiie Block survey officers (i(t) Daputy Inspectors of schools for filling up the Block level fonns was conducted from 10.9.87 to lo.?*87 at The^rthapathy Higher sacon isry sdbool Tables fmm rJo, i to 12B vrare distributed to th?tn. These tables were prepared by the Deputy Inspectors of schools with the help of school information foims and vj..llage infonnation foims.

Tha village infoimation foms have infoim-^tions relating to popul ',tion schooling and other educational faodlities in the village th 3y have the materials fOfTUK-the census data of U 86 and infoimation from the village officers. The Block Develpment offic3rs haVG also helped to fill up the questionaires l-*9* The has 15 itans and the urban Information foim has ll i t ^ s to b? filled in which pertains to pupulaticn school age children, racognised schooling facilities non foimal ani aiult educition available in each village. These foims were fillei up by 'ohe h3s(3^i‘asters of th-^ primary upper primary secondary Higner secondary schools pf^rtaining to each village. There are ]343 habitations in rural area in this district Educational facilities at the primary school levol are avail)able for 1734 rural habl tations wi th a total pupulation of 16,47,167* This forms 91^5:^ of tha total population of these 132B habitations with a total papulation of 15,32,20 5 have primary sectio nw ithin the habitation limit itself and 403 habitations with a total population of 1 ,1 4 ,9 6 2 .‘have primary sections with ina kilometre reach.

Among the 19 blocks in the district conpresent (lOO^) habitations of pal ayamkottai , shecottah, Tenkasi and kilapavoor blocks are served with primary education on-y 75, 5i of the habitations in are served by primary sections- A stationt avowing the facilities for primary sections in rural habitations is givan below.
