GENEVA STATE FOREST WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA (Geneva and Covington Counties) ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES WILDLIFE AND FRESHWATER FISHERIES Hunting Regulations – September 2020 - August 2021

PERMITS: This map or using the WMA App shall serve as your Season Hunting Permit for all game in accordance with season, species, bag limit, firearms and rules applicable to the WMA. Daily permits for some gun deer hunts may be issued on a self-serve basis from the checking station located at 1119 Forest Area Road, Kinston, which will open no later than 5:00 a.m. WMA permits will be available at Clem’s Tackle Shop, Hwy. 84 W., Opp; Lockhart Grocery, Florala; Pridgen’s Store, 4 miles west of Samson on Hwy. 52; and on a self-service basis from the checking station. Permits requested by mail should be made to Area Biologist Griff Johnson, 1119 Forest Area Road, Kinston, AL 36453 (Telephone [334] 898-7013). Request must include current hunting license number and large, stamped, self-addressed envelope. Trapping permits may be obtained only from area biologist.

NOTE: ● A State Hunting License, Wildlife Management Area (WMA) License and a WMA permit are required when hunting deer, turkey, or waterfowl on a WMA. For residents, a State hunting license or Wildlife Heritage License and WMA permit are required for hunting small game, except waterfowl, on WMA. Nonresidents must possess a WMA license in addition to a hunting license and WMA permit to hunt big and small game. ● Youth hunters on youth deer and turkey hunts must be less than 16 years of age. Supervisors must be 21 years old or older, or a parent, and must be properly licensed. Youth must remain within 30 feet of supervisors at all times. ● Statewide antlered buck season bag limit applies to all WMAs. ● Administrators of the hunt shall have the right to distribute the hunters and to inspect all vehicles or other equipment while on the areas. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and landowners, who are making the hunting possible, hereby put each hunter on notice that he hunts at his own risk and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and such landowners shall not be responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur.

In addition to appropriate licenses, a WMA Map Permit is required in App or paper form on this WMA for all hunters 16 years of age and older. Hunters who fully complete the WMA Check-In/Check Out on the Outdoor Alabama app are not required to be in possession of a paper copy of the WMA Map Permit. Check-In and Check-Out must be completed upon arrival and departing the WMA. If not using this feature of the app, hunters must have a signed paper copy of the WMA Map Permit in their possession. A separate Daily Permit will be issued on specific gun deer hunts from the checking station. All harvests on these days must be brought to the check station.

HUNTING DATES: DEER: (Youth) Stalk Hunting Hunter’s Choice: Nov. 14 Two deer a day, one unantlered deer and one antlered buck. (Gun) Stalk Hunting Hunter’s Choice: Nov. 24-28, Dec. 15-19, and Dec. 29-Jan. 2. Two deer a day, one unantlered deer and one antlered buck. *Antlered buck restrictions apply. Stalk Hunting Antlered Bucks Only: Jan. 13-17 and Feb. 1-10 (Feb. 6 Bonus Buck Day, must be validated by WFF personnel). One antlered buck a day. *Antlered buck restrictions apply. (Dog) Dog Hunting Antlered Bucks Only: Dec. 11-12. One antlered buck a day. By Limited quota permit only. Dogs must be approved by DCNR personnel. *Antlered buck restrictions apply. (Primitive Weapons) Stalk Hunting Hunter’s Choice: Nov. 16-20. Two deer a day, one unantlered deer and one antlered buck. *Antlered buck restrictions apply. Archery hunters must obtain deer permit on days of gun hunts and abide by all gun deer hunt regulations. *Antlered buck restrictions apply.

*To be legal for harvest, antlered bucks must have at least three (3) antler points (1 inch or longer) on at least one main beam.

TURKEY: (Youth) Mar. 13 (daylight until 1:00p.m.). Gobblers only. All hunters must record their harvest at the check station or by WMA App. (Physically Disabled) Mar. 19 (daylight until 1:00p.m.). Gobblers only. All hunters must record their harvest at the check station or by WMA App.. (Regular) Mar. 20 – May 2 (daylight until 1:00p.m.). Gobblers only. All hunters must record their harvest at the check station or by WMA App. DOVE: State seasons (12:00 noon to sunset). Saturdays and Wednesdays only. No hunting on days of youth, gun, dog, and primitive weapons deer hunts. QUAIL: Nov. 7-Feb. 28. No hunting on days of youth, gun, dog, and primitive weapons deer hunts. & SQUIRREL: Sept. 12 - Mar. 7. No hunting on days of youth, gun, dog, and primitive weapons deer hunts. Fox squirrel season closed during February and March. RACCOON, OPOSSUM, & FOX: Sept. 12 – Feb. 28 (nighttime hours only). No hunting on nights preceding or nights of youth, gun, and primitive weapons deer hunts. Fox hunting - dogs only, no weapons. COYOTE, , & FOX: Open during any other scheduled WMA Hunting Season using weapons and ammunition approved for those hunts. No dogs allowed. Daylight hours only. One fox a day. SNIPE: State Season. No hunting on days of youth, gun, dog, and primitive weapons deer hunts. WOODCOCK: State Season. No hunting on days of gun deer hunts. CROW: Sept.12 – Feb. 28. No hunting on days of gun and primitive weapons deer hunts. WATERFOWL: State seasons. No hunting on days of youth, gun, dog, and primitive weapons deer hunts. FURBEARER TRAPPING (excluding feral swine): Oct. 31 – Feb. 28 (Excluding Dec. 4-5). Trapping permits must be obtained from Area Biologist. All trappers must wear hunter orange while trapping on days of gun deer hunts.

BAG LIMITS: Deer – Youth and Hunter’s Choice Gun Deer Hunts (except spotted fawns) –Two deer per day – one unantlered deer and one antlered buck; Hunters’ Choice Archery (except spotted fawns) – Two deer per day – one unantlered deer and one antlered buck; Turkey - (Gobblers only) - 1 a day (5 per season); Squirrel - 8 a day; Quail - 8 a day; Rabbit - 8 a day; Woodcock - 3 a day; Dove - 15 a day; Coyote – no limit; Waterfowl - Federal & State Regulations apply.

IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL: 1. To hunt, trap, use dogs, possess firearms, ammunition, traps or bow and arrow without a valid permit. A permit is valid only during scheduled WMA seasons during legal hunting hours and only with weapons and ammunition permitted for hunting the wildlife listed on permit. 2. To use dogs for stalk hunting of deer or for turkey hunting or for hunting, training or any purpose from March 9th until August 31st 3. For any person under 16 years of age to hunt on the WMA unless accompanied at all times by. an adult who is 21 years old or older or the parent and a properly licensed hunter. 4. For any person to hunt deer with gun or bow and arrow on scheduled gun deer hunts without first obtaining and possessing a daily permit from check station on specific hunt dates as designated on the WMA permit. 5. For any person to carry firearms in or on vehicle with ammunition in the magazine, breech or clip attached to firearms, or black powder weapons with primer, cap or flash powder in place (except for legally licensed handguns). 6. To kill or willfully molest any species of wildlife except those designated for hunting. However, this regulation shall not apply to bobcat, feral swine, or coyote which may be killed during all scheduled WMA hunts, during daylight hours only, that occur during the dates of the gun deer and turkey seasons for the county or counties in which the WMA is located, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts. 7. To discharge fireworks at any time. 8. To discharge firearms for target practice. 9. To hunt or discharge firearms within 150 yards of any camping area, dwelling, dam or timber operation, or within 100 yards of any public road, highway, or within a posted safety zone, or within one-half mile of a church on Sunday or from within the right-of-way of any developed road (paved or unpaved) which is open to vehicular traffic. 10. To possess open alcoholic beverages outside designated camping areas. 11. To transport deer killed during the youth and gun hunts from the WMA before being examined at the checking station for scientific data, or by WMA as described above. 12. For any person, except authorized personnel, to ride horses or operate any motor driven vehicle behind, under or around any locked gate, barricaded road or sign which prohibits vehicular traffic. 13. For any unauthorized person to possess and/or operate any unlicensed motor driven vehicle on the WMA per 220-2-.55 (v) except when engaged in hunting or retrieving deer and utilized on regularly used roads open for public use by 4-wheel vehicle traffic. This regulation, 220-2-55 (v), does not apply to Alabama Forestry Commission owned portions of Geneva WMA – Zone B; provided they are utilized on regularly used roads open for public use by 4-wheel traffic 14. For any person to hunt any wildlife species (except turkey, migratory birds and while hunting legally designated species during legal nighttime hours) without wearing the minimum requirement of hunter orange as described in 220-2-.85. 15. For any person, except authorized personnel, to block or otherwise stop traffic on any road by parking a vehicle in such a way that passage around the vehicle is impossible. 16. To deposit, possess, distribute or scatter corn, grain, salt, litter, or any other materials on WMA prior to receiving approval from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. 17. For any person to damage or remove any trees, crops or other plants, dirt, gravel or sod from WMA without legal authorization. 18. To erect or use a permanent tree stand or scaffold on management area without written permission from the landowners. No elevated stands may be used within 50 yards of the WMA boundary line. 19. To camp on WMA except in designated sites. Individuals or groups may camp on the WMA for a period not to exceed nine (9) days in any 30-day period. Campfires must be extinguished before departing. No warming fires shall be permitted away from camping area. 20. To hunt from an elevated stand or platform without attaching themselves to the tree or platform with a full body safety harness capable of supporting their weight. 21. For dog hunters on dog deer hunts to leave stand assigned to them until instructed. 22. To ride horses on any scheduled youth, primitive weapons, dog, or gun deer hunt date; or to ride horses before 1 pm during turkey season 23. Users should refer to WMA Regulation 220-2-.55 for the complete list of WMA specific regulations.
