Feeding Our Furry Friends

Submitted by Nicole Wilks, Founder

What started out as a side hustle for one BC couple has grown into a team of over 20 & Okanagan residents with one shared mission: Feeding Our Furry Friends. The Animal Food Bank is a non-profit, completely volunteer based initiative that col- lects and distributes pet food and supplies to animals in need; with locations in both the Okanagan and now Winnipeg. The Animal Food Bank aims to help bridge the gap between poverty and the pet’s wellbeing. Operating with the mandate of no-one should go hungry, the Animal Food Bank team facilitates drop off stations at local partici- pating businesses where people are able to donate food and sup- plies. The team then works together to col- lect these donations and distribute weekly to shelters, organizations and churches in the area that lend helping hands to those without a home, or those struggling financially. Because at the root of it - hunger does not discriminate. Any one of us can be a single crisis away from not being able to feed their pet, or having to make the heart wrenching decision to surrender their life-long friends. The Animal Food Bank never wants people, or their pets, to be put in that place regardless of their Ph: 204-224-2551 life’s circumstances. I have had some great opportunities to work, train, and instruct in Western Canada, Ontario and the United States. During nearly half my service, I became a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). I was in a “middle Management position” In this leadership role I had various administrative duties. I enjoyed conducting drill practice which also goes back to my time with the Air Cadets. My greatest accomplishment in the mili - tary was working as a Peacekeeper with the United Nations. In 1993, I was deployed with the Second Battalion-Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) to the for - mer Yugoslavia. We were part of a battle group of approximately 800 Canadian Sol - diers that included a few hundred reservists like me. This was known as the “Medak Pocket” tour. It was an eye-opening experi - ence. During our tour, the battle group moved from Sector West to Sector South in Croatia. We encountered resistance from the locals, witness ethnic cleansing and were subject to shelling and small arms fire. Overall, this expe - rience made me appreciate being Canadian and enjoy the freedom we sometimes take for granted. Tragically, two Canadian Soldiers lost their lives during this mission. In 2002, Adrienne Clarkson, the former Governor General awarded the Commander- in-Chief Unit Commendation (CinC) decora - tion to the members of the 2 PPCLI Battle Group for accomplishments in the former Yugoslavia. This special ceremony was held at the old Winnipeg Arena. My Grandfather was my inspiration for joining the military and ultimately joining the Legion. He served during World War II with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (QOCH) out of Minto Armoury. He participated on the Raid on Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942. This was one of the bloodiest chapters in Canadian Military History. My Grandfather was captured by the Germans but survived the war. He passed away when I was young.
