[email protected] Abstract New records and locations of the robber flies Machimus blascoi Weinberg & Bächli, 2001 and Psilocurus blascoi Weinberg & Bächli, 2001, from Los Monegros region (Spain) are presented in this paper, as well as the first information available about their ecology. Besides, M. blascoi is shown in photographs taken in the wild and in its natural habitat for the first time. INTRODUCTION Asilidae is one of the most important families of order Diptera and called robber flies which belonging to super family Asiloidea likely originated close to 200 million years ago (Wiegmann et al., 2003). Adults of this family attack insects of the most orders, such as: bees, other flies, Odonata, dragonflies and Homoptera, grasshoppers; even some spiders are eaten by the robber flies (Lavigne et al., 1978; Lavigne, 2001). Robber flies are particularly abundant in space, dry and sunny shining localities, which get best conditions in which to show their many forms and behaviors (Shurovnekov, 1962). Females deposit egg, white / yellow and brown on low-lying plants and some weeds, in the sand, bark or wood. The larval growth is good in hottest regions but many asilid members live no longer than one year (Cannings, 1998; Geller-Grimm, 2005).

An updated catalogue of asilid genera is necessary to summarise the numerous nomenclatural changes and additional information on genera distributions published during the last 30 years. The catalogue includes 528 valid genus-group names, 24 subgenera, 133 synonyms, 44 homo- nyms, 18 nomina nuda, and 71 misspelled names (818 entries). This catalogue reflects no- menclatural changes published before 2002 and reveals a 30% increase in the number of genus-group names. The list of genus-group names contains information on the original citation of each taxon, the respective type species, and known distribution.

In total 289 species and subspecies representing 88 genera and 9 subfamilies (Apocleinae, Asilinae, Atomosinae, Dasypogoninae, Laphriinae, Laphystiinae, Leptogastrinae, Ommatiinae, Stenopogoninae) are listed. Introduction Robber flies or assassin flies (Asiloidea, Asilidae) comprise one of the most taxonomi- cally diverse, speciose, and conspicuous families of Diptera (BARNES et al. 2007). This family is particularly known for its predatory habits and mimicry of other insects, especi- ally bees and wasps (Hymenoptera) (LAVIGNE et al. 1978). Robber flies are an important group of predators in all zoogeographical regions (LONDT 2006), and are characteristic of steppe and desert landscapes (ASTAKHOV 2011). Over 7,000 valid species are known, representing 530 genera and subgenera; these are distributed throughout the world, ex- cept in the Arctic and the Antarctic. In addition, 18 genera and 39 species have been described from the Eocene, Oligocene, and Miocene; 15 of these genera exist today (GHAHARI et al. 2007c). Asilids display both great diversity and abundance in arid regions, and in grasslands (LONDT 2006). These are highly effective predatory as adults (both sexes) and larvae, feeding mainly on insects and more rarely, on spiders.

However, an evaluation of available data summarized in the Asilidae Predator-Prey Database reveals that spiders make up only a small percentage of the robber fly diet (less than 1% of approximately 58,000 prey listed in the Database). The types of spider chosen as prey are discussed and examined in relation to robber fly classification. Robber fly methods of capturing spiders are examined and comments about spiders preying upon robber flies are provided. Key words: Araneae, spiders, prey, robber flies, Diptera, Asilidae. INTRODUCTION There are approximately 43,000 described species of spiders (Araneae) (Platnick 2011) that are found world-wide on every continent except Antarctica. Because robber flies (Insecta: Diptera: Asilidae) are opportunistic predators that also can be found in many similar habitats, one would expect spiders to serve as prey in proportional numbers to other arthropod prey. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role that spiders play as prey of robber flies.
