In this regard, the steep decline in North American buyout fundraising in 2018 seems to be market noise rather than a clear signal as fundraising for the first two months of 2019 is back to 2017’s breakneck pace. The headlines for China over the last few years have highlighted such issues as slowing economic growth, increased strategic tensions with its neighbors and the United States over the South China Sea, and trade tensions with the United States. What has not been as obvious, perhaps, has been the continued interest in private equity fundraising for funds focused on China as well as Pan-Asian funds with significant allocations to Greater China.
