21 October 2020 – 1 August 2021 1 2 As we celebrate the third anniversary of the opening of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech and the launch of the Musée Pierre Bergé des Arts Berbères within the Jardin Majorelle, it is most poignant that we render homage to the great Bert Flint with this exhibition. A passionate collector and defender of the varied aspects of the rich ethnic heritage that defines Morocco, Bert Flint has been a beacon for decades in championing the diversity manifested in the Kingdom’s myriad cultural identities. In 2018, the Éditions Jardin Majorelle was honored to publish Bert Flint’s book African-Berber Culture: Neolithic Traditions of the Sahara in North Africa and the Sahel Region, a synthesis of his long-term research and travels. The Fondation Jardin Majorelle‘s Amazigh collection was immensely enriched by Bert Flint’s donation of over 600 textile pieces. It is with gratitude and admiration that we present this selection of extraordinary objects from his personal collection. Flawlessly curated by Mouna Mekouar, assisted by Marie-Christine Lebasle, and in close collaboration with Bert Flint, this exhibition equally attests to the cooperative efforts of the Majorelle team during a most challenging moment in the Foundation’s history. I applaud all of them for an extraordinary installation and one that will surely fascinate both our Moroccan and foreign guests. May this homage to Bert Flint and his beloved Morocco be yet another example of our passion for this marvelous country. I., . 1 / / ., l I. - ' PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION THEvolume here translated appeared originally in 1904 as one of the excellent series of handbooks which, in addition to descriptive catalogues, are ~rovidedby the Berlin Museums for the guida,nce of visitors to their great collections. The haud- book of the Egyptian Religion seemed cspecially worthy of a wide circulation. It is a survey by the founder of the modern school of Egyptology in Germany, of perhaps tile most interest- ing of all the departments of this subject. The Egyptian religion appeals to some because of its endless variety of form, and the many phases of superstition and belief that it represents ; to others because of its early recognition of a high moral principle, its elaborate conceptions of a life aftcr death, and its connection with the development of Christianity; to others again no doubt because it explains pretty things dear to the collector of antiquities, and familiar objects in museums. Professor Erman is the first to present the Egyptian religion in historical perspective; and it is surely a merit in his worlc that out of his profound knowledge of the Egyptian texts, he permits them to tell their own tale almost in their own words, either by extracts or by summaries. -

By Edmund Burke III Although the period 1900-1912 was replete with numerous important social upheavals and insurrections, many of which directly threatened the French position in Morocco, none of them generated a contemporaneous French effort to discover what went wrong. Instead, the movements were coded as manifestations of supposedly traditional Moroccan anarchy and xenophobia and as such, devoid of political meaning. On the face of it, this finding is surprising. How could a French policy that billed itself as “scientific imperialism” fail to consider the socio-genesis of Moroccan protest and resistance? Despite its impressive achievements, the Moroccan colonial archive remains haunted by the inability of researchers to pierce the cloud of orientalist stereotypes that occluded their vision of Moroccan society as it actually was. For most historians, the period of Moroccan history between 1900 and 1912 is primarily known as “the Moroccan Question.” A Morocco-centered history of the Moroccan Question was impossible for Europeans to imagine. Moroccan history was of interest only insofar as it shed light on the diplomatic origins of World War I. European diplomats were the main actors in this drama, while Moroccans were pushed to the sidelines or reduced to vulgar stereotypes: the foolish and spendthrift sultan Abd al-Aziz and his fanatic and anarchic people. Such an approach has a degree of plausibility, since the “Moroccan Question” chronology does provide a convenient way of structuring events: the Anglo-French Accord (1904), the landing of the Kaiser at Tangier (1905), the Algeciras conference (1906), the landing of French troops at Casablanca (1907), the Agadir incident (1911) and the signing of the protectorate treaty (1912). -

Voltaire characterized the time between the early fourteenth to the late sixteenth centuries as one of the greatest ages of human cultural achievement. Wegner The site of South Abydos was home to royal mortuary complexes of both the late Middle, and New Kingdoms, belonging to Senwosret III and Ahmose. Thanks to both recent and past excavations, both of these royal establishments are fairly well understood. Yet, we lack a clear picture of the mortuary practices of the non- royal individuals living and working in the shadow of these institutions. For both periods, the main question is where the tombs of the non-royal citizens might exist. Additionally for the Middle Kingdom is the related issue of how these people commemorated their dead ancestors. Divided into two parts, this dissertation looks at the ways in which non-royal individuals living at South Abydos during these two periods dealt with burial and funerary commemoration. -

(Wendy Golding 2012) ii SUMMARY In this dissertation I examine the role played by the ancient Near Eastern serpent in apotropaic and prophylactic magic. Within this realm the serpent appears in roles in healing and protection where magic is often employed. The possibility of positive and negative roles is investigated. The study is confined to the Bronze Age in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Syria-Palestine. The serpents, serpent deities and deities with ophidian aspects and associations are described. By examining these serpents and deities and their roles it is possible to incorporate a comparative element into his study on an intra- and inter- regional basis. In order to accumulate information for this study I have utilised textual and pictorial evidence, as well as artefacts (such as jewellery, pottery and other amulets) bearing serpent motifs. -

The main activity of the population is agriculture, mainly date palm cultivation occupying a total area of 23,532 ha. The climate of Adrar region is continental desert characterized by a high variation in temperatures exceeding 48°C between July to August and 16°C between December to January. The rainfall is very limited in frequency and volume with an aridity index of 4.6 to 5.0 which corresponds to a typical arid climate. Geologically Adrar region is located on the edge North Westand is characterized by a Precambrian basement covering stolen sedimentary deposit of Phanerozoic age transgressively. The depression is filled by Touat site Paleozoic deposits (Cambrian to Namurian) of a vast sedimentary basin extending secondary age of the Saharan Atlas to the North of hamada(Tinhirt- Tademaït), the plateau to the South, Touat-Gourara to the West and Gulf of Gabes in the Northeast. This work outlines a study of the geothermal potential of Adrar region from the borehole data in various sites across the area of 400,000 km²; from the data we developed distribution plots of the data of the various points and boreholes in the region specifying information on available geothermal potential at various depths. -

The text describes renewal of life in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb collection. It provides the hier- natural cycle of the Sun at the end of the adventures of the joint oglyphic text, with its transliteration and translation, of Papyrus nocturnal journey of the god Re and a human soul.
