Measuring aids: for sight-and-pace method, Scouts need to measure how many normal walking paces (1 pace = 2 steps) equal 30m (or 100 ft). Have them repeat a time or two for to get a consistent measurement.

Two simple height-measuring techniques:

1) Felling method. Hold stick at arm’s length, adjust so the top of the stick is at the top of the object to be measured; put thumb at the base of the object. Rotate stick 90° so it is parallel to ground; have another scout mark where the top of the stick lays. Pace from base of object to that point, that’s the same distance as the height of the object.

2) Proportional measurement. Have one scout of known height stand next to object to be measured. Hold stick at arm’s length so top of stick is at the scout’s head, mark the scout’s feet with your thumb. Move the thumb to the top of the scout’s head, mark position of tip of the stick; repeat as many times as necessary. Add number of scout-lengths to get object height.

Width-measuring technique: if the feature to be measured can’t be crossed- 1) Note a point on opposite side of feature to be measured (blue triangle in image). 2) Starting at point (red star) directly across from noted point, walk 25 paces at a right angle from the line between starting point and noted point. Place a stick or other mark at that point (yellow star). 3) Walk an additional 25 paces, mark point with another stick or other object (green star). 4) Turn 90 degrees and walk away from object to be measured, to a point where first marked stick (yellow star) lines up with object on opposite side of feature (blue triangle). Distance from green star to blue star (D) is the same as the width of the feature to be measured.
