JAZZ RAMBLER SUMMER (AUGUST) 2017 PAGE 5 Upcoming Monthly Concert Series Jazz Jammers – August 20 John Contreras and his band of merry musicians have played at Fuddruckers in Grossmont Center in La Mesa for over 17 years. In addition, the band has performed in Balboa Park at the Twilight in Park Concerts series (Aug. 30 this year), the AFCDJS monthly concerts, countless private parties, and, of course, the San Diego Jazz Fest. Listeners and dancers alike enjoy Jazz Jammers (aka Dixie Express) and its interpretation of trad jazz and swing classics. John is the reedman and, together with trombonist Lee Fugal and pianist Dan Kitchen, is one of the featured vocalists. Ken Lemke (trumpet), Jim Goodwin (banjo/guitar), Fred Allee (drums), and Stan Kling (tuba) complete the lineup. Be sure to hear them on Aug. 20 and don’t forget your parasols and ‘shout rags.’

Titanic Jazz Band – Sept. 17 For over 20 years, Titanic Jazz Band has been one of the top traditional jazz bands in the U.S.! Organized in 1993, the band has performed at nearly every festival, concert series and jazz club on the West Coast. Interestingly, both the personnel and the repertoire of the Titanic Jazz Band have remained stable throughout most of the group’s existence — a remarkable tribute to the dedication of Titanic’s musicians. Cornetist Dan Comins leads the band, which also includes Keith Elliott, trombone; Mike Baird, reeds; Robbie Rhodes, piano; Vince Saunders, banjo; Ray Cadd, tuba; and Larry Wright, drums. Come to the Mississippi Room on Sept. 17 for a “Trad” experience you are sure to enjoy. Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing Orchestra – Oct. 15 Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing continue to attract enthusiastic crowds. The band plays blues, swing, boogie woogie and jazz standards at clubs, park concerts and events across San Diego and throughout California. Motel Swing is one of the most popular bands in the AFCDJS monthly concert series and at the SD Jazz Fest where it is an integral part of the Saturday night “Swing Extravaganza.” An excellent mix of tempos and a strong beat help to make the band a favorite of dancers no matter what one’s style may be. Led by the “Queen of Boogie Woogie” on piano, the other Motel Swingers are April West, trombone; Jonny Viau, tenor sax; Steve Wilcox, guitar; Pete Harrison, bass; Sharon Shufelt, drums; Deejha Marie and Sharifah, vocals.
