Noteworthy winter records for the reporting per10d 1nclude s1ght1ngs of several spec1es rarely seen 1n the state. These included a Red-necked Grebe near Lov1ng, a Brown Pelican near Cl1ff, a Harlequ1n Duck at B1tter Lake Nat10nal W11dl1fe Refuge, Red-breasted Mergansers reported from three d1fferent locali­ t1es, two Harr1s Hawks near Hatch, a Caracara near Columbus, Sprague Pipits near Rodeo and at Percha Dam State Park, a Hutton V1reo at Rodeo, and a Sol1tary V1reo near Cl1ff. Unusual w1nter1ng records included two Rivol1 Humm1ngbirds near Albu­ querque, and an immature male Anna Humm1ngbird at Las Cruces. In add1tion, several Cass1n Sparrows were reported near Rodeo dur1ng January and February. Spr1ng records 1ncluded the discovery of a male Coppery-ta11ed Trogon 1n the An1mas Mounta1ns, a White-w1nged Crossbill at Sand1a Crest near Albuquerque, and the state's f1rst Roseate Tern was photographed near Roswell. Add1t1onal noteworthy spring records 1ncluded a louis1ana Heron at Roswell, a Wood Thrush at las Vegas, a Le Conte Sparrow in southern Dona Ana County, and a Golden-crowned Sparrow near Silver City.

FLAMMULATED OWL uns/rec--1 reportedly heard at Cottonwood Gulch 3/7,11 {AM} was extremely early. PYGMY OWL win/rec--1 at Farmington 12117 {AN}. Sp/rec--1 at E1 Morro 317 {AM}, and 2-3 observed 3/24 near Snow L. for an extended period, during which time mating was observed {JD}. SAW-WHET OWL con/rec--il!ieen and heard at Cottonwood Gulch 3/7,11 {AM}. WHIP-POR-WILL con/rec--i heard in the Cook's Range 4/23 {JH}. HUMMINGBIRD sp. uns/rec--an all green hummingbird was seen 1/16 in Alamogordo {LM+}, it was probably an Anna Hummingbird. BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD sp/arr--present at Glenwood 3125 {8M} and at Farmington by 4/9 {AN}. COSTA HUMMINGBIRD con/rec--3 adult males and 2 immature birds were banded 5/6-7 in Guadalupe Canyon {WB}. A careful census showed that at least 6 adult males, an immature male, and 2 immature birds were present in the New Mexico portion of the canyon; an extended search in the Arizona portion of the canyon located only 1 addi­ tional bird. ANNA HUMMINGBIRD uns/recui wintered in Las Cruces {Tom Todson, fide WB,TM,WP}. BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD sp/arr--present at Glenwood 3125 {BM}. RIVOLI HUMMINGBIRD uns/rec--an adult male and an immature bird wintered at Sandia Park {MH+}.

CASSIN SPARROW con/rec--1 skylarking from a fence post 4/28 near Belen (JDu), 1 at Pleasanton (first Catron County record) and 2 at Gila 3/29 (JH), 3+ skylarking near Las Cruces 3/22-23 (TH); unslrec --No birds were heard singing from Tucumcari to Portales to Artesia 417-10, nor were any heard near Alamogordo at this time in spite of several extended searches (JH). Additional birds included 13 near Rodeo III (FS), 3+ at San Simon Ctenaga 2/5 (JH), and present and singing near Rodeo 3/17-4/15 (RS). TREE SPARROW con/rec::r-reported at Roswell 12/17 (JC+).
