The Wessex League applauds the decision taken by the and EFL to collectively support all players, managers and individuals who wish to take the knee ahead of matches this season. Taking the knee is an individual choice that many players wish to make as a way of peacefully demonstrating against racism, discrimination and injustice. Consequently, the Wessex League has no objection to players, match officials and technical area occupants taking the knee at their discretion. Home and away clubs that wish to do so must notify their opponents and match officials as part of the match confirmation process, and if players from one club do wish to take a knee their opponents are under no obligation to do likewise. Subject to the above disclaimer, readers may want to take note that on Saturday 28 August there is a chance of a double, with New Milton Town against Andover New Street kicking off at noon. WESSEX FIXTURE DATES IN HISTORY

In case you missed it last week, I am trying to complete the story over fixture dates for our competition since the first season. Thanks to help already received, plus personal knowledge; out of over 29,000 games there are just 19 (with three of those where I have tentative dates) remain where the date eludes me at time of writing. I do also have one further query, in 1997/98 Christchurch beat Romsey 3-1; the date I have is 12 April, which is a Sunday. It looks more than likely it should be Monday 13 April (it was Easter weekend) but would greatly appreciate confirmation – or that a correction can be made. Help in filling the gaps would be appreciated- please contact me at [email protected] or through social media channels.

PROGRAMMES

All programmes must contain the following adverts: MJM Sports, Voice FM and FA Respect as approved by the Board. These adverts can be downloaded from the league website but they may also be found in this Newsletter. It is a league requirement that clubs must produce a programme for each home game in the League and League Cup. Separate rules apply for the FA competitions and Senior County cups. Clubs can choose to either print their programme or have an online version but may not alternate. Please note that all online programmes must be submitted to Mike Robins the League Media Officer at [email protected] 24 hours prior to kick-off. At time of writing only four clubs have advised of using the online method. The programme competition will run again this season, clubs will be advised of two dates in the season when printed programmes are to be submitted to an address as notified, these are the only [two] programmes that will be used for judging purposes, late entries or (unagreed) alternative ones will not be accepted. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, good luck.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING BLOCKED HOURS AND LIVE STREAMING OF MATCHES

You may recall that the previously enforced “blocked hours” were lifted owing to COVID-19 and the inability of Clubs to play in front of fans (or restrictions in spectator numbers) at matches in the . As a result of the return of spectators blocked hours will be reintroduced for the 2021/22 season. To that end, please note the broadcasting of matches (including live streaming) during “blocked hours” is prohibited from 7th August 2021. To clarify, the streaming of matches outside of blocked hours is permitted. For FA Cup, Trophy and Vase fixtures Clubs must adhere to the specific competition Regulations pursuant to broadcasting. What are blocked hours? Blocked hours are set time periods occurring on a Saturday when it is prohibited to broadcast any form of live football. Blocked hours for Season 2021-2022 are every Saturday occurring during each period set out below between the hours of 14:45 and 17:15 - Saturday 7 August 2021 - Saturday 28 August 2021 Saturday 11 September 2021 - Saturday 2 October 2021 Saturday 16 October 2021 - Saturday 6 November 2021 Saturday 20 November 2021 - Saturday 18 December 2021, Saturday 1 January 2022 Saturday 15 January 2022 - Saturday 19 March 2022 Saturday 2 April 2022 - Saturday 7 May 2022 The position will be monitored during the season in the event that COVID-19 restrictions prevent or limit spectator attendance at matches. Why do we have blocked hours? Blocked hours have been in place for many years in and are permitted by Article 48 of the UEFA Statutes. The rationale for blocked hours includes: • To ensure spectators are not deterred from attending your matches. • In parallel to the above, protecting clubs’ revenue generated by gate receipts. • To protect the interests of football within each national association. For the avoidance of doubt, clubs are not permitted to broadcast games in the periods set out above but may record fixtures for later match analysis or highlights purposes. What are the consequences of broadcasting or live streaming matches during blocked hours? This could result in disciplinary action against a Club or individuals being a breach of UEFA Article 48.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

TUESDAY 10 AUGUST EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND REPLAY Bournemouth 3-1 Portland United

With a crowd just short of 200, Poppies overcame a tough test against their West Dorset neighbours in a physical engagement tonight writes Mike Robins. The victory added to other celebrations planned with the birthday of newly appointed Manager, Phil Brown- and his team didn’t let him down in that respect, although it was a fairly close run thing as they ended the first half. The first chance fell to the visitors with Poppies keeper, Harrison Guscott spilling a cross but the Portland attack couldn’t capitalise on the situation, the first goal did come shortly after with Conor JEVON stabbing the ball home from around 8 yards from a free kick delivered from near the dugout at the Winton End of the ground. This added impetus to the visiting side as they looked for a way back into the game and for long spells had Bournemouth on the back foot and on 24 minutes almost snatched an equaliser when Marcus Smith clipped the crossbar. Moments later a Steve Flynn header was fumbled by Josh Lucas and the ball bounced to safety off the upright before being cleared. The hosts began to get on top and with around eight minutes before the break, Bruno Manuel saw his fine strike from distance hit the bar. HT 1-0 Five minutes after the resumption, Sami Garcia did all the hard work and his delivery from the goal line was just a bit ahead of the onrushing Jevon and Portland somehow managed to clear their lines. Poppies managed to extend their lead a minute before the hour when Garcia again provided the goods picking out JEVON who fired home from wide around 12 yards out. The two goal cushion didn’t last long though. Just two minutes passed with Ben MORRIS on target from close range. Perhaps a comeback was about to happen. With both teams making full use of their substitutions the game began to lose its way, and to be fair was not a flowing game with plenty of infringements although only three yellow cards were shown, with perhaps one worthy of a more severe punishment. With 12 minutes left Bournemouth sealed a match up with old boys Lymington with Dom FALCO striking home from around 22 yards which knocked the wind out of Portland’s sails and they couldn’t find a way back. FT 3-1

TUESDAY 10 AUGUST EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND REPLAY Bashley 2-1 Calne Town This was a fiercely contested FA Cup tie that Bashley just edged writes Roger Allen. This result was particularly creditable because they played over half the game with 10 men. They started quickly and in the 2nd minute Lewis Ross had a good chance but his control let him down and Calne keeper Craig Edwards was able to collect. Shortly after Ollie Bradley had two chances which went high and wide. For Calne, Jay Walters went close but his effort was cleared off the line by a Bashley defender. The away side then had a golden chance to take the lead as a Walters’ shot rebounded off a post to Harvey Flippance but the striker was unable to control his shot which went over an open goal. Shortly after, Bashley were guilty of squandering a good chance as a fierce Ross shot rebounded from keeper Edwards to Harry Bunce but his shot was off target. Then Bradley had a shot cleared off the line by a Calne defender. On 36 minutes Bashley made the breakthrough. Ross took a free kick passing the ball inside the full back to Jack Smith whose low cross was met on the volley by Bue BENNETT who fired home. No sooner had the ink dried on the notes about the goal than Bashley were reduced to 10 as Liam Farrugia went in for a tackle which the referee considered dangerous. It looked as though it was going to be a difficult second half for the home team. HT 1-0 The second half started with a bang as Bashley won a free kick, wide left around 30 yards out. In what looked like a training ground move, an expected floated cross did not materialise, attackers took away their markers which allowed Ross to pass the ball low to BUNCE who had made a diagonal run from the opposite wing and was unchallenged as he scored -a well worked free kick. Bashley were coping well with the man disadvantage though Josh Bright had a shot well saved by home keeper Sam Thompson. On 63 minutes Calne got back into the game from the penalty spot after a striker was brought down. FLIPPANCE took the kick and scored easily. Bashley then faced a tough 10 minutes as Calne searched for the equaliser. Soon they regained their composure particularly after they substituted a tiring Bennett with Ryan Hamm. The young striker had a good evening leading the line and topped off his performance with a goal. However Hamm brought new energy to the attack and just after coming on he had a shot well saved by Edwards. Right up to the end it was typical cup football with one side pushing for an equaliser and the other trying to take advantage of the gaps that were left. Hamm had another chance to score which went begging and the final opportunity fell to Calne's Flippance but his shot sailed over. Bashley progress to meet Bracknell Town in a tie that has been switched to Bashley Road because of the unavailability of Bracknell's ground. FT 2-1

FRIDAY 13 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Fawley 1-3 Millbrook (abandoned on 87 minutes)

Sadly terminated just short of the 90 minutes when Fawley player Mike MacLeod sustained a serious head injury and an ambulance had to be called such was the seriousness. It was disappointing though to see the reaction of one or two of the visiting players that the player either could not or would not move, I was not very impressed writes Mike Robins.

A goalless first half that saw the visitors have the better of the action, despite losing right sided midfielder Sam Arnold with an injury that also required a visit to A&E fairly early in the contest. The first chance came the way of the Dockers when Mark Barker was put through by Callum Drake to see his shot fly just wide, with under ten minutes on the clock. It was Drake who was involved again around midpoint when a curling shot rebounded to safety off the crossbar. The crossbar came to the visitors’ rescue ten minutes before the break when James Clifton worked a space and his effort also hit the framework. HT 0-0 I have no idea how, but the ball simply did not find the back of the net in a flurry of activity minutes after the resumption, with the Millbrook defence living a charmed life and the keeper somehow managing to keep out a couple of chances in the same move. The opener came on 51 minutes with another curling effort from DRAKE that this time went into the far corner at the Clubroom end of the ground. Barely four minutes later it was two. This time Drake was the provider and BARKER gleefully notched from around the penalty spot. The two goal cushion didn’t last long though. A Sam Boon cross picked out Ben BOLTON who made no mistake to bring the Oilers back into the game. Millbrook restored their two goal advantage with u der 15 minutes remaining. Drake was again the danger and Fawley were unable to get the ball from him, and his ball picked out BARKER coming in from wide and his effort was well struck into the bottom corner with keeper Coombes well beaten. FT 1-3 Whether this game is replayed or the result is left to stand will be advised in due course.

FRIDAY 13 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Folland Sports 4-1 Totton & Eling Both sides won their opening game last week and a keen encounter between old adversaries was anticipated on a bright evening at Hamble writes Gary Day. Confusingly for the writer, the visitors had two Roles and a Royl playing and two of them were called Owen!! There was an early miss for both teams, Casey was off target for the home side from close in following a Manuel cross, whilst Sawyer for the Millers drove past the angle. Lycett was penalised for a handling offence and Follands had a chance from the penalty spot but Roach’s kick smacked off the crossbar. A miss like that might upset a player’s game but not in this case, in fact, it appeared to inspire him! It was Roach that provided the assist with a low cross from the right that produced a lunging far post finish for SUTHERDEN and the Planemakers went a goal ahead. The visitors responded but Newman in the home goal was handling well whilst under pressure and his opposite number Eyres had to be swift to rush out and get in a tackle on an onrushing forward following a wayward back pass. Follands applied some pressure late in the first half and it paid off with a second goal. Roach was again involved; his shot being blocked by Eyres but the loose ball ran to MANUEL who was clear to complete the formalities. A slick home move with Roach and Smith involved produced a further chance for Manuel but Eyres made a good save. That was followed by a massive scramble around the Totton & Eling goal-line, the ball eventually went in, but the referee spotted an infringement by a home player. HT 2-0. As the sun rapidly disappeared and the floodlights took over during the second half, it was Follands who increased their lead with 58 minutes played. It was a fine piece of opportunism by ROACH who latched onto a poor keeper clearance to strike a well measured chip into a gaping net. Roach had two further chances in as many minutes, but the visitors defended well to deflect them clear. The Millers got back into it when Ben Roles was clipped near to the box on the left and SAWYER spotted a poorly constructed wall to score direct into the near corner. But the Follands three-goal margin was restored by ROACH once more, a neat dribble across the edge of the box and a well struck 20-yard deflected shot. Late opportunities came to Ben Roles for the visitors and Casey for Follands but both efforts cleared the crossbar. FT 4-1. It was a well contested game and a fair result on the evening. Follands were the more fluent with Roach at the heart of their moves. Sunday, 15 August 2021 Page 15 of 26

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Three FA Cup replays and one Premier Division fixture in midweek with the replays seeing two more Wessex League sides in to the next round. Bashley achieved a creditable 2-1 win over Calne Town after having to play with ten men for over half the game. Bue Bennett and Harry Bunce put the home side ahead and a late penalty proved only a consolation for the visitors. Bournemouth and Portland shared four goals on Saturday but the replay at Victoria Park went very much the way of the Poppies with two goals from Conor Jevon and one from Dom Falco more than cancelling out Ben Morris’s strike for the Blues. Andover New Street gained a deserved draw at Shepton Mallet to earn the replay but lacking one or two of their experienced players they never recovered from conceding a goal in the second minute and eventually went down by four goals to nil. The Premier Division fixture was a repeat of the Cup tie at Amesbury three days earlier when Shaftesbury won by four goals to one. Amesbury became the visitors on Tuesday and suffered from perhaps a show of intent for the season from the home side who ran out winners by nine goals to two. There was a hat trick for Asa Phillips, two goals each for Cameron Beard and Luke Delaney plus singles from Mickey Finch and Gary Bowles with Lukas Burt and Scott Hassell on the mark for the visitors.

CLUB NEWS

Clubs are advised that the sponsorship arrangement at Hamworthy United has ended so please do not use “Specsavers” in relation to the County Ground in any media post or published literature going forwards.

Clubs visiting the Waterside are advised of ongoing works on the A326 in particular in the Applemore and Hardley sections, do allow extra travel time if using this road. Talking about roadworks, we are also aware of some overnight road closures on the M27 from 21:00 to 06:00 Monday to Friday only on the following dates- 23 August to 21 September (Junctions 11 to 12 eastbound) – but not the bank holiday weekend. Then 21 September to 19 October (Junctions 12 to 11 westbound). During the closures, a signed diversion will be in place via the A27.

The League have been in touch with the Hampshire FA after a couple of clubs asked about discount travel for games on the Isle of Wight. We are pleased to inform you that a discount is available via the Hampshire FA, and applies to Wessex League Clubs, from both operators, Wightlink and Red Funnel. Clubs will have been forwarded the relevant Red Funnel codes plus an information sheet for bookings with Wightlink.

We have had this come in from Brockenhurst all clubs are asked to make sure they pass this information on to their players, management and supporters alike. Unfortunately the overflow car park in the office block next door to the ground is no longer available to them on match days. This means the car parking has been cut in half from about 60 spaces to about 30 and also means the current car park will not be able to accept any spectators. Even then with only availability open to officials, players and sponsors it will still be difficult to fit in everyone. They would therefore ask if possible that visiting officials and players double up, treble up or more in their vehicles. If not there is the likely possibility that they will have to use the central car park and walk back round to the main gate. In any event spectators will need to park there or find suitable on-street parking at the moment. That car park is free after 18:00 during the week but there is a charge at weekends for games with a 15:00 kick off. Apologies for any inconvenience caused, but as you will understand this situation was suddenly thrust on us and is beyond our control. Whilst at Grigg lane, we hear that Matt Sheedy collected an award for his 100th Badgers appearance at the weekend.

AN UPDATE ON PLAYER REGISTRATION

Message received during the week from the FA as regards the Whole Game System which has been forwarded to our member clubs. “Firstly we want to acknowledge and apologise for the challenges that you and colleagues may have faced in recent weeks with registering players for the 2021/22 season. Whilst for the majority our new system is proving to be faster and more stable, we know that for a proportion of our customers there have unfortunately been issues that have prevented registrations happening. Please rest assured that The FA’s Digital Technology and Grassroots divisions are working flat out and doing everything within our power to find resolutions to these issues. We have been working hard to replace the player registration functionality that our legacy Whole Game System has previously provided, knowing that this no longer has the capacity, speed or functionality to meet the current needs across the game. There was a robust process to scope, design and build the new player registration approach, which is currently supporting up to 35,000 registrations a day, but there have been some underlying technical challenges. We have made progress resolving two key issues. One related to some users facing an issue where the system is not correctly recognising that a parent/carer is linked to a player. We’ve resolved bugs related to incorrect error messages and the system flagging missing data that is actually available. We are working on the remaining ones. The other was with the page freezing when adding a new photo, which is now fixed. Our teams are continuing to work round the clock to fix issues. We share your frustrations that the new system has not yet performed as we’d all hoped and planned, and thank our critical grassroots workforce and volunteers across the game for their continued patience. We’ll continue doing all we can to address these technical issues as immediately as possible, whilst keeping you updated on our progress”

AN ILLUMINATING EXPERIENCE

A year ago clubs completed the Ground Grading Inspection – Club Questionnaire form, it is not the intension to have these forms completed again but we would ask that the Ground Grading Officer is informed of any changes that have been made to grounds such as pitch dimensions, dressing room sizes and playing surface from grass to 3G football turf. Due to Covid restrictions, no ground grading inspections were carried out last season, we are now starting to resume the inspections by the ground grading teams across the League. The inspections will be carried out over the next few months so clubs are requested to please ensure their grounds are fully compliant with The FA’s Ground Grading requirements for Wessex Premier Division “F” grade and Wessex Division 1 “G” grade. The FA’s Ground Grading criteria can be found on the Wessex League website under information / Ground Grading or at www.thefa.com/get-involved/player/ground-grading Floodlight testing as per the National Ground Grading – Category F and G, floodlights must be provided of at least 120 Lux with 25% uniformity and tested every 2 years. With lockdown and Covid restrictions we currently have a backlog of testing and intend to start testing again late in September. Tests will be carried out by the Leagues nominated contractor RJC Mechanical Services Ltd. and we strongly recommend that your floodlights are checked with all lamps working and lens’ are cleaned beforehand to help prevent any costly retests being necessary. The following clubs (arranged alphabetically) are due to have the floodlights tested by the year end. Testing will take place on Thursday evenings and those listed are requested to notify the Ground Grading Officer if this would be a problem.

THE EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND OF THE EMIRATES FA CUP – A BACKWARD GLANCE

With the three completed replays in midweek the above round is all over as far as the Wessex league is concerned with eleven Clubs through to the next round, which sadly will feature three all-Wessex ties writes John Gorman. The completed Round included ten scores of six or over, saw victories for two of the Clubs who left us over the close season- the third, Tadley Calleva lost to Baffins; and also the following result:- Athersley Recreation 1 Campion 4 On the goalscoring front Fareham finished second overall in the following list:- 8 Fareham Town 7 Saffron Walden, Bradford Town – both away from home 6 Barnoldswick Town, Winterton Rangers, Bishop Cleeve, Littlehampton, Newhaven But topping the lot, in their first ever game in the Competition, were JERSEY BULLS who defeated Horsham YMCA by TEN goals to one. The game was played in Jersey and is the southernmost tie played in the history of the Competition. Two decent achievements to mark your entry in to the most famous Club Competition in the world. Incidentally Barnoldswick Town play in the North West Counties League and Winterton Rangers in the Northern Counties East. Returning to our previous Clubs mentioned above, Fleet Town made the long haul to Bridport – a longer journey than any they would have encountered in the Wessex League – and won 2-1 whilst Lymington Town won by the same margin at Larkhall, near Bath, a Club with a wonderfully scenic ground who they will meet again in the Southern League as the season progresses. Finally, what was unusual about Athersley Recreation losing 4-1 at home to Campion FC? Nothing really other than I have never heard of either Club. There will be many reading this (hopefully) whose knowledge is far better than mine but if you knew they came from Barnsley and Bradford respectively you are doing very well. What will the next Round throw up?

SATURDAY MATCH REPORTS

SATURDAY 14 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Andover New Street 5-3 Infinity One tries to avoid cliches in writing these reports – not always successfully – but sometimes the cliché fits the bill and that was the case at Charlton today when all present were probably thinking at some stage that football is a funny game, In brief terms the visitors had far the better of the opening half, led immediately after the break and then conceded four goals inside 20 minutes and saw the game taken away from them – and few would have prophesied such an outcome at halftime writes John Gorman. Street started the brighter with Lloyd Thompson having one cross blocked and a second claimed by the keeper before the visitors’ Andrew Powell saw a shot saved at close range by keeper Chris Wing. The tall and quick Junior Kamara was to prove a constant source of trouble on the Infinity left flank and won a corner after outpacing two defenders before having a shot saved by Wing who also saved well from Danny Phillips. On the twenty minute mark Kamara sent Phillips through and the challenge from behind surely suggested a

Sunday, 15 August 2021 Page 19 of 26 card , possibly red, from the referee but he settled for a free kick on the edge of the “D” with his cards staying in his pocket. Infinity will probably feel justice was done when Callum PARKER curled the free kick over the wall and under the angle of post and bar to give his side a deserved lead. Luke Hooper, looking offside, was halted by a well-timed tackle from Josh Cripps before New Street suffered a similar strange decision at the other end. Ross Cook went down under a challenge in the area, the whistle blew and Infinity were awarded a free kick. Presumably Cook was adjudged to have dived but there was no admonishment of any sort from the official. A free kick from the same player was narrowly wide and another Kamara run won a free kick at the other end which was deflected off the wall for a corner. With the 45 minutes virtually up keeper Tom Boyce turned a shot from full back Lee Morris over the bar before HOOPER broke away again, there was no flag and the clinical finish sent the sides in level at the break with New Street perhaps more than a little fortunate. HT 1-1 It took just two minutes after the restart for the visitors to restore their lead as Harry OSMAN was allowed to turn in the area and his shot hit the inside of the post, rebounded along the goal line, and hit the other post before finding the back of the net. This time it took Street less than two minutes to level the scores after being awarded a soft looking free kick on the left. Morris chipped the ball in and Shane LOCK, far from the tallest player in the area, headed home at the far post. Within another four minutes they were ahead as COOK sent Danny Field away on the right and then converted the cross after the defence failed to clear. Two more goals followed in the eighteenth and twentieth minutes. Firstly the keeper made a hash of collecting a through ball and after some pinball in the area HOOPER made it four and he completed his hat trick when the defence left the keeper stranded and he lobbed the ball in to the unguarded net. Infinity’s Josh Oxlade collected the only caution of the afternoon before the visitors claimed a third as substitute Jamie WHITE converted a left wing cross from close range. Both sides kept going to the end with a number of players suffering from cramp, and Cook was unlucky when he tried his luck from just in front of the dugout and was inches wide with the keeper not even in his penalty area before the statutory seven minutes of added time passed without any further happenings. FT 5-3 A strange game in many ways with Infinity very much on top at the break and their attacking prowess – they lost Kamara to injury before the end – will worry a few defences but defensively they struggled on the day in the heart of their defence. Street owed a lot to goalkeeper Wing in the first half, there was an impressive performance from young Lee Morris and Lock excelled in a slightly withdrawn central role after the break. Good to see only one yellow card but there were some strange decisions and offside at one end was something of a lottery throughout, with the Assistant’s relationship with the last defender somewhat distant at times. But an enjoyable afternoon and tonic for Street after their midweek Cup defeat and before the local derby at the Portway on Tuesday.

SATURDAY 14 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Ringwood Town 1-6 Downton Groundsman Pete Alvis has worked wonders with the pitch at Long Lane over the years and again today was no exception, a carpet to play on but alas, the hosts were undone by their Wiltshire visitors with some clinical finishing in a game that was not as free flowing as the score suggests with plenty of stoppages for one thing or another writes Mike Robins. I was kind of expecting a close run game, but for long spells it seemed likely that the Robins could almost score at will. They started the ball rolling so to speak in the fourth minute. A Sam Howe free kick saw Marcel LAPTAS have time to bring the ball under control and net into the bottom far corner at the Allotments end of the ground. Seven minutes later the lead was doubled. A clumsy challenge that perhaps could have warranted something more than yellow in colour was rewarded with HOWE sending a fine free kick into the top corner leaving keeper Ed Kitcher rooted to his line. An unmarked James MATTHEWS was able to pull one back for the hosts on 17 minutes (the picture below taken seconds before the ball hit the net)

Sunday, 15 August 2021 Page 20 of 26

There were more chances at either end in the second part of the first half and it was soon a third for the Robins. Paul GULLIVER found himself with time to slot the ball home to restore the two goal cushion eight minutes before the break and at the other end Harrison Fay could probably have done better with a wasted free kick. HT 1-3 The second half was much in the same vein as the first. The visitors increased their lead just after the hour, when Laptas gain had time to bring the ball down from a deep cross and crashed it home from six yards to make it 1-4. Twenty minutes to go, and Kitcher misjudged a low cross and Josh CUMMINGS was on hand with a tap in to rub salt into the wounds. Ben Harris then had an effort from distance to gain some consolation for the hosts, but was perhaps unlucky to see it just drift wide of the mark. The game had long been won when on 83 minutes Tom MOSELEY made it six, at the second attempt after Kitcher was unable to hold the original strike. FT 1-6 A rather surprising result between these two near neighbours, on a hot afternoon. Did I mention what a great surface the players had to play on, well I have now.

SATURDAY 14 AUGUST PREMIER DIVISION Hamble Club 1-1 Shaftesbury Shaftesbury have made a promising start with a new team under a new regime but this was to be their sternest test of the season so far. Hamble matched them stride for stride and in the end a draw was a fair result writes Roger Allen. The visitors had the first chance when a cross shot by Luke Delaney was palmed wide by Jack Martin, the Hamble keeper. The game was end to end with neither side able to gain the ascendancy. The next major chance fell to Shaftesbury on the quarter hour when a cross shot by Jordan Foot went wide. Hamble's first real chance came after 20 minutes when Filippos Terzidis was both high and wide with a long range effort and a similar fate befell an Ash Pope shot moments later. Chances were few and far between but, just when it looked as though the first half would finish goalless, Hamble took the lead. It came from a move down the right which culminated in Lewis Nagle providing a low cross for Barry MASON to sweep home from 6 yards. (see photo below) HT 1-0 Despite half time intervening there was only 4 minutes playing time between the two goals as Shaftesbury equalised a minute into the second half. It started with a miscued clearance by a Hamble defender that went for a corner. The kick should have been cleared but it found its way through to FOOT who, despite his name, headed home at the far post. At this stage Shaftesbury had penned Hamble in and Asa Phillips sent a long range shot towards the top corner only for Martin to pull off a spectacular save. Shortly after the same player was wide with a shot. After around 10 minutes of Shaftesbury pressure, Hamble broke out and were unlucky not to take the lead. The driving force behind much of their attacking play, Ryan Wilkins, hit the underside of the bar with the ball being scrambled to safety. Sunday, 15 August 2021 Page 21 of 26

The best chance during the remainder of the game was set up by Hamble's Sammy Woodward who, after some good work, played in Mason who shot over from a good position. The match had been very competitive but was generally played in a good spirit. However in the 2nd minute of stoppage time, frustrations boiled over in front of the dug outs which resulted in Prince McLean of Hamble being sent off for violent conduct and Mickey Finch of Shaftesbury being yellow carded. It was a sad end to what had been an enjoyable game. FT 1-1

SATURDAY 14 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Laverstock & Ford 6-1 Fleet Spurs It was a beautiful day in Wiltshire, but not for Spurs, who suffered another heavy defeat against a side that played much better football on the day writes John Porter. The opening minutes were evenly fought, but Laverstock soon established a stranglehold on the game, moving quicker to any loose balls than the visitors and keeping the possession that they gained much better. Less than 10 minutes into the game, a Fleet defender committed a foul on the edge of penalty area and Lewis WAKEFORD curled a well-placed shot past teenage keeper Jack Coleman and into the corner of the net. The Bulldogs continued to be well on top and Spurs threatened on only one occasion, when Ryan Goddard ran more than half the length of the pitch before being crowded out by the home defence. Normal service was soon resumed, and only stout defence from Spurs and some excellent saves from Coleman kept the margin at one goal. When was the next goal coming? Surely it must be soon. Well it did come in the 30th minute, but in a very unexpected manner. Wave after wave of Laverstock attacks had foundered, but to the amazement of all, it was Spurs who scored, after a very slick move. On one of the visitors’ rare breakaways, Jayden Dalton ran on to a clever backheel from Shane Gibson, produced an instant low cross and there was skipper Tom WHITE to sweep the ball home with a first-time shot past Alexis Aguer. The crowd was dumbfounded that the scores were equal. Heartened by their first league goal of the season, Spurs came more into the game, although Laverstock still had the lion’s share of the possession. Indeed the Bulldogs had the ball in the net twice before half-time, on each occasion being denied for infringements, and the score line remained an unlikely 1-1 at the interval. HT 1-1 After the break, the visitors set up a couple of promising attacks that came to nothing, and they were beginning to wonder if a miracle could happen. But no, this was a real football game, not a Roy of the Rovers fantasy or a fairy story, and 13 minutes into the half, Dale Small brought Wakeford down in the box. Penalty. Archie LOVEGROVE made no mistake from the spot. Five minutes later, Spurs were unable to clear their lines and Russell JONES swivelled on the ball and sent a powerful shot past Coleman’s left hand and into the top corner. Although there was still almost half an hour to play, the game was now effectively over. Before the end there were three more goals for the hosts. Two were from shots - by Jordon MATTHEWS and JONES, his second of the game – and the third from a close-range header from sub James McSORLEY. The final scoreline reflected fairly the game as a whole. FT 6-1 This was a good win for Laverstock, particularly welcome after their defeat at New Milton the previous Saturday. Spurs were pleased to have notched a goal, but their search for the improvement they will need, if they are to develop as they hope, is at an early stage. They have two away games in the next week. On Tuesday they are at Petersfield Town and their Saturday visit is to Andover New Street. These are clubs that Fleet know well, having had good games against both, some won and some lost. All three clubs doubtless look forward to both games with optimism.

SATURDAY 14 AUGUST DIVISION ONE Petersfield Town 1-4 Newport IOW On a delightful sunny afternoon at Love Lane, the Rams did battle with the Port for Wessex Division 1 points. Newport, now decamped from East Cowes to Smallbrook, had won their opening game 4-1 against Romsey whilst Petersfield were looking for their first points having lost 3-2 at Totton & Eling writes Gary Day.

Sunday, 15 August 2021 Page 22 of 26

The Island side started like an express train as a lovely passing move with Craig, Butcher and Kelly involved produced a chance for Reynolds that had to be beaten out by Jackson and then Kelly drove wide, all in the opening minute of the game! Newport continued with this good start and eventually took the lead when Burford put in a great cross from the right to the back stick where REYNOLDS sent a firm far post header across the keeper and into the corner, an excellent and deserved goal. Jackson did well to block a Kelly shot with his legs. Not much was seen of the Rams in offensive areas but a low Bourton cross to the near post went to Newbury but Pearce defended tightly to block his effort and concede a corner. Now, there was a drinks’ break in each half and it was duly noted that Port keeper Streeter didn’t join in with the first half one as it appeared as though he was enjoying standing in the only shady part of the pitch which was inside his own six yard box (and who could blame him!). Now refreshed and perhaps with a few advisory words received too, the Rams equalised soon after when Kennedy’s pass found NEWBURY who won a challenge with a defender and neatly placed the ball past Streeter. The lead didn’t last long though as Browne found Reynolds and his low ball into the box received a first-time touch from close range by CRAIG. At the end of the half, a low Newbury cross into the box just evaded Andrew-Knott in the middle which could have tied it up at half-time. HT 1-2. Newport started the second half well and scored within two minutes as a pinpoint Butcher cross was headed in from close in by BROWNE. They threatened again but Burford drove over. The Rams fared better from there and created a few opportunities. In one of their moves, Carter found Andrew-Knott who laid it on to Newbury whose angled shot went past the far post and later Carter’s distant free-kick tested Streeter. Orepo was introduced from the Bench for Town and he injected some more energy into their play down the left. Browne’s shot was deflected wide by a home defender and Kelly fired wide late on. There was still time for a further Port goal in stoppage time when Kelly sprinted clear of the home defensive line and his shot came off the inside of the post and fell to CRAIG who was left with the freedom of Love Lane, to finish. FT 1-4. Newport, a strong outfit, were deserved winners. Town had a bad start to both halves but did show some promise. This was particularly the case for sub Orepo who was adjudged their sponsor’s player-of-the-match although Andrew-Knott on his debut would have been a candidate too.

SATURDAY ROUND UP

A full League programme was scheduled for the weekend – two games were played on Friday – but in the event two matches were postponed and two were abandoned. In the Premier Division AFC Stoneham finished with honours even after a one all draw - Josh Gilpin and Lee Francis the respective scorers - and there was just a single goal at Alton, Rob Carr giving the home side all three points against Christchurch. Bournemouth had enjoyed a good start to the season but conceded four at home to Baffins Milton Rovers without reply, goals from Billy Connor, Tommy Scutt, James Cowan and an own goal for the Portsmouth side. Brockenhurst proved too strong for Cowes with Silvano Obeng (2) and Bourhane Ben Maatoug on target while Fareham were bought down to earth after their eight goal spree last week as Bashley won 3-1 at Cams Alders with two goals from Ryan Hamm and one from Ron Frost outweighing the consolation goal from Kai Sterne. Shaftesbury also found things different today as they shared the points in a one all draw at Hamble Club, four days after scoring nine against Amesbury. Barry Mason and Jordan Foot on the scoresheet. Hythe & Dibden’s tough introduction to life at the higher level continued with a 4-0 home defeat by Portland, the Dorset side’s first win of the campaign. Josh Leake (2), Ryan McKechnie and Joel Hewitt on the mark and Hythe have now conceded fifteen goals in three matches, all at home. The last game was at Moneyfields and a close fought encounter ended with a best of three win for the home side with James Franklyn scoring twice against a lone goal from Luke Gray for Blackfield & Langley. In Division One on Friday evening Follands proved too strong for old rivals Totton & Eling running out as 4-1 winners at Hamble Park, Clayd Roach with two, Joe Sutherden and Fabio Manuel for the Planemakers with Alex Sawyer claiming the Millers’ goal. At Fawley the game against Millbrook was abandoned in the last three minutes after a serious injury to the home side’s Mike McLeod and all wish him a speedy recovery. Much praise was expressed over the actions of the physios on the evening and it shows again the importance of having experienced people in that role.

New Milton followed up their opening day win with three more points, Jack Dacombe and George Deem giving them a 2-0 victory at Ash United, and there were plenty of goals at Andover New Street. Strikes from Luke Hooper and Callum Parker made it all square at the break but in the second half Hooper completed his hat trick to add to goals from Shane Lock and Ross Cook while goals at the other end from Harry Osman and Jamie White left the final score as five three in Street’s favour. Goals also at Laverstock & Ford with the home side overwhelming Fleet Spurs 6-1. Russell Jones with two, Archie Lovegrove, James McSorley, Lewis Wakefield and Jordon Matthews with the six; Tom White for the visitors. Newport look as though they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season as they completed a 4-1 win at Petersfield. Bailey Newbury notched the lone home goal whilst Joe Craig with two, Jacob Reynolds and Jordan Browne made it a happy ride home for the Islanders. Downton were also six shooters on the day at Ringwood with the home side managing a single James Matthews goal in reply. The Robins scorers were Marcel Laptas(2), Paul Gulliver, Sam Howe, Josh Cummings and Tom Moseley. The Romsey versus Bemerton game was switched to Western Way where two goals from Eddie Perrett and one from Justin Bennett more than cancelled out a goal for Romsey – sadly the scorer is unknown. Verwood now proudly top the table on goal difference after adding four against visitors Whitchurch to the five they scored last week. Ollie Davies scored two with Nathan Gray and Matt Vining notching the others and George Bishop getting the Jamboys consolation. Confusion at Beatrice Avenue where East Cowes Vics and Andover were drawing 3-3 in second half stoppage time when the visitors Jordan Smith collapsed on the pitch causing a lengthy delay and the eventual apparent abandonment of the game though neither side seems too sure if that was the outcome (Ed- I am amazed that it took over six hours for official written notification of the abandonment to be provided). Jimmi Burton, Harri Catania and Toby Snow scored for the Vics with Josh Bertie getting two of the Andover goals, Something for the League to decide upon but the main thing is that the Andover player makes a rapid and full recovery. Reverting to the Premier Division the games at Alresford and Horndean were postponed for Covid related reasons and there could me more such postponements which will have to be closely monitored by the League. Finally can we please ask again that all attendances and scorers be reported week by week.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

With other leagues now under way, it’s time to reinstate this section within the Newsletter, first though we see that the Dorset Premier League have announced that Jewson Builders Merchants are the Leagues new main sponsor for the season. They kicked off their arrangement with their opening fixtures this weekend and there were 41 goals knocked in. Eight games provided away wins. Bournemouth Sports were the high scores, hitting six at Bridport Reserves. Swanage Town & Herston, Sherborne Town Reserves and Merley Cobham Sports all found the net five times in their wins at Shaftesbury Reserves, Corfe Castle and Hamworthy United Reserves respectively. Hamworthy Recreation travelled to the Purbecks to face Wareham Rangers bagging the points in a 3-0 win, Blandford United won by the odd goal of five at Balti Sports whilst Dorchester Sports went to Petersham Lane tasted success at Holt United by the best of three. Sturminster Newton United’s long trip to face Portland United Reserves, proved worthwhile, winning 3-1. The sole home win saw Westland Sports defeat returning members Poole Borough 2-0. In the Hampshire Premier League, most sides in the Senior Division have played four times, the Division 1 North Hants, and South East divisions get under way on 4 September. Moneyfields Reserves top the table with four wins and a +10 goal difference. Stockbridge are just two points adrift- dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Fleetlands yesterday. Liphook United and Sway are just a further point behind from their four outings. Lyndhurst and Clanfield prop up the rest and are yet to break their duck. Big winners yesterday were Locks Heath who rattled in seven at Lyndhurst, Ben Chambers netting four and the top six of the Senior Division looks like this this morning.

Looking up so to speak, Lymington Town began their “Pitching In” Southern League campaign with a 3-1 win at Barnstaple Town- Dominic Thelen with a double in the last six minutes adding to one from Craig Stanley. Winchester City needed a 90+6 minute equaliser to share the points and four goals with visitors Bideford whilst AFC Totton won 1-0 over new boys Plymouth Parkway, Jack Hoey with the goal. There were 126 at Mangotsfield United where a Conor Whiteley brace secured a 2-0 win for Sholing. Meanwhile in the Premier Division, there were 429 in at Privett Park to witness Gosport Borough win a best of seven tussle with Poole Town, and Salisbury shared the spoils at Metropolitan Police where it ended goalless. There was a crowd of 595 at New Cuthbury, where Wimborne Town entertained Taunton Town. Sadly for the Magpies it looks like the majority of those went home disappointed as the Peacocks won 4-1. Finally, in the National League, Eastleigh’s campaign starts on 28 August when Wrexham are the visitors.

Good luck to all our former members in their respective campaigns this term.

THE LAST WORDS

A number of Clubs have received a reminder email because they are still to complete the requested audit from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. The deadline for completion has been extended until 22nd August 2021, and if they still do not complete the audit, they will not be eligible to apply for ground improvement grants from the Football Foundation. Please do so as it is for your own good to do so!

Clubs are also strongly advised that shirt numbers are strictly adhered to after handing in their team sheets. This includes substitutes. We have had a number of occasions already this season when a player comes on with a different shirt number to that written. Please ensure that this is complied with immediately. Rule 7.4 applies-“The Players’ shirts must be clearly numbered in accordance with the Team Sheet handed to the match referee before a match and there must be no change of numbers during the match except for a change of goalkeeper or if permitted by the match referee because of a blood injury”.

For the sake of clarity as regards hospitality, clubs are reminded of the following League Directive. Hot or cold drinks will be provided at half time for players and match officials as requested, and refreshments will be provided for invited guests. After the match hot or cold drinks and solid refreshments shall be provided in the club house or an areas set aside for the purpose of entertaining visiting players, match officials and guests. Any teams and match officials travelling long distances should have a hot or cold drink on arrival if requested. Clubs are strongly advised to comply with this and the other Directives that are on our website.

And finally and to answer a number of queries raised prior to or at the weekend, “Covid-19 regulations are, at present, as per the Governments regulations, subject to change from the 16th of August. If a person is notified by the NHS app, that they have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive, then they are required to isolate. The following criteria must be met in order for a Club to request the postponement of a match due to COVID- 19 related player eligibility issues:- a. A Club must have fewer than 14 players available who are not ineligible due to COVID-19 in accordance with Competition Rule 34; b. A Club must provide to The League all relevant details as evidence to substantiate any request for a postponement due to COVID-19 (e.g. a list of all registered players, together with evidence demonstrating which of those players have tested positive for, or are required to self-isolate because of, COVID-19); and c. Any request for a postponement must be received by The League (including all relevant evidence to substantiate the request) at least four hours prior to the scheduled commencement of a match. If permission to postpone is given the match will be rearranged. Failure to comply with the above procedure will result in the club being, at least, charged with an unfulfilled fixture.”

We go again next week with a return to Emirates FA Cup action for a number of our teams, good luck!
