GO ALONG AND CHECK OUT INDIGENOUS HISTORY EXHIBITIONS: “I heard it on the radio”: 25 years of 98.9FM Murri Country

Protest in the air, a fresh voice on the airwaves; the first Indigenous radio station in a capital city began broadcasting in the 1990s… bringing an exciting new sound to our stereos.

‘I heard it on the radio’ looks at 25 years of 98.9FM Murri Country and its influence in giving a voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the radio.

From their genesis in the protest movement, 98.9FM’s significant contribution to Australian media was a catalyst for change. Through newly commissioned digital stories, never-before-seen photographs, histori- cal documents and radio station ephemera, learn more about the people, the music and the power of self- representation.

In this free State Library of showcase, experience a recreation of a vintage 98.9FM recording studio and enjoy the sounds of Country as you explore the history of this transformative community radio station. #slq989FM Contact event organiser - Contact Email [email protected]

PLANTATION VOICES Emerging from the sugarcane farms of tropical Queensland to cut a path to freedom, the stories of Australian South Sea Islanders are steeped in strength and resilience.

Through never-before-seen original photographs, rare and restricted historical papers, and newly commissioned art- works, Plantation Voices repatriates the living history of the unknown names and faces of people tricked or kidnapped into servitude as cheap labour in Queensland’s cane fields.

More than 150 years later, the exhibition also charts the pathways of descendants in reclaiming their lost past and forging their identities into the future.

Through this free exhibition, State Library’s heritage collections give voice to the untold sto- ries of a community that played a vital role in the shaping of our nation and fought so fiercely to call Australia home.

Find out more about the exhibition and learn more about Australian South sea Islander identity, culture and heritage on the Australian South Sea Islander blog. Curator’s sours will offer insights and behind-the-scenes information not normally accessible to the public. Come along hear the real secrets behind this exhibition. Free curator’s tours of Plantation Voices: Contemporary conversations with Australian South Sea Islanders occur on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 11 a.m. until 8 September, 2019.

QUEENSLANDS REDS VS (Argentina)JAGUARES: Super Rugby -1st June, 2019, Suncorp Stadium

I would like to say thank you to all people involved with helping our kids enjoy and play at the Reds game at Suncorp last Saturday night. Uncle Shane drove us and Uncle Jeff helped with on field action with kids. During the half-time break, our students played on field against teams from Hymba Yum- ba. Thank you to all families who also contributed to the night. Team 1 won 3 -0 while Team 2 lost 2-1. Kids were well behaved and had fun. Thank you again for your help.
