But the Panthers haven’t missed a beat in the opening 11 rounds of the 2021 Telstra Premiership suggesting there has been no grand final hangover. Second-rower Viliame Kikau said the reason for their carefree style of play was due to the environment created by the players. There are no egos. “If you’re the highest paid player or the lowest paid player, everyone treats each other the same,” Kikau said. “We have mutual respect for everyone and that’s the kind of culture we’re trying to build in this club and it shows in how we play. “Everyone respects each other and everyone wants to work for each other.” Ruthless is often an adjective used to describe the Panthers performances on game day, but that is the 4 | LEAGUEUNLIMITED.COM | THE FRONT ROW | VOL 2 ISSUE 12 STORY BY PAUL JOBBER IMAGE PANTHERS MEDIA result of everyone buying in to what they want to achieve. “One of the main things that the coaching staff brought up was being ruthless not just when game day comes, but being ruthless in our preparation as well in how we train and how we present ourselves around here,” Kikau said. “Come game day it’s second nature to us so we go out there and do it.” The Panthers toughest challenge appears likely to come in the form of the Origin period in the next few months after they were largely unaffected in 2020. But Kikau is confident their ‘next man up’ policy will reap the rewards. “It’s going to show how resilient this club is because we’ve always had that next man up mentality,” he said. “We lost some of our big players in the first few games, but the boys who took their place came in and gelled straight away. “They’ve done the job.” One player who could feature in the Origin discussion is centre Matt Burton who has been a revelation so far this season. Kikau has no doubt he has what it takes should Brad Fittler need him to do a job for the Blues. “Burto is a natural footballer,” he said. “He’s the type of player that comes into a team and does the job so it’s a matter of time for him to get that mention of playing rep games.” LEAGUEUNLIMITED.COM | THE FRONT ROW | VOL 2 ISSUE 12 | 5 PREMIERSHIP LADDER 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership after Round 11 Overall Home Away Pos Team P W L D F A PD Pts P W L D F A PD P W L D F A PD 1 Penrith 11 11 0 - 364 84 280 22 6 6 0 - 166 42 124 5 5 0 - 198 42 156 2 Melbourne 11 9 2 - 370 136 234 18 6 6 0 - 212 80 132 5 3 2 - 158 56 102 3 Parramatta 11 9 2 - 300 170 130 18 6 4 2 - 139 94 45 5 5 0 - 161 76 85 4 South Sydney 11 8 3 - 279 252 27 16 5 3 2 - 91 142 -51 6 5 1 - 188 110 78 5 Sydney 11 7 4 - 300 181 119 14 6 5 1 - 184 94 90 5 2 3 - 116 87 29 6 Manly Warringah 11 6 5 - 255 246 9 12 5 3 2 - 142 110 32 6 3 3 - 113 136 -23 7 St George Illawarra 11 5 6 - 223 226 -3 10 5 2 3 - 110 92 18 6 3 3 - 113 134 -21 8 Gold Coast Titans 11 5 6 - 260 287 -27 10 6 3 3 - 146 160 -14 5 2 3 - 114 127 -13 9 Warriors 11 5 6 - 237 276 -39 10 6 3 3 - 119 119 0 5 2 3 - 118 157 -39 10 North Queensland 11 5 6 - 217 305 -88 10 6 4 2 - 137 149 -12 5 1 4 - 80 156 -76 11 Canberra 11 4 7 - 203 261 -58 8 6 1 5 - 117 173 -56 5 3 2 - 86 88 -2 12 Newcastle 11 4 7 - 199 292 -93 8 5 2 3 - 95 122 -27 6 2 4 - 104 170 -66 13 Cronulla 11 3 8 - 195 270 -75 6 5 2 3 - 105 84 21 6 1 5 - 90 186 -96 14 Wests Tigers 11 3 8 - 220 310 -90 6 6 1 5 - 128 204 -76 5 2 3 - 92 106 -14 15 Brisbane 11 3 8 - 180 306 -126 6 4 2 2 - 88 72 16 7 1 6 - 92 234 -142 16 Canterbury 11 1 10 - 130 330 -200 2 5 0 5 - 46 170 -124 6 1 5 - 84 160 -76 STATS LEADERS LEAGUEUNLIMITED NRL 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership after Round 11 Top Pointscorers PLAYER OF THE YEAR Rank Player Team Position(s) P T G FG Pts 21 points - Nathan Cleary (Panthers) 13 points - Will Kennedy (Sharks), Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (Warriors) 1 Nathan CLEARY Penrith Halfback 10 7 55 1 140 12 points - Clinton Gutherson (Eels), David Fifita (Titans) 2 Reuben GARRICK Manly Wing 11 7 38 - 104 11 points - Adam Doueihi (Wests Tigers), Tom Trbojevic (Sea Eagles); 10 points - Scott Adam REYNOLDS Souths Halfback 10 3 44 2 104 Drinkwater (Cowboys), Cody Walker (Rabbitohs), Ben Hunt (Dragons); 9 points - 4 Adam DOUEIHI Wests Tigers Centre, 5/8th 10 5 32 - 84 Jarome Luai (Panthers), Alexander Brimson (Titans), Sam Walker (Roosters); 8 points - Nicholas Hynes (Storm), George Williams (Raiders), Jahrome Hughes (Storm), Jamal FOGARTY Gold Coast Halfback 11 1 40 - 84 James Tedesco (Roosters), Reed Mahoney (Eels), Ryan Papenhuyzen (Storm), Mitchell Kodi NIKORIMA Warriors 5/8th, Halfback 11 3 36 - 84 Moses (Eels); 7 points - Adam Reynolds (Rabbitohs), Daine Laurie (Wests Tigers), 7 Ryan PAPENHUYZEN Melbourne Fullback 6 8 24 - 80 Cameron Munster (Storm), Daly Cherry-Evans (Sea Eagles), Isaiah Papali'i (Eels); 6 points - Brian To'o (Panthers), Latrell Mitchell (Rabbitohs), Damien Cook (Rabbitohs), 8 Mitchell MOSES Parramatta Halfback 11 - 38 2 78 Jamayne Isaako (Broncos), Christian Welch (Storm), Tevita Pangai Junior (Broncos), 9 Jamayne ISAAKO Brisbane Fullback 11 5 28 - 76 Harry Grant (Storm), James Fisher-Harris (Panthers), Kalyn Ponga (Knights); 5 points 10 Valentine HOLMES North Qld Fullback, Wing 11 3 30 1 73 - Luke Keary (Roosters), Reece Walsh (Warriors), Brett Morris (Roosters), Valentine Holmes (Cowboys), Josh Addo-Carr (Storm), Chad Townsend (Sharks), Viliame Kikau (Panthers); 4 points - Toby Rudolf (Sharks), Tohu Harris (Warriors), Kodi Nikorima Top Tryscorers (Warriors), Tyrone Peachey (Titans), Jayden Brailey (Knights), Maika Sivo (Eels), Tui Rank Player Team Position(s) P T Kamikamica (Storm), Matthew Dufty (Dragons), Payne Haas (Broncos), Isaah Yeo (Panthers), Luke Brooks (Wests Tigers), Benji Marshall (Rabbitohs); 3 points - Tino 1 Josh ADDO-CARR Melbourne Wing 11 14 Fa'asuamaleaui (Titans), Angus Crichton (Roosters), Tariq Sims (Dragons), Daniel 2 Brett MORRIS Sydney Wing, Centre 7 11 Saifiti (Knights), Bradman Best (Knights), Adam Clune (Dragons), Jake Clifford 3 Jason SAAB Manly Wing 11 10 (Cowboys), Luke Thompson (Bulldogs), Ryan Sutton (Raiders), Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (Bulldogs), Jason Saab (Sea Eagles), Jake Granville (Cowboys), Jared Waerea- Maika SIVO Parramatta Wing 11 10 Hargreaves (Roosters), Corey Harawira-Naera (Raiders), Josh Schuster (Sea Eagles), 5 David FIFITA Gold Coast Second Row 9 9 Keaon Koloamatangi (Rabbitohs), Reuben Garrick (Sea Eagles); 2 points -
