The Black-eyed Snakes often perform at the Homegrown Music Festival in Duluth, Minnesota. Black-eyed Snakes was selected by City Pages as the Best New Band of 2001. Their attitude towards the blues is summed up by Sparhawk: "We actually hate most blues. We were trying to destroy it. We're interested in putting the blues back into a gut level -- instead of talent, we go with feeling more.''

BNLX: An organization devoted to creation and extrapolation of memes and other specialized cultural products, BNLX is the midst of executing its Second One Year Plan. Its goal: to meet and/ or exceed expectations as it renders mission-critical services to The Revolution, The Industry of Human Happiness, The Kids, and its other valued customers. CARS AND TRUCKS: Guys who've done time bringing you the Dames, Farewell Tour, Seed Math, and Words to a Film Score. This is Cars & Trucks. This is music to smile like the Cheshire Cat to. Just sit back, relax, and think: the Beatles, the Monkees, the Who, the Kinks. Dream of Brendan Benson and Matthew Sweet. Have visions of Cheap Trick or Guided by Voices. If you're into music that is more filled with hooks than Babe Winkelman's tackle box, this band is for you. Music Line-Up

TANGIER 57: Tangier 57 is an evolution. Originally a vehicle to explore the lost arts of lounge-exotica-elevator music, our musical fellowship has expanded, retracted morphed and congealed many times. Always guided by the seemingly oppositional axioms of “exploration” and “holding it back for the ladies”, Tangier 57 is propelled by duality. At our core is a reverence for the subtle and a reliance on the blunt .. a musical walking softly and carrying a big stick.

Some have called us Lawrence Welk meets Pink Floyd … others have described us as psychedelic elevator music with a mojito spilled on it. What ever they say, for us, it’s about musical freedom, ongoing fellowship and experimental mixology. Also available for kids parties and Bar Mitzvahs.

EQUAL XCHANGE: All original, live hip hop in the frozen North.

MAUDLIN: The band is a blitz of post punk, guitar smashing, wreck the train Rock and Roll that has not been seen since the glory days of CBGB. Behind all the Rock and Roll stance is a band with big brains and big hearts.

PLANEMO: A planetary-mass object, PMO, or planemo is a celestial object with a mass that falls within the range of the definition of a planet: massive enough to achieve hydrostatic equilibrium (to be rounded under its own gravity), but not enough to sustain core fusion like a star. By definition, all planets are planetary-mass objects, but the purpose of the term is to describe objects which do not conform to typical expectations for a planet. These include dwarf planets, the larger moons, free-floating planets not orbiting a star, such as rogue planets ejected from their system, and objects that formed through cloud-collapse rather than accretion (sometimes called sub-brown dwarfs). In the moving and courageous tradition of Norma Rae and North Country, Wildrose tells the very special story of a strong-willed woman’s fight for her own identity and independence. June Lorich (Lisa Eichhorn) works at the Mesabi Mine on northern Minnesota's Iron Range. After an emotionally and physically abusive marriage, June is determined to make it on her own. Hard work and good pay give her the first financial independence shes ever known, but the worsening steel industry economy forces major cutbacks and June is bumped down to an all-male pit. She becomes the brunt of harassment and hostilities while romantically pursued by Rick (Tom Bower), one of the men on her crew. When layoffs come and Rick returns to his former life as a commercial fisherman on Lake Superior, Billy (Steve Yoakam), Junes abusive ex-husband reappears and June is forced to fight for her job, her life and her love for Rick. NORTHERN LIGHTS SATURDAY, JUNE 2 • 5:20 PM • ZINEMA MADE IN MN!

Northern Lights, winner of the Camera d Or for Best First Feature at the Cannes International Film Festival and many other prizes around the world, is a classic American independent film. Against a backdrop of a bitter winter on the Dakota prairie and the equally brutal economic forces of 1915, a story unfolds which pits small Midwestern farmers against the powers that be - bankers, railroad men, big grain dealers and an entrenched political machine. Based on the fictional diary of farmer Ray Sorenson, Northern Lights chronicles the struggle of these small farmers as they fight to save their farms, their families and their very way of life. By banding together in a grassroots movement - the little known Nonpartisan League - Ray and his cohorts confront great odds and Ray's own personal doubts and dilemmas in his love for the beautiful Inga.

Using beautifully spare means, directors John Hanson and Rob Nilsson have fashioned a film abundantly rich in human emotion, drama and intimacy. And through their heartfelt tale, they have produced an enduring anthem to both the strength and the triumph of the human spirit. Director: John Hanson, 1978, 95 Minutes, English, 35 MM NARRATIVE FILMS RUBBERNECK SUNDAY, JUNE 3• 7:00 PM • ZINEMA

Premiering at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, Rubberneck follows Paul Harris (Karpovsky) a scientist at a small research facility on the outskirts of Boston. After a weekend tryst with Danielle, an attractive co-worker, leaves him wanting more, his unreciprocated desires gradually mold into an acute infatuation over the following months. Pauls suppressed resentments and perverse delusions become unhinged, triggering a horrific course of events that mercilessly engulf a tortured past and fugitive present. A slow-burning, psychosexual thriller, Rubberneck navigates the underpinnings of obsessions, and our sadistic inability to look away. Director: Alex Karpovsky, 2012, 83 minutes, English, Bluray HOLIDAY BEACH SATURDAY, JUNE 2 • 7:15 PM • ZINEMA MADE IN MN!

The year is 1962. At Holiday Beach, a remote naval station on Kodiak Island, Alaska. But Holiday Beach is anything but a beach or holiday. Navy radiomen count off every day until they leave. Mostly due to Seaman Deuce Harding a psychopath who promises each new radioman a beating before his tour is up. Our story begins with new radioman Carl Miller arriving at Holiday Beach. Almost immediately he finds himself in Harding's crosshairs, because he reads books and seems to believe in President Kennedy‚™'s vision of a good and just world. Harding seems determined to show Miller the world is not so good or just as he would believe. And speaking of the world, the Cuban Missile Crisis is beginning. As tensions rise between the U.S. and Soviets, so do they on Holiday Beach. True to form, Harding sees the impending apocalypse as an opportunity. Located on a remote Alaskan island, there is a good chance Holiday Beach will survive. Someone will need to take over, once the world is blown to bits. Who better than he, Harding, to lead a 'New World'? Armed with this responsibility, he becomes even more dangerous. Holiday Beach takes on a 'Lord of the Flies'‚ aura and Miller finds himself emerging as Harding's main rival. The story climaxes with the culmination of the Missile Crisis.

Kennedy vs. Khrushchev, America vs. the Soviets, Miller vs. Harding -- good versus evil. We know how the Cuban Missile Crisis ended. Would that be the case for Miller and the radiomen of Holiday Beach? (Inspired by true events.)

Director: Steve Larson, 2012, 92 minutes, English, Bluray MARVIN SETH AND STANLEY FRIDAY, JUNE 1 • 7:30 PM • ZINEMA MADE IN MN!

The usually quarreling Greenstein brothers Seth (Tiny Furniture's Alex Karpovsky) and Stanley (writer/director Stephen Gurewitz) reluctantly agree to join their father, Marvin (the filmmaker's real-life dad, Marvin Gurewitz) for a fishing and camping trip in rural Minnesota. Estranged from each other, Marvin, Stanley, and Seth, whose marriage is secretly deteriorating, find repressed grudges against each other rising to the surface as the weekend getaway comically devolves into a series of daytime drinking episodes and failed activities for this trio of inept outdoorsmen. A comedy for anyone who has participated in family squabbles and slept in cornfields when they couldn't pitch a tent, Marvin Seth & Stanley also authentically captures the look and feel of the autumnal Midwestern landscape through lovely 16mm color cinematography.

WE RUN SHIT SATURDAY, June 2 • 9:15 PM • Zinema WE RUN SH*T is a never-before seen expose into the stressful and sometimes criminal element of top tier nightlife entertainment. The unique and often harrowing experiences behind the scenes created a portal for the public to fully understand the mechanisms involved in the entertainment industry. What started as a behind the scenes shoot turned into a full on catastrophe, all in front of our camera. In that sense, this movie was purely accidental. Augmented with hand-drawn animation to fill in the gaps, this film turned out to be a unique project for us all.

Director: Scott Storm, 2012, 91 Minutes, English, Bluray

UNDER AFRICAN SKIES THURSDAY, MAY 31 • 9:00 PM • ZINEMA In UNDER AFRICAN SKIES Joe Berlinger travels back to South Africa with Paul -- his first trip back in 25 years, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the historic Graceland album. Paul reunites with the band to give a reunion concert and that present tense thread is then used to tell the story of the turbulent birth of the album. Despite its huge success, and despite it being the first popular/successful example of fusing American and African musical styles, it was initially met with tremendous political crossfire, as Paul was accused of breaking the UN cultural boycott of South Africa designed to end the Apartheid regime. Paul revisits these ghosts as the musical journey is explored. The film features interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Harry Belafonte, David Byrne, Philip Glass, Lorne Michaels, Whoopi Goldberg, Quincy Jones, and Steve Van Zandt.

Director: Joe Berlinger, 2012, 101 Minutes, English, Bluray

THE ENTERTAINERS SATURDAY, June 2 • 9:00 PM • SONS OF NORWAY HALL

MADE IN WI! WINNER-Audience Award, Best Documentary at the Wisconsin Film Festival and MSP Film Festival in April 2012, this heartwarming documentary reminiscent of Spellbound and‚ Word Wars, six ragtime piano players from all parts of the country compete for the coveted top prize at the World Championship of Old-Time Piano Playing's annual tournament in Peoria, Illinois. Directors Michael Zimmer and Nick Holle follow the trials and tribulations of their amateur stars with insight and intelligence, capturing the showmanship and skill of one of America's most fascinating subcultures. In addition, the film provides an anecdotal history of ragtime, the first distinctly American popular music, showcasing the private collections of some of the music's most fervent devotees. With unforgettable characters and nonstop ragtime piano playing, The Entertainers is a film that truly lives up to its title.

THE CONNECTION Saturday, June 2 • 5:30 PM • SONS OF NORWAY HALL

MADE IN MN! When Ian Harvey set out to row across Lake Superior for charity in 2005, they called him 'The Crazy Irishman' crazy to row 400 miles in a single scull boat across the largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Superior or Gitchie Gumie is so cold and deep it's said it never gives up its dead. It's where the 729 foot Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in a storm with all of her 29 crew, it’s where the American poet Longfellow was inspired to write 'The Song of Hiawatha.'

The Chippewa or Ojibwa Indians who live around the lake followed Ian Harvey’s dramatic row which took 8 days and two nights. When Ian reached Grand Island, members of the Bear Clan went to meet him. On the jetty in Munising, Kris LeVeque felt an instant connection between Ian and her legendary ancestors who'd made a similar journey in the early 1800's to fight the Chippewa’s deadly enemy The Sioux. The connection was so strong that the LeVeque family invited Ian to be adopted into their Bear Clan and become a blood brother.

This film is an insight into the 21st century native American way of life and the relationship that grew from an heroic act. Director: Peter Minns, 2012, 52 Minutes, English, Bluray

LAST DAY AT LAMBEAU FRIDAY, June 1 • 7:15 PM • SONS OF NORWAY HALL

MADE IN WI! A documentary that will be of great interest to football fans in general and Packer fans in particular, Last Day at Lambeau chronicles the adoration and contempt that millions of sports fans feel toward pro football star Brett Favre. The film depicts the divorce of Favre and the Green Bay Packers in 2008 and concludes with Favre's last game at Lambeau Field on October 24, 2010. In an approach that is notable for its even-handedness, director Michael Neelsen explores in impressive detail the controversial fate of Brett Favre, soliciting opinions and responses from historians, journalists, and fans. Ultimately, the film is as much about the fascinating and complicated relationships fans have with their heroes as it is about the ultimately divergent paths of Favre and the Packers.

In 1995, a group of young filmmakers created an epic globe-spanning adventure movie called "Di'Ablo"....shot entirely in Duluth. Fifteen years later, the cast and crew (who all work at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis now) reflect on this origin project. Presented with 60 min. original film, Diablo. Directors: Michael Uss and Eric Andersen, 2012, total program 102 Minutes, English, Bluray LOW: YOU MAY NEED A MURDERER

Thursday, May 31 • 7:00 PM •ZINEMA Duluth band Low has been blessed by many films over the years, with fine work from Marc Gartman, Sebastian Schrade, Phil Harder, and others. But one film stands above the pack. You May Need a Murderer, directed by Dutchman David Kleijwegt, is both the best film about Low and one of the best films about Duluth.

Shot for Dutch television around 2006, You May Need a Murderer catches Low in a post- apocalyptic haze. "" era, with its songs about going deaf and walking into the sea, its canceled tours and other drama, has passed. What now?

Here we see Alan Sparhawk developing songs that would be on "," and rocking with an early form of the Retribution Gospel Choir, while Mimi Parker endures as the anchor. Sparhawk's apocalypticism does resurface: he quotes the LDS Doctrine and Covenants, and discusses 9/11 and his harrowing song "Murderer." But, life goes on -- witness the counterpoint of "When I Go Deaf" with Sparhawk out for a jog.

Murderer has few peers among films depicting deep, conflicted love for Duluth, though Venus of Mars and Far North come to mind. Like those films, Murderer depicts a creative individual not in sync with the region's reigning disappear-into-the-woods romanticism. Murderer's finest moments include what first seem like filler: a reference to Duluth as Timbuktu, scenes of Sparhawk on the Point of Rocks. Yet these rank with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's and F. Scott Fitzgerald's passages about dreamers gazing out on Gitchee Gumee. - R.C. Privett Director: David Kleijwegt, 2008, 70 minutes, In English, Bluray regional shorts collection
