An innovation in museum typology is needed to help tourists interpret the artifacts that been found at the site in a contextual manner. Through a study of literature by experts such as Victoria Newhouse, Stephen Wells, and other authors, and by analyzing successful interpretive center projects, I have developed a document outlining the reasons for on-site interpretive centers and their functions and used this material in a case study at the site of ancient Troy. My study produced a research document regarding museology and design strategy for the physical building, and will be applicable to any new construction on a sensitive site. I hope to establish a precedent that sites can use when adapting to this new type of visitors. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank a number of people for their support while I have been completing this program. -

Dendrochronologically Dated Ottoman Monuments Peter Ian Kuniholm 4 Dendrochronologically Dated Ottoman Monuments Peter Ian Kuniholm INTRODUCTION Dendrochronology or tree-ring dating has been carried out by the author in former Ottoman lands since 1973. The method is, at its sim- plest, to compare the alternately small and large annual growth-rings from trees from a given climate region-in this case as far west as Bosnia and as far east as Erzurum-and to match them so that a unique year-by-year growth profile may be developed. By means of this a precise date determination, accurate even to the year in which the wood was cut, is possible. See Kuniholm (1995) for a fuller discussion of the method; and then see Kuniholm and Striker (1983; 1987) and Kuniholm (1996) for earlier date-lists of Ottoman, post-Byzantine, and Byzantine buildings, including brief notices of dates for a dozen more dated Ottoman buildings, principally in Greece, and additional notices of sampled but not yet dated buildings which are not repeated here. What follows is a compilation, in reverse chronological order, of over fifty dated buildings or sites (more if one counts their constituent parts) from the nineteenth century back to the twelfth (Figure 4.1). Some are major monuments (imperial mosques, sarays, sifayes) clearly deserving of more comprehensive treatment than can be pro- vided here; others (tiirbes, mescits, obscure medreses, and private houses) are little-known, perhaps even unheard of except to special- ists; but all help to form part of the tree-ring sequence which begins with the rings of trees still standing in Turkish forests and extends in an unbroken chain to A.D.360 for oak, A.D.743 for pine, and A.D.1037 for juniper. -

Where Have All the Symbols Gone?: A Study of Sufis and Sufi yS mbolism in Ottoman Miniature Paintings Abstract Ottoman miniature paintings represent some of the best preserved and documented works of Islamic art still extant. They differ critically from other forms of miniature painting, such as Persian miniature painting, by not representing Sufi symbolism. In the two potential sources of such symbolism, Ottoman Sufism and Persian miniature painters in the Ottoman Empire, appear to have not critically influenced Ottoman miniature painting to produce Sufi symbols, do to political, religious, and cultural factors. -

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! In Romans 16:23 Paul mentions his friend Erastus and • • we will see an inscription to him at the site. In the afternoon we will drive to GREECE CRETE TURKEY Nafplion for check-in at hotel followed by dinner and overnight. HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display. -

Asian Textiles and the Grammar of Ornament: Design in the Victorian Age, November 16, 2007-August 3, 2008 This exhibition mines the Museum’s permanent collection of Asian textiles from the perspective of the 19th-century British designer and educator, Owen Jones (1809–74), author of The Grammar of Ornament (London: 1856). On view are textiles whose patterns are paired with corresponding plates from his publication. His assessment of decorative “language” was compiled as a pattern book for all of the applied arts from architecture to textiles. His sources are the ornamental traditions from cultures across the globe, including India, Persia, Egypt, and China. Critical to his undertaking was London’s Great Exposition of 1851, the setting in which the technology and manufacturing processes of the Industrial Revolution were displayed for all to see. The huge state-of-the-art glass-and- iron Crystal Palace constructed in Hyde Park for the event was the architectural stage upon which nations from around the world—but most importantly, England—displayed their accomplishments. Among the great number of Western visitors to the show, a vast majority were viewing the applied arts of other cultures for the very first time. The single most powerful influence on the applied arts during the 19th century was the reexamining of design education and practice. Reform therein was motivated by what some saw as the negative side of the Industrial Revolution. In challenge to the popular notion that new, fast, and cheap were the progressive ideals of a modern society, Jones and others started to rethink the effect this was having on design.
