A former high school and player ... a former high school principal and coach ... and now a college president who firmly believes fa intercollegiate athletics . . . such is the man behind Morehead State College.

A scholar and a man who knows the true value of athlet ics, Dr. Adron Doran has said, "Participation in intercollegiate athletics is an area in which students and faculties of colleges and universities come to know one another more intimately and to understand the other better. Through competitive sports we come to appreciate the individual and collective accomplish ments of the teams as well as to be drawn closer together as institutional representatives in group confidence and respect."

Dr. Doran is embarking upon his fifth year at the More head State College helm. Under his guidance, the new field house and Doran Student House have been built and a new men's dormitory will soon be under construction. The dorm itories have been redecorated and refurnished, new science laboratories have been added, the enrollment has greatly in cr eased as has the faculty and athletics have been at a peak never before seen in Morehead.

Since coming to Morehead, Dr. Doran has assisted in arranging a schedule to qualify the college as a major school and has seen the Eagles set a national scoring record which still stands, finish third in the NCAA Regional at Iowa City in 1956, participate again in the NCAA tourney in 1957 and hold the championship both years.

A man of vision, Dr. Doran has helped open the doors to greater athletic and academic achievement at Morehead State College.

P age Three Coach Bob Laughlin

Bob Laughlin, beginning his sixth year as the More head State College basketball coach, has .compiled an enviable 81-45 record and has never had a losing season as a college coacn. An advocate of the fast break, Laughlin's 1957-58 team finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference race after winning the league title the two previou:: years. This season Laughlin will count heavily on the pro gress of five untried sophomores. A native of Mt. Sterling, the popular Laughlin attend· ed Xavier University in Cincinnati where a leg injury in his sophmore year cut short his playing days. He r eceived his AB degree from Morehead in 1937, his MA from the University of Kentucky in 1941 and worked on his doctorate at tbe, ·u niversity of Indiana. Laughlin came to Morehea'd in 1935 as an assistant football coach and head basketball coach at Breckinridge Training School. As coach of the Train.ng S ~hool tor 14 seasons, he accumulated an ,enviable r ~::ord of taking his teams to the regional tourney 12 times-being a finalist 10 of the 12 times. Laughlin won the State High School Basketball Championship in 1946. An astute student of the game, the affal)i ':? L:rnghlin can always be found with a big grin and a hearty laugh .... when he's not on the basketball floor. Then it's all business for Bob Laughlin, who has lifted Morehead State College into the ranks of the basketball powers of the nation.
