Welcome to Penicuik Park

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Penicuik Park today to recognise ten years of service to Penicuik Athletic by Ryan Gay. Ryan has been a tremendous servant to the club and is a very talented footballer who in making over 250 appearances for the club has shown a degree of loyalty rarely seen in the modern ‘junior’ game. I am delighted that so many of his current and former team mates at Penicuik and from his invited opposition a Hearts XI , where he spent three seasons as a young footballer, have taken time out to celebrate his testimonial match with him. He thoroughly deserves the honour today.

I would like to thank Penicuik Athletic for providing the park and facilities for today’s game and to all those who have contributed to make it a successful day for Ryan especially Dougie Penman and Jimmy Wight for their efforts in bringing this souvenir programme to you, and to all those who have sponsored todays match.

A Message from Ryan Gay

I would like first of all to thank Penicuik Athletic for giving me the honour of a testimonial to recognise my ten years of service to them, and for staging today’s game. Ten years is a long time in football and I didn’t think that when I signed on the dotted line for Willie McGinley ten years ago that I would still be here at this stage of my career. I’d like to thank all the players, committee and supporters at the club for the support I have had and to the managers I have played for namely Willie McGinley, ‘Snowy’ McKean, Bryan Ryrie and Craig Meikle for giving me the chance to play for them.

To all the guys who play in today’s match – Thank You, at some point in my career I couldn’t have achieved what I have without you, and I hope we all enjoy today’s game, where for once the result won’t matter.

I have enjoyed some fantastic times at Penicuik and fair to say some disappointments as well, but if there is a moment that will remain with me when my playing days are over it will be the day we won the and I had the pleasure of scoring the second goal.

Finally to my wife Joanne, and daughters Paige, Amelie and Orla, a massive thank you for giving me your support, keeping my chin up when it was down and sharing the good times with me.

Congratulations to Ryan on his Testimonial

Ten Minutes with Ryan Gay

This article is reproduced with the kind permission of Penicuik Athletic FC and first appeared in the programme for the Scottish Junior Cup tie v Arbroath Victoria on 22 November 2014. How does it feel to be Penicuik’s longest serving player? It is an honour really. I love playing for this great club and hopefully there will be many more years to come. You signed in 2006/07, played 242 games and scored 50 goals, what do you think of your record with Penicuik? Very proud of that record to be honest. I didn’t realise I had played so many games. Looking back, what do you think was your most influential game for the Club and why? It has to be the Fauldhouse game at the end of last season. To score the goal that secured the league title was very special. What do you think was your best goal for Penicuik and why did you select that particular one? I remember playing Dundee North End at home about 5 years ago. I tried a shot with my left foot from about 25-30 yards and somehow it flew into the top corner. Over the years, who did you regard as the best Penicuik players you played with and why? We have had some very good players over the years however I would have to say Johnny Harvey. To score 100 goals for a single club is an unbelievable achievement. Every time I managed to get a cross in, Johnny would always manage to get on the end of it. You have seen a few managers come and go, who made the biggest impression on you and why was that? Willie McGinley brought me to the club and I really enjoyed playing under him. Also when the Gaffer, Bryan Ryrie and Paul Riley took over they made me club captain, which meant a lot and made a big impression on me (saying that the Gaffer has also taken it off me but we won’t mention that part lol). Having been promoted to the Super League, how do you think the team will do at that level? The ability we have in our dressing room we should be competing to win the Super League, there is no doubt about that. What do you personally hope to achieve this year? Hopefully stay fit, injury free and help the team win more silverware.

Ten Minutes with Ryan Gay

Which player would you aspire to emulate and why? I am a huge fan; the best midfield player of the 21st century in my opinion. As a player, what do you look for from your teammates? Hard work and giving 100% for the team. In all the time you have been with Penicuik:- • Who has been the worst dressed person in the team? Easy one – Grant Killin by a country mile. Just shocking. • Who had the worst habit in the dressing room and what was it? Scott Montgomery has a habit of saying “aw right” after every sentence. His team talks are always amusing as he is totally unaware he is doing it. • Who has been the thickest player in the team? They have been too many over the years however we are blessed at the moment as we have quite a switched on squad. (And I can’t name Killin twice or he will think I don’t like him). • Who has been the most intelligent player in the team (1) Intellectually and (2) Footballing brain? Academically would be Chris Hill and Football brain would have to be Yanny. What really annoys you? When people don’t give 100% at whatever it is they do. If you didn’t play football what would you do on a Saturday? I would be the designated taxi driver for my daughters. The amount of extra-curricular activities they do is unbelievable. Tell us something we don’t know about you and might surprise us. I am addicted to coffee. In an average day I will have around 10 cups of coffee. Finally, what are your interests outside football? As weird as it may sound I enjoy working. Whenever I am not working I am spending time with my wife and 3 daughters.

What they said about Ryan Gay

John Fraser (President – Penicuik Athletic) I would like to add my voice to the tributes that are being paid to Ryan Gay today. His testimonial after ten years of excellent service to Penicuik Athletic is well deserved. This achievement should not be under estimated. It is not only the ninety minutes on a Saturday which is what most people see but the rest of it which goes into reaching such a memorable landmark. There are a lot of sacrifices along the way and support from a strong family and group of friends. Training two nights a week for almost ten months of the year in all sorts of conditions, indoor and outdoor in all types of weather, giving up Friday nights to be fit and fresh on a Saturday and then travelling all over the East of Scotland on match days. Ryan now has his own business with all that that entails and has a young family too, and is a shining example to any aspiring football player. His reliability and performance levels are a credit to him and the hard work he has put in. Penicuik Athletic are indeed fortunate that Ryan has given so much over the years. - Enjoy your day, Ryan – it is richly well deserved.

Paul Riley (Ex Assistant Manager and team mate of Ryan) “I had the privilege of playing alongside Ryan at Penicuik before moving on to the coaching team! During this period I watched a guy grow as a footballer, he was outstanding in the promotion year and I felt at that time he was the best midfielder in the East Juniors. In an era when players rarely show loyalty to one club Ryan deserves massive credit.....he's a real Penicuik man and I can assure any fans that after a defeat it hurt Ryan more than most. The successes in recent years have a lot to do with this guy! Well done mate!!!”

Andy Penman (Programme Editor – Penicuik Athletic) “Having watched the club since my teenage years, when I had the chance to pick my best ever Penicuik team for the ‘Fan’tastic section in our match day programme one of the first names on my team sheet was Ryan Gay. I’ve watched Ryan develop from a young 20 year old full of enthusiasm and rash challenges as well as no little skill to a mature football making correct decisions on the park, and influencing games to such an extent that he has often turned the tide in the Cuikie’s favour and games at Armadale and Girvan instantly come to mind. The best midfielder at the club since the Cuikie came back, I think that says it all!, but never did I think I’d see him playing in goals as he did against Blairgowrie a few seasons back. Congratulations Ryan, and thank you for everything you have done for Penicuik Athletic.”

Ryan’s Penicuik Athletic XI Here’s what some of Ryan’s team-mates today had to say about him…

Youssef Bejaoui “It’s been a great pleasure to have played with Ryan over the last three years. He’s a great guy to have in the changing room and I’m sure there’s been plenty of boys during his 10 years at Penicuik that he’s nutmegged at training and called ‘megs’ and ran away with that cheeky laugh. I have also never played with anyone above 15 years old that loves 1D as much as Ryan He loves a wee sing along on away trips.

If there’s anybody that you can call Mr Penicuik it is Ryan and it was fitting that he scored the winning goal to secure our promotion to the Super League for the first time. He’s also a good family man so I hope you and your family enjoy your day. Putting 10 years of winter training sessions on that astro stuff is what legends are made of.”

Greg Ross “He’s the man you can rely on to bring the biscuits into training!! Ryan’s a great guy, with a big arse, that nobody has a bad word to say about! Was a pleasure playing behind him down the right hand side, had my best games with him in front of me. Fully deserves his testimonial. I just hope he is fit or not working to be able to play.”

Michael McDermott “Ryan is one of the most naturally gifted players I have played with. Everything he does, looks and seems effortless. He's a great team mate and someone you can count on in the dressing room. When Ryan is missing from the team it's clearly noticeable as we are stronger with him in it. You rarely see testimonials these days which shows the character and drive he has for the club. I have never played with someone that makes me laugh so much during games. One last thing, just want to wish him the best on the 22nd and for the rest of his career. He's a top guy.”

Scott McCulloch “I’ve known Ryan since we were 9 years old, played with and against him until now. Even then I knew how good he was going to be, he had such a great talent!! He’s a great guy on and off the field, I’m really close with him (not just because he is good for bringing the biscuits to training) and speak to him everyday over the phone. He's a fantastic player, great ability and has a wonderful right foot. Great for guys like myself to get on the end of his deliveries as he's possibly the best in junior football for set pieces!!

To be at a club for 10 years is a massive accomplishment and shows the loyalty he has, he’s a born winner! I should know with playing against him (he's a nightmare), I’ve got the scars to on the ankles to remind me! Penicuik should be proud to have a man of his calibre at the club. Ryan deserves this day and more. Well done Ryan and all the best, hope you have a great day mate.”

Ryan’s Penicuik Athletic XI

Lewis Barr “It’s been a pleasure to play alongside Ryso this season. A fantastic footballer and an even better guy. I enjoy watching him tie full backs in knots and I hope that he continues to do this for a few more years yet! 10 years playing for the same club is a great achievement - The Penicuik Gerrard! Enjoy your day mate.”

Keith Barr “It's a great achievement for Ryan to reach 10 years for Penicuik when players change clubs so frequently now. It was a pleasure to play with Ryan and had a great relationship with him as a player but more importantly a friend. A great player, with one of the best deliveries of the ball I've seen, who can change a game on his own. He's been fantastic servant to Penicuik who always remained loyal. I was lucky to play with him for so many years and share the laughs, experiences and banter together. It wouldn't be the same without him at Penicuik. I always said to Ryan when I was a young boy I played on the back garden with my No.7 Gay shirt on although he keeps telling me he's only turning 30 now. Jury is out. Well done on reaching 10 years Ryso, great achievement and hopefully many more to come for you. Enjoy your day mate.”

Johnny Harvey “I’m absolutely delighted to have been asked back to Penicuik Athletic today to recognise the service Ryan has given to the club. I remember quite clearly the day Ryan signed for the club and me and my other team mates immediately getting a lift from the news. It showed ambition that we were able to attract good young talent away from another rival club. Ryan was a quiet lad with great ability and for me as a striker an absolute delight to play with. I knew as soon as he was given the ball there was a strong possibility he would find me and that’s exactly the way it turned out. I’m sure Ryan probably setup about 90% of my goals here and for that I’m thankful.”

Willie McGinley “Ryan Gay – What a Player. First time I saw Ryan playing for Newtongrange Star I knew he was something special. Ryan is one of my favourite players and not just because he was signed during my time as manager. Even now when he plays on the right wing he excites me! The way he glides past opponents; his quick feet; his delivery of the ball either on the run or from set plays and his range of passing long or short: He is just a joy to watch. I am sure Johnny Harvey would not have scored as many goals for Penicuik Athletic if it wasn’t for Ryan’s consistent quality deliveries. My only disappointment was that he never got the opportunity to go back to the senior ranks, how no team took a gamble and believe me it would not have been a gamble is beyond me. It has been senior games loss and Penicuik Athletics’ gain. I salute you Ryan for your loyalty to Penicuik Athletic as I know you are a very sought after player with some of the big guns such as Linlithgow Rose among many others being suitors of yours for a long time, but good on you Ryan for staying put and being a massive influence on taking Penicuik Athletic back to the top league and hope to see you help us progress even further.

Congratulations Ryan hope you have a great day.”
