Analysis Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP – Transport Secretary
Following the surprising decision to expand Jeremy Hunt’s role across both health and Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP – social care as one portfolio, the Department of Health has accordingly been renamed International Development the Department of Health and Social Care. The DHSC said the changed brief for the Secretary department will see it take a lead on the upcoming Government green paper on social
care for older people, due later this year. This merger surely emphasises the Damian Hinds MP – Education government’s continued commitment to the integration agenda – hopefully this will be Secretary the shift that enables the government to deliver truly tangible progress, to the benefit of
patients. Rt Hon David Lidington MP –
Chancellor of the Duchy of
Lancaster and Cabinet Office Reportedly, it was Hunt who resisted the much speculated move to First Secretary of State, having last year stated Minister his desires for the NHS to be his ‘last big job’ in politics. However, with his greater portfolio of responsibilities in his newly tweaked role within the DHSC, there is at least promise of continuity and stability for patients, industry and the Rt Hon David Mundell MP – NHS. Scotland Secretary
Hunt’s new team will certainly be under pressure to hit positive strides early on, in the wake of Philip Dunne’s gaffe Rt Hon Alun Cairns MP – Wales about A&E closures (stating in parliament that patients can ‘sit in seats’ if no A&E beds are available), resulting in the Secretary loss of his Ministerial position.
