There are several tax credits that you may be eligible for: Earned Income Did you work in 2012? You may be eligible for the Earned Credit – even if you don’t owe income tax. If you worked in 2012: • Did you have one child living with you? Did you earn less than $36,920 by yourself or $42,130 if you are married and filing jointly? You may be eligible for an earned income tax credit up to $3,169. • Did you have 2 children living with you? Did you earn less than $41,952 by yourself or $47,162 if you are married and filing jointly? You may be eligible for an earned income tax credit up to $5,236. • Did you have 3 children living with you? Did you earn less than $45,060 by yourself or $50,270 if you are married and filing jointly? You may be eligible for an earned income tax credit up to $5,891. • If you had no children living with you, did you earn less than $13,980 in 2012 by yourself or $19,190 if you are married and filing jointly? Were you between the ages of 25 and 64? You may be eligible for an earned income tax credit up to $475. Child Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit Many families may qualify for the Child Tax Credit refund of up to $1,000 for each qualifying child under the age of 17. If the amount of your Child Tax Credit is greater than the amount of income tax you owe, you may be able to claim the Additional Child Tax Credit. American Opportunity Tax Credit If you are a student or a parent of a dependent student in the first four years of post-secondary education, you may be eligible for an American Opportunity Tax Credit of up to $2,500. Eligible students must be enrolled at least part-time working toward an undergraduate degree, must have paid for tuition and/or related course material, and must have an adjusted gross income of less than $80,000 or $160,000 if married. Most households with annual incomes of $60,000 or less can file for free with The Ohio Benefit Bank.
