Juno Talent: Ellen Page, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Alison Janney, J. K. Simmons, Olivia Thirlby. Date of review: Thursday 13th December, 2007 Director: Jason Reitman Duration: 91 minutes Classification: M We rate it: 4 and a half stars. Jason Reitman, son of ultra-mainstream (and very successful) Hollywood director Ivan Reitman (he of Ghostbusters, Stripes and Kindergarten Cop fame) may just be able to move out from under his father’s significant shadow with this wonderful film. Jason Reitman’s breakthrough film as a director was 2005’s Thank You for Smoking, a cleverly written and very well performed black comedy that was so well pulled-off that one felt in the presence of promising new talent. It seems that feeling was correct, because with Juno, a very different film to its predecessor, Reitman has made an utterly assured and charming comedy/drama, and has drawn tremendously convincing and engaging performances from the entire cast. The talented young actress Ellen Page (who was so memorable in the confronting thriller Hard Candy) plays the titular character, an intelligent, articulate, out-of-left- field high-school student who, as our story opens, finds herself pregnant to her close friend and would-be boyfriend, Bleeker. Being smart, strong and self-possessed, Juno confronts her situation level-headedly, and decides, on reflection, that she will go through with the pregnancy and offer her child for adoption to a couple who are unable to conceive. With the support of her family - stepmother Bren (the wonderful Alison Janney) and father Mac (the ever-humourous J.

MoMA | press | Releases | 2001 | Good Marchine: Tenth Anniversary Page 1 of 4 For Immediate Release February 2001 THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART TO CELEBRATE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF GOOD MACHINE, NEW YORK-BASED PRODUCTION COMPANY Good Machine: Tenth Anniversary February 13-23, 2001 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1 Over the past ten years, Good Machine, a New York-based production company helmed by Ted Hope, David Linde and James Schamus, has become one of the major forces in independent film culture worldwide. Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. "Good Machine proves that audiences do want to be entertained intelligently and engaged substantively," remarks Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Video, who organized the series. "Their achievements are reflected in this Tenth Anniversary series and are, in large part, due to Good Machine's collaborations with filmmakers and its respect for the creative process." In addition to producing and co-producing films, Good Machine has gone on to establish an international sales company involved in distributing diverse and unusual works such as Joan Chen's Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) and Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000).

  • At Universal Studios
2018 Mentor Meeting: Carl Hansen's 'Team Cultural Detritus' at Universal Studios As part of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, the winning filmmakers are awarded mentorship meetings with active members of the entertainment industry. ‘Check Mate’ was awarded “Best Film” in the 2018 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, and the winning team was treated to an exciting day at Universal Studios. Here is creator Carl Hansen’s take on his team’s special day: “I got to the Universal Studios Gate 2 just on time after navigating Los Angeles traffic from dropping my son off at preschool. The security guard told me where to park and I drove in. I apparently passed the parking lot where I was supposed to go and ended up going up a big hill that’s used on the official Tram tours, oops. So I turned around and Jeff Cafuir, director of Community Investment at NBCUniversal, was waiting for me as I pulled in. After exchanging hellos he walked me briskly to an executive building and we proceeded to the top floor reception desk, marked by “Universal Pictures” in large letters around the front. I promptly had to take a photo of the desk because my first paid job at the tender age of 14 was on the movie, “Housesitter” (starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn) which had been distributed by Universal Pictures - it felt very full-circle. We were then swiftly guided down to a very large conference room where I met Gesumino Rulli, manager of Global Talent Development & Inclusion, Caitlyn Halsey, manager of the Universal Pictures story department and Charlie Alderman from Focus Features.

  • Representations of Education in HBO's the Wire, Season 4
Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. Specifically, I will attempt to show associate professor in the that season four holds great pedagogical potential for School of Education at academics in education.1 First, though, I will present the University of North examples of the critical acclaim that The Wire received Carolina at Chapel throughout its run, and I will introduce the backgrounds Hill, Chapel Hill, North of the creators and main writers of the series, David Carolina.
