Assistant Professor of Graphic Design the Lamar Dodd School of Art At Assistant Professor of Graphic Design The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applicants for a position at the Assistant Professor rank with a focus in graphic design/visual communication design. The anticipated start date is August 2021. The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the future of the program, placing value on design fundamentals while embracing innovative and diverse technologies, ideologies, and methodologies in creative practice and teaching. The faculty member will pursue an active program of research and/or creative practice, teach a 2/2 load of courses, collaborate with design area faculty in curricular and program development, and contribute to service to the School, University, community, and the design profession. Faculty members are expected to support the college’s goals of creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive learning environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service. A terminal degree (i.e., MFA, MDes, M.Arch or PhD) in graphic design or a related field is required. Ideal Candidates will show the following: ● Facility with typography and communication design fundamentals ● Evidence of successful mentorship or teaching at the college level and of potential for success in a research institution ● Ability to teach design principles and theories in graphic design courses focused on dynamic media and digital platforms, and a range of design ideation, materials, and methods ● Record of engagement in contemporary design communities or emerging media practices adjacent to design ● Appreciation for the inter-and cross-disciplinary nature of design, valuing collaboration, engaging in design across various media and platforms. ● Familiarity with inclusive pedagogies, issues related to unconscious bias in design, and/or accessible design ● Research and professional practice that addresses issues relevant to promotion of just societies, sustainability, and future methodologies of visual communication ● Research and pedagogical focus in any of the following areas: human-centered or user experience design; mobile and/or emergent technologies; UX/UI design; interactive or motion design; design strategy, research, history, theory, and criticism; service design or community engagement; generative design and data visualization; or speculative technologies such as VR, AR or AI The search committee will begin to review applications on April 9, 2021, and will continue until the position is filled.     Athens Campus Athens Campus Introduction The University of Georgia is centered around the town of Athens, located approximately 60 miles northeast of the capital of Atlanta, Georgia. The University was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on January 25, 1785, as the first state-chartered and supported college in the United States. The campus began to take physical form after a 633-acre parcel of land was donated for this purpose in 1801. The university’s first building—Franklin College, now Old College—was completed in 1806. Chace, I former president of Emory University, published an article in The American Scholar titled “The Decline of the English Department.” He began with the following observation: During the last four decades, a well-publicized shift in what undergraduate students prefer to study has taken place in American higher education.
