JOUR 321: Visual Journalism 2 Units Fall 2018 – Thursday 12:30 p.m. – 2:10 p.m. Section: 21171D Location: ANN 307 Instructor: David Matorin Office Hours: Thursdays, 2:10-3:10 p.m. and by arrangement. Contact Info: [email protected]; [email protected]; 917.710.1660 Course Description Students will gain an understanding of visual journalism through theory and practical application while exploring current and emerging story forms. Students will learn video for digital platforms, principles of photography, design for web and mobile platforms, and the roles each play in interactive and engaging storytelling. An emphasis will be placed on narrative, documentary-style video and visual stories for web and social media. Students also will learn elements of design related to typography, layout, engagement and user interface as they apply to journalistic story forms across platforms. Social media will also be an integral outlet for photo and video stories. In addition to providing you with skills necessary to produce journalistic multimedia stories, including videos and audio slideshows, we will also cover an introduction to principles of digital news design, interactivity and presentation. Ethical, legal and social issues affecting visual journalists will be discussed. We will take a practical, hands-on approach in this class. An introduction to photo, audio and video editing software will be provided. A modern mobile device or tablet device with a camera such as the iPhone 7 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S8, will be used as a primary content gathering device in the class. The device, mobile apps (shooting, editing and special purpose) and additional equipment are also major topics addressed during the course. -

WINNERSdateline OF THE OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB AWARDS 2011 Wanting, Not Waiting 2012 Another Year of Uprisings SPECIAL EDITION dateline 2012 1 letter from the president ne year ago, at our last OPC Awards gala, paying tribute to two of our most courageous fallen heroes, I hardly imagined that I would be standing in the same position again with the identical burden. While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary. -

The Voices of NPR
Episode 11 – Michael Goldfarb – All Along the Watchtower The Voices of NPR And now a personal word, Michael Goldfarb has the voice of a journalist who has witnessed important events. He speaks with weariness and authority. His voice evokes a chorus of NPR announcers who report from near and distant places. Writer Dierdre Mask noted in an article in the Atlantic magazine, “We can’t see NPR reporters, so we have to picture them. And because they are with us in our most private moments—alone in the car, half-asleep in bed—we start to think we know them.” And we do think we know them. Their voices are iconic: distinct, informative, comforting, familiar. Their voices are the sounds of our better selves when we are bright and learned and engaged in the affairs of the world. No matter the day’s events, they give us hope that in a crazy world, sense and sensibility will prevail. Here are a few names I grew up with: Susan Stamberg, Bob Edwards, Carl Kasell, Noah Adams, Linda Wertheimer, Robert Siegel, Scott Simon, Cokie Roberts, and Bob Mondello. Each name evokes a voice, a style, a beat, that is the news soundtrack of our lives and shared imagination. We hear their stories as they report from bureaus from foreign capitals: Eleanor Beardsley, Paris; Rob Gifford, London; Ofiebea Quist-Arcton, Dakar; and, of course, Sylvia Poggioli, Rome. We hear war correspondents in the thick of battle: Michael Golfarb in Northern Ireland and Bosnia; Kelly McEvers in the midst of death and kidnapping in the Arab Spring, Tom Bowman among the fire and mortars of Helmand Province, and David Gilkey ambushed and killed by the Taliban. -

According to Breneman, several faculty members have recently received national and international recognition for their work. These faculty members include Dr. Chulsung Bae who received a $2.2 million grant as a part of an ARPA-E effort to overcome current battery and fuel cell limitations. In addition, Dr. Heng Ji was invited to join the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council and Dr. Fran Berman was confirmed by the U.S. Sen- ate to serve on the National Council of the Humanities. Six new faculty members have also recently joined the Rensselaer School of Science in the fields of Computer Science, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Mathematical Sciences. In future expansions, Breneman plans to focus on diver- sity and inclusion in recruiting both faculty members and prospective students. The School of Science also hopes to attract diverse groups to science and focus on expanding student retention and graduation rates by 2020 through Brookelyn Parslow/The Polytechnic SPEAKER VISITS RPI campus for discussion about sex, love, and relationships. -

Nevertheless, he made occasional trips to a North Side bar, Berlin, where he could be "outrageously out." Adding to his stress at the time was the ending of his parents' marriage. They divorced when he was seventeen. At eighteen Savage disclosed his sexual orientation to his family, who, he stated, "became, after one rocky summer, aggressively supportive." Despite his family's eventual acceptance of his homosexuality, Savage wanted to get away from Chicago; so he decided to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana for college. -
