  • Knuckle Curve Pitcher on Mound Former MLB Umpire Ron Luciano on Knucklers
“That ____ Eaton Pitch” ‐uttered by numerous opponents over the years in regard to Eaton’s knuckle curveball, with various derogatory terms used to fill in the blank Numerous Reds’ pitchers, after tremendous high school careers that culminated in being drafted by MLB teams, had great success with their knuckle curves in college and the pros. Above: Kyle Ottoson starts in Game 3 of Super Regionals for Arizona State vs. Texas and leaves the game with the lead, and Shane Dyer’s first of many baseball cards (rising all the way to Triple‐A) show his knuckle curve grip. Coach Danley learned the knuckle curve from a pitcher* at Oklahoma State in the late 1980’s, researched it, taught it, and embraced it fully, and went on to win 20 of the Reds’ 21 spring and summer state titles with the victorious Reds’ pitcher throwing the knuckle curve. While the pitch breaks down sharply like a curve ball, it has no curve ball spin or potentially damaging elbow torque like a curve ball, and so the name of the pitch is misleading. With this in mind, maybe what the Reds’ opponents called the pitch was a much better description: “that ____ Eaton pitch.” The Reds were frankly honored by the term, but more honored by the swings and misses (and sometimes quite ugly ones at that) at the pitch. The knuckle curve and Eaton’s Championship Years are so intertwined it would be redundant to other material on EatonBaseball.com to focus an entire story on the pitch, however as one example of its dominance, the Reds in the 2008 State Championship found themselves clinging to a 3‐1 lead with the opponent loading up the bases with no outs, at which point the Reds threw 9 straight knuckle curves, producing 9 straight strikes, and ending the inning and effectively the game.

  • Reinventing a Once Fallen Hero By: Austin Rader
Reinventing A Once Fallen Hero By: Austin Rader July 19, 2019 — In the late 20th century, America’s pastime had hit a low point. The 1994 strike was still on everyone’s mind. Attendance was down; TV ratings were dipping. And fan bases were leaving for faster paced sports. Major League Baseball was desperately hoping for a generational talent to help re-invigorate its fans similar to Michael Jordan in basketball. The Beginning In 1996, a 21 year old Alex Rodriguez from Tampa, Florida, the greatest prospect the game has ever seen, took center stage as the shortstop for the Seattle Mariners. And boy did he provide the spark that baseball needed. The smooth shortstop could hit for power effortlessly sending balls into the seats. He could also make jaw-dropping plays in the field. A cool part of the A-Rod story in the MLB is who he played the game with; in Seattle his teammates included future hall of famers Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, and Randy Johnson. The young A-Rod was able to learn from all of these greats. Especially Edgar Martinez who taught him the mental side of hitting and what his approach should be on each pitch. “One of the toughest phone calls I ever made was calling Edgar to tell him I was signing with the Texas Rangers,” Rodriguez once stated. Fall From Grace We all know what happened next. After an NLCS loss to the Yankees in 2000, A-Rod signed the biggest contract in sports history at the time (10 year $252 million) with the Texas Rangers.

  • Edgar Martinez: Praise from His Peers
EDGAR MARTINEZ: PRAISE FROM HIS PEERS EDGAR deserves to be in [the Hall of Fame]…he was one of the most feared hitters in the game for “10-plus years. – Ken” Griffey Jr., HOF ‘16 EDGAR MARTINEZ is, hands down, the best hitter that I’ve ever seen…he is the best pure hitter that I“ got to see on a nightly basis. And I hope that his time comes soon, that he gets a phone call stating that he’s a Hall of Fame player, because he is. – Randy Johnson, HOF ‘15 ” I remember when I was coming up, I used to watch a guy like EDGAR hit and I was like, ‘This is ridicu- “lous’…He’s a .312 career hitter. When you’re a career .312 hitter at this level, that means you pretty much The toughest – and thank God he retired – EDGAR got everything down. • Tommy John, MLB Pitcher and Hall of Fame Candidate
Historical Overview Committee National Baseball Hall of Fame 25 Main Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 Re: Tommy John, MLB Pitcher and Hall of Fame Candidate Dear Members of the Historical Overview Committee, I am writing to you today to seek your support for the election of Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John to the National Baseball Hall of Fame under the rules and election parameters of the Historical Overview Committee and as a Modern Baseball Era Hall of Fame candidate. On June 12, 1939 then Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis provided the dedicatory address for the National Baseball Museum and the Baseball Hall of Fame. During this dedicatory address Commissioner Landis stated “I should like to dedicate this museum to all America: to lovers of good sportsmanship, healthy body, team mind. For those are the principles of baseball.”i I write to you today to firmly state that Tommy John dedicated himself to Baseball and both embodies and personifies the very words of Commissioner Landis. Tommy John lived “the principles of baseball” over a 26 year professional baseball career, always demonstrating good sportsmanship and a team focused mind, ending his illustrious 26-year career which I’ll address below, with a “healthy body” by being a pioneer and risktaker as the first recipient of the career saving “Tommy John surgery”. Tommy John IS baseball, and he will forever be linked to Baseball for his career performance and his pioneer status for a surgery in which “five hundred or so major leaguers have had since 1974, with virtually all games — more than 85% — now involving at least one pitcher who has had the surgery.”ii As highlighted above, Tommy John had a highly successful Major League career spanning 26-years, 26 years (only Nolan Ryan, who is a member of the Hall of Fame, pitched more years than Tommy John), finishing his career at the age of 46 (oldest active MLB player that season) with a 288 win record - the third-most wins of anyone not in Cooperstown and as the all-time leader for "no- decisions".

  • September 2015
Honoring and Preserving the Sports History of Chautauqua County 15 West Third Street, Jamestown, NY 14701 September 2015 From Jamestown To Cooperstown 263 major league baseball players have once called Jamestown, NY their baseball home – and now 2 of them reside in the cross-state village of Cooperstown. Nellie Fox, a member of the 1944 Jamestown Falcons, was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. Randy Johnson, a player on the 1985 Jamestown Expos, who stands over a foot taller than the diminutive Fox, was inducted into baseball’s shrine on July 26, 2015. Matt Spielman, assistant sports editor of The Post-Journal, took a look at the career of Johnson in a January 11, 2015 story that follows. Post-Journal sports editor Scott Kindberg contributed to this report. Tim Johnson, grandson of CSHOF inductee Nelson Turnell, was at the Cooperstown induction ceremony and provided the three photos of Johnson that accompany Spielman’s article. Big Unit’s Ride To The Hall Began At College Stadium In the summer of 1985, Bob Gebhard, Montreal Expos farm system director, told the front office staff of the Jamestown Expos that a highly touted prospect named Randy Johnson would be pitching for the New York-Penn League franchise that summer. Jeff Brucculeri, a 1982 Jamestown High School graduate who was serving as an assistant to General Manager Frank Wren that year before heading to Oral Roberts University in the fall, thought he would get a close-up look at the Expos' "new toy" in the bullpen during a two- week camp leading into the season.
