04 01 Mission

The University of Tokyo aims to be a world-class platform for research and education, contributing to human knowledge in partnership with other leading global universities.

The University of Tokyo aims to nurture global leaders with a strong sense of public responsibility and a pioneering spirit, possessing both deep specialism and broad knowledge.

The University of Tokyo aims to expand the boundaries of human knowledge in partnership with society.

The University of Tokyo and Todai In English we are known as the University of Tokyo and in Japanese as Tokyo Daigaku (東京大学), which literally translated is“ Tokyo University.” In Japanese, however, compound words are often abbreviated to just the first character of each component. Abbreviating Tokyo Daigaku leaves Todai (東大), which is how most people refer to us in Japan. In 2013, the University of Tokyo announced that the abbreviated English name of the University would be UTokyo.
