The University of Tokyo and Todai In English we are known as the University of Tokyo and in Japanese as Tokyo Daigaku (東京大学), which literally translated is“ Tokyo University.” In Japanese, however, compound words are often abbreviated to just the ﬁrst character of each component. Abbreviating Tokyo Daigaku leaves Todai (東大), which is how most people refer to us in Japan. In 2013, the University of Tokyo announced that the abbreviated English name of the University would be UTokyo.
