The application of water on fire is a direct action that allows us to meet our goals and produce a successful outcome for those in danger during a fire. A competent and well-organized deployment of fire hose is essential. Any number of firefighters, in any combination, must be able to work in concert to make the appropriate hose lays quickly. The hose laying operation is often the most visible part of our job at a fire. Effective and coordinated execution gives the public a positive perception of our department and its members. This section contains the information and techniques necessary for the loading and deployment of both supply and attack lines used in the Seattle Fire Department. These are among the most basic of firefighting skills and the foundation upon which all hose operations are built. A diligent study of these concepts will aid in the development of the necessary confidence needed to work with a first-line team.
