I would have been a fool to turn that down, but it opened a can of worms and I’m glad I went back to riding. I’ve done it a little bit different, been a lot more selective. I was one of those guys who went at it harder than anybody. I averaged a thousand races a year for 30 years. I rode my first official races in 1984 when I was 16 and I rode just part-time at small tracks close to home through high school. Since the summer of ’86, it’s been non-stop racetrack ever since and I went at it hard. I rode every race I could. I rode everything that had hair on it – Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas. I rode Thoroughbreds too. Why are you involved in the Guild? The older I get the more I appreciate what they did when they started it. This We’ve got those! game’s been really good to me. I’ve made as much money as I can make, so I felt the need to try to give back. One way I’ve tried is the time and effort I’ve put in with the Guild. I’ve tried to make the small things better for the next generation. Johnny has done a phenomenal job with those too. A lot of the issues we face are the exact same that caused the creation of the guild back in 1940. The primary issues are better working conditions, better pay, better insurance, better safety. The work we do to improve them can’t be underestimated. Back in those days, the young riders rode with contracts where someone was trying to own them. They were stepping out there to break that mold. They were outcasts then, they suffered repercussions from it. The forebearers are the ones that stick their necks out there and I admire them. Our reputation precedes us, now let it include you... What Thoroughbred jockeys do you relate to? Pat Costello Mike Smith has that nailed down. He’s from where I’m riding now, Ruidoso in New (859) 621-7764 Mexico. Thoroughbred racing fans have seen Frankie Dettori’s flying dismount, ACCESSORIES but you’re known for something even more daring. How did the backflip come to be? • I took gymnastic classes from third to eighth grade and I was pretty decent for a young kid. In junior rodeos and things, I’d do a backflip off my roping horse sometimes. I won a race in 1988 at Blue Ribbon Downs and the guy that led the • horse up had seen me do it off the rodeo horses. He started on me, ‘We win this photo, you gotta do a flip off this mare.’ I said no, not off a racehorse. Finally I told him, ‘Sure why not?’ Well, they put up our number and I did it. The crowd reacted to it and it was amazing. The only time I did it was for a big race. I got older and started not doing it so much, but I hear the kids say, ‘Ohhhh, he didn’t do the flip.’ It got to be my identity a little bit but I don’t do it as much anymore. If I win the All American
