He has carried around his phone with him during pre-game activities, watched the Cubs game from a chair in the clubhouse with it in his hand, and he joked that he would play with it in his pocket if possible. It's not. And that's not just because he's not playing today. Diaz and Stephen Piscotty are not in the lineup today, though both are present at the ballpark. (Dismiss the earlier mention that Diaz could be away on paternity leave; he could be at any time, just isn't it.) Manager Mike Matheny said both of his first-year, full-time starters are getting a break because "they've been pushing." Piscotty had a complete day off Friday, and he did not expect to touch bat. "Today is a good work day," Matheny said. The manager allowed that Piscotty's rash of strikeouts in the past week could be a product of exhaustion. Like Diaz, Piscotty has not played this much ever before at this high of a level. Avoiding fatigue is the reason both are not in the lineup for Saturday's game, Matheny said. *** For first time in his career, lefty Garcia gives short rest a go As many things as Jaime Garcia has done in his time with the Cardinals -- flirted with no-hitters, tripped in the postseason, rehabbed vigorously -- against the Marlins on Saturday night he'll try something new. He's going to start on short rest. The lefthander, coming off a five-inning outing Tuesday in Queens, will make the first start of his career on fewer than four days of rest. The Cardinals will have Jerome Williams ready to handle any extra innings should Garcia falter. Should Garcia excel, he will have helped the Cardinals beat the schedule as much as the Marlins. Two doubleheaders in the span of seven days forced the Cardinals to twice rethink their rotation and once go to a prospect who was not yet ready for the majors. The Cardinals planned ahead a bit this time before eventually siding with the starter they already had in the rotation instead of a new one. Garcia got the nod. He'll try to push the Cardinals winning streak to four games and increase their lead in the wild-card race to two games ahead of the chasing Marlins. The Cardinals moved ahead of them with a win Friday night. Aledmys Diaz left the ballpark Friday night knowing there was a possibility he'd become a father in the near future. He could be on placed on paternity leave as soon as today, pending the birth of his child. His wife is in West Palm Beach, Fla., with his family, so he was able to make the short drive home Friday night. Ichiro Suzuki, two shy of 3,000 hits, is not in the Marlins lineup. Stephen Piscotty, who is getting what he agreed was a reset, is not in the Cardinals lineup for the second consecutive day. Neither is Jeremy Hazelbaker. Randal Grichuk comes out of dry dock to start in right. Here's the lineup: 1. Greg Garcia, SS 2. Jedd Gyorko, 3B 3. Matt Holliday, LF 4. Matt Adams, 1B 5. Yadier Molina, C 6. Tommy Pham, CF 7. Kolten Wong, 2B 8. Randal Grichuk, RF 9. Jaime Garcia, P Check back throughout the evening here at C-Beat and StlToday.com for news as it happens and game action and perhaps a limerick or two. 1027337 St Louis Cardinals Moving Garcia up backfires as Cards fall 11-0 to Marlins Derrick Goold MIAMI • By the time Jaime Garcia readied to throw the 16th pitch of his unexpected start Saturday, the Cardinals were already pondering the pitching decision they could have made in the first place. Throwing on short rest for the first time in his career, Garcia allowed two doubles and a before he got the second out of the first inning. Miami cruised from there for an 11-0 thrashing of the Cardinals that was over as quickly as it started. Soon after Marcell Ozuna’s two-run homer cleared the Marlins Park fence for Miami’s swift, four-run lead, the Cardinals had Tyler Lyons warming up. He was about to enter a game he wasn’t chosen to start. The Cardinals and manager Mike Matheny decided, instead, to have Garcia do what he never had and watched the Marlins feast for six runs and a romp against the lefty. Questioned about whether the team avoided simpler alternatives to push Garcia, the manager called that “easy” criticism. “We made a decision early on,” Matheny said. “We have five guys that we like to start. And we take everything into consideration, and when there’s a short start we talk to the guys and get their input whether that’s something they would like to do or not. It’s just easy, man. It’s just easy to look at it now. Our backs are against the wall. We start Tyler and it doesn’t look good, then we’re talking right now why we didn’t short-rest Jaime and start him. That’s how it goes.” The Cardinals had won four of the first five games on the road trip and bounded ahead of the Mets and Marlins in the wild-card race in just four days. What had been a stretch with some of their best baseball hit a pothole Saturday with some of their worst tendencies. An error led to three runs as reliever Jerome Williams shouldered the leftover innings. The Cardinals managed scant offense and they mangled other elements of the game. Lyons’ abbreviated appearance in relief meant at one point the Cardinals switched out their cleanup hitter in exchange for only two outs of relief. The first 15 pitches from Garcia put them behind. It got worse from there. Matheny took issue with “ugly” as an adjective to call the shutout. “I wouldn’t say overall ugliness,” Matheny said. “It didn’t go the way we wanted from the beginning and then it was just a matter of trying to survive.” The voluntary risk the Cardinals took with Garcia momentarily cost them an opportunity they had not had in months. Hours before first pitch, many of the Cardinals watched intently as new Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman squandered a lead in the eighth inning at Wrigley. The Cubs would lose the game and allow the Cardinals to move within 5 ½ games of the division leaders with a win. The Cardinals had not been that close to first place since the end of April. A win would have also doubled the distance between the Cardinals and the Marlins for the second wild card. The Marlins’ drubbing moved them into a tie with the Cardinals, at 56-48. Although Matheny suggested he would have faced questions about not starting Garcia, the lefty going on short rest didn’t appear to be an option until he was announced as the starter. Four days removed from his Tuesday start, he would go three days earlier than originally scheduled. In preparing this past Tuesday’s doubleheader at Citi Field, the team had expressed a preference to start Lyons, and top prospect Alex Reyes had even been removed early from a start as “insurance” should Lyons be unavailable. The chain of events that led to Garcia (7-8) starting stretched back to the first of the Cardinals’ two doubleheaders in seven days. The Cardinals had intended to start Lyons on July 24. But he was needed for an extra-inning game two days before and was thus unavailable. The Cardinals considered turning to Reyes or Class AA starter Luke Weaver, but neither was available. Up came Mike Mayers. He didn’t survive two innings, and the Cardinals lost. Once bitten, twice shy, the Cardinals sought to avoid another post-doubleheader scramble, but while they had two available options they elected to go with Garcia. That would free up Lyons to pitch in relief Thursday or Friday if needed — and he wasn’t. It also would leave Reyes, for the time being, at Class AAA Memphis. They approached Garcia with the idea. “I was willing to do that,” Garcia said. “I made the decision to go out there, and I made the decision to take the ball and go out there and I was good enough to compete. No excuse.” Garcia’s first pitch was laced for a leadoff double by Dee Gordon. Two batters later, Christian Yelich doubled home Gordon, and on Garcia’s 12th pitch of the game Giancarlo Stanton brought home Yelich with a single. Three pitches later, Ozuna had the homer that offered the scoreboard referendum on the Cardinals’ decision. Garcia did settle in before two more doubles opened the fourth inning. Five of the seven hits he allowed went for extra bases. Lyons entered and didn’t fare better. He allowed a two-run double after walking the first batter he faced. The double switch that brought Lyons into the game removed cleanup hitter Matt Adams, who had experienced a back spasm. By the middle innings, the Cardinals would be without their cleanup hitter and No. 5 hitter. They didn’t have two hits in the same inning until the eighth. The Marlins debuted new starter Colin Rea on Saturday, a day after acquiring him and Sunday starter Andrew Cashner from San Diego to fortify their rotation for a wild-card run. Rea’s start may have been more problematic than Garcia’s because the Marlins righthander left with an elbow issue after 3 1/3 innings. Hazelwood West High grad David Phelps (5-5) pitched 2 2/3 innings of emergency relief that allowed the Marlins to extend their lead. The game had a fitting finish for the Cardinals in the ninth. The first two batters reached, getting a runner in scoring position with no outs. Not one of the next three batters moved him even 90 feet. “It was one of those games when you’re really knocked on your heels, and you’re kind of trying to put together tough at-bats,” Matheny said. “Our guys — it’s been noted — are as good as anybody at scoring a lot of runs. You’re going to have nights where you can’t put it together. This is one of them.” St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.31.2016

1027338 St Louis Cardinals Peralta looks for role upon return Derrick Goold MIAMI • Veteran shortstop Jhonny Peralta joined the Cardinals on Saturday for pre-game workouts, as planned, so that he can return from the disabled list Tuesday when he’s eligible. What role he returns to is less certain. “We’ll just wait and see when we get there,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Hopefully he can just get into game-timing. That’s going to be the challenge.” While Peralta, 34, has been on the disabled list for the second time this season with a thumb injury, the Cardinals have been able to get solid production from Jedd Gyorko and Greg Garcia at third base. Gyorko in a part-time role has 14 homers, while Peralta hit five in his first 30 games back while batting .221 with a .258 on- base percentage. Peralta and Brandon Moss (ankle) are set to return from the DL on Tuesday, and Matt Carpenter (oblique) is scheduled to be active by Friday. While Moss and Carpenter will return to the roles they left, Peralta’s will be less clear, defined as much by his production as the success of others in his absence. “I don’t know what the expectations are — this is a high-level producer for a long time,” Matheny said. “The guy knows how to hit. It’s just a matter of getting a good feel at the plate. … We’ll figure out how it all comes together and how we plug them in when we get there.” Peralta went on the disabled list earlier this month after experiencing persisting soreness in his left thumb. He felt it most on swings and misses, he said, and while the pain was on the other side of the thumb from the surgery the doctor told him they were related. Yadier Molina, who had a similar surgery on both hands, cautioned Peralta that he might feel symptoms throughout the season. Peralta said he understands there may be soreness that he has to play through yet. Peralta took groundballs and batting practice at Marlins Park on Saturday, and the Cardinals intend for him to go through the same workouts Sunday. He has told the team he does not want to go on a rehab assignment. General manager said it’s possible Peralta would face Lance Lynn on Monday when the righthander faces hitters in a live batting practice session in Jupiter, Fla. That’s being discussed. “The hand doesn’t feel 100 percent,” Peralta said. “I don’t think about my hand. That’s what I hope — to come back and do the best I can do.” DIAZ, PISCOTTY CATCH A BREAK Rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz joked that he might try to play with his cell phone in his back pocket just in case someone calls with the news his wife is in labor. Diaz is awaiting the birth of he and his wife’s first child, and it could happen while he’s a quick drive away from their West Palm Beach, Fla., home. He cannot take the phone on the field with him during a game, and didn’t have to Saturday as he and fellow first-year starter Stephen Piscotty got a day off. For Piscotty, it was his second consecutive day out of the lineup – a move he agreed was like a reboot after a difficult week. Matheny said he’s trying to avoid fatigue for starting stalwarts. Diaz “has been going hard, and same with Stephen,” Matheny said. “Both of them are young players that have been going at it pretty good and they need a break when we can get it for them. You could easily forget it just because they’ve been so good and they’ve been so consistent. They have a more mature approach to how they’re going about it.” Piscotty is the only Cardinal to have played more than 800 innings this season; he has 820 1/3 innings in the field in 91 starts. Diaz is second on the team with 790 innings, and the only other Cardinal with as many as 655 innings of fielding is catcher Yadier Molina. Diaz struck out three times in Friday’s game and Piscotty had back-to-back three strikeout games earlier in the week. Matheny said fatigue couldn’t be dismissed as a reason. He called Friday a good “shutdown day” for Piscotty. Saturday was a “good work day,” the manager said. REPLAY BY COMMITTEE At one point during Friday’s game, umpire crew chief John Hirschbeck got Matheny’s attention and “mimed” an acknowledgement that his group got a call wrong in Thursday’s game. Before the Cardinals opened up a lead on Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, a balk call that would have resulted in a run was overturned by an impromptu meeting of the crew. A balk could not be reviewed via replay, so the umpires took the chance to caucus about the call. It’s the second memorable time that the Cardinals have had a call that benefits them overturned without the use of replay — but just a meeting on the field of umpires. The last time, in the 2013 World Series, the umpires got the call correct after their discussion. Replay, had they been able to use it, would have made both calls correct. “I wasn’t in favor of it the other day. I wasn’t in favor of it during the World Series either,” Matheny said. “To me, if they’ve got to do that they’re already taking time – go and get (the replay). The information is there. The technology is there. So make the most of it instead of taking more educated guess. Why not get more information?” St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.31.2016

1027339 St Louis Cardinals Ortiz: Cards' should be trade-deadline buyers, bullpen in need Jose de Jesus Ortiz The pretenders have already started to unload. Contenders like the Cubs and Nationals are busy fortifying their rosters with a focus on deep playoff runs. The Cubs and Nationals have the two best records in the majors, and the smart money is on one of those teams winning the National League pennant. Don’t discount the Cardinals, though. If there was any doubt whether general manager John Mozeliak had a contender, Yadier Molina and Co. delivered a clear message in the final week before the non-waiver trade deadline. By winning two of three against the Mets at Citi Field before taking the first two against the Marlins at Marlins Park, the Cardinals moved into sole possession of the second NL wild card Friday. They enter Sunday’s series finale in Miami having won nine of their last 13 games. The Cubs still have a decent lead in the NL Central, but it doesn’t seem insurmountable for the Cardinals with 58 games remaining. Molina, Aledmys Diaz, Jedd Gyorko and Matt Adams have done their part to rally the Cardinals heading into the trade deadline, buying Mozeliak some much- needed time until All-Star Matt Carpenter, Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta return from the disabled list. “I feel like when you look at this club, the everyday club is coming around,” Mozeliak said. “Plus you’re likely going to get Moss, Peralta and Carpenter back all in the first week of August. When you look at potential upgrades on position players it’s going to be very hard to add a more impactful player than what you’re getting back from the DL. “Then when you look at our rotation, that’s been very solid. And clearly I think our bullpen gets beat up a little bit, but it’s probably performed as well as anybody over the last six or seven weeks. I feel like when you say, ‘What can you go out and do to improve?’ you can always find some level of an upgrade. But then you have to ask yourself the acquisition cost and what you’re having to give up to get it, is it worth it?” Here are a few other important questions: Can the Cardinals afford not to make a deal? Can the Cardinals afford not to upgrade the bullpen? How much of Trevor Rosenthal’s problems have been mental more than the right-shoulder discomfort that landed him on the disabled list? If Rosenthal’s struggles were physical, can he regain his health in time to regain Mike Matheny’s trust and help the Cardinals? Those Rosenthal questions are nearly impossible to answer at this point. The other two questions are easy. The Cardinals cannot afford to stand pat. Although Mozeliak rightfully suggests that his bullpen has performed better than its reputation lately, he still needs to improve it. To be clear, it won’t be cheap. “All I’m going to say it’s clearly a seller’s market and every club is going through their own arbitrage about what they feel is best for them,” Mozeliak said. The Pirates, who were only three games behind the Cardinals in the wild-card race entering Saturday’s action, sent All-Star closer Mark Melancon to the NL East- leading Nationals. The Nationals were eager to land Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees, but the Cubs beat them to the hard-throwing lefthander earlier in the week. The Cubs sent the Yankees their top prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres, and three other players for Chapman, who blew his first save in Chicago on Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Mariners. The Cubs paid a steep price for a guy who wants to test free agency after the season. That’s the cost these days for a premier closer. Every true baseball fan will tell you it has been 108 years since the Cubs won their last World Series. The Cardinals aren’t nearly as desperate. They have won 11 World Series titles overall, including the last one in 2011. Regular season dominance or struggles don’t mean much in the postseason. If you don’t believe me, check to see how the 100-win 2015 Cardinals did and how the 83-win Cardinals fared in 2006 after tumbling backward into the playoffs. If the Cardinals had stumbled against the Mets and Marlins on this road trip, nobody could have blamed Mozeliak if he joined the sellers at the trade deadline. “I think it’s great that we’re playing better baseball,” Mozeliak said. “I feel like we’ve always felt like this club was going to be competitive, but I feel like if you’re simply using the timing of the last 10 days and decide how you’re going to think about the trade deadline, I feel like that might be too small of a sample size. “Again, I feel it’s a tougher club to go out and necessarily just say there’s one thing that you have to do. The fact that for the most part our team is playing better, I think that’s just a great sign.” After going 12-13 in June, the Cardinals are 16-10 this month. Carpenter, Moss and Peralta will strengthen what already is a team strength. Now it’s Mozeliak’s turn to match the Cubs or at least counter by improving the bullpen with another late-inning arm. “I always see this time of year as one of those times that you can be opportunistic,” Mozeliak said. “There’s decisions that can be made that can have short-term gains and there’s decisions that can be made that can have long-term gains. “Sometimes the best decision you make is the one when you do nothing. There is no perfect answer here, but it’s to understand what each arbitrage may look like.” St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.31.2016

1027340 St Louis Cardinals Goold: A St. Louisan has a hand in the Hall, baseball history in his hand Derrick Goold COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. • He doesn’t remember the exact street in University City where fortune intersected with baseball and sent him in this direction. It was near Flynn Park Elementary, sometime in the 1970s, and Tom Shieber was walking toward home when he saw a baseball – discarded? misplaced? – abandoned along the road. The ball was covered in signatures, actual autographs, not the printed scrawls available at every team store. This ball had been held by the men who signed it, and Tom, in elementary at the time, recognized a few of the names. . Joe DiMaggio. There were far more that he didn’t – Frankie Frisch, for one – and so, with the help of his dad he pulled the family copy of The Sporting News’ “Daguerreotypes” and leafed through the photos of baseball greats to line up the facts with the names. “Little by little,” Shieber said this past week. “That was the beginning.” It wasn’t just the ball itself, but the research that intrigued Shieber. That ball acted as a key that unlocked many pursuits, ones that would take him from St. Louis to Reed College, from the West Coast to the East Coast, up a mountain near Los Angeles, down Main Street in Cooperstown, and from studying the sun to mixing with baseball’s stars. Whether it’s the Cardinals or the Bucks, Max Scherzer or The Sporting News, St. Louis has had a hand in making, calling, and covering baseball history. Shieber is the St. Louis native who has his hand on it. As senior curator for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, a position he’s had for a decade, Shieber oversees its vast collection and harvests the artifacts that illustrate the game’s history throughout the museum and, soon, will be coming to a parking lot or library near you. Not everyone can get to remote Cooperstown, so the Hall is looking for ways to take Cooperstown on the road, to strengthen its outreach mission. A traveling “baseball experience” will arrive at Ballpark Village in St. Louis in late August, and Shieber helped select the best items for the tour, including the final Cardinals cap worn in a game by Musial. This past week, Shieber returned home to St. Louis to continue work on what would be the first-of-its-type cooperative exhibit: a trip into the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry as only the Hall can offer but housed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill. While not yet finalized, the hope is to have the collection open in March 2017, just as the two archrivals are set to play each other on opening day at . “I think it’s a remarkable thing,” Shieber said when asked about St. Louis’ roots reaching throughout the game. “Maybe it was KMOX or having The Sporting News. I try to be objective about it. I’m not sure I can totally explain it. I just like reveling in it.” A week ago, during Induction Weekend in Cooperstown, Shieber led a small group on a private tour of the halls behind the Hall, where most of the 40,000 physical items in Cooperstown are kept, awaiting their turn in a display case or on tour. Before showing the group Ted Williams’ bat and Lou Gehrig’s mitt, Shieber pulled out a large scrapbook, one painstakingly kept by Gehrig’s wife. He opened it to show clippings from Gehrig’s final day on the field and the quest that led to his ALS diagnosis. Beyond just the historical value of the newspaper clippings, Shieber used them as an example of his approach. Alone, the scrapbook is a static artifact, cool but without context. As a curator he aims to use it and other items in concert, to give resonance. He wants to tell a story. “When you look at an exhibit, it is a form of storytelling,” Shieber said. “It has a narrative. It has a plot line. There are twists and turns. Surprises, hopefully. And there’s education. All of these things happen when you see a movie or read a book, and what I hope happens when you walk out of an exhibit is the same thing. If you don’t have a story, what you have isn’t an exhibit. What you have is a display.” The theme of the Hall’s tour that will land in St. Louis from Aug. 26-Sept. 11, is “We Are Baseball.” Shieber said the thesis is how “everyone is connected to baseball by someone or some way.” There are about 45 artifacts in the exhibit, and they include the ball Babe Ruth hit for his 714th and final home run and the ball Hank Aaron hit for his 714th career home run to tie Ruth. A pair of Harry Caray’s glasses share the same exhibit with the glove used by Pete Gray, a one-armed outfielder for the St. Louis Browns. The tour’s arrival in St. Louis will also be a reunion, of sorts. For the first time since Game 6 of the 2011 World Series the two halves of David Freese’s jersey will be in the same city. The jersey was shredded by Nick Punto in the celebration after Freese’s walk-off home to force a Game 7. Half is on the display in the Cardinals’ Hall of Fame. The other half was given to Cooperstown. Shieber is working on the narrative backbone for the Cubs-Cardinals exhibit. He wants to celebrate “two storied franchises” and show how they intersect – and clash. Samuel Wheeler, named Illinois’ 10th state historian officially this past week, has been a research historian at the Lincoln library and borrowed from Lincoln to describe his view of the baseball tale they’re working to bring to Springfield, that Cards-Cubs battleground area: “A house divided.” He and Shieber met this past week to continue plotting the possible exhibit, which could be finalized in the coming weeks. “Tom comes from a nontraditional background for a museum person,” Wheeler said. “It’s really clear he knows how to get to the heart of what an exhibit needs to be.” “Tom comes from a nontraditional background for a museum person,” Wheeler said. “It’s really clear he knows how to get to the heart of what an exhibit needs to be.Historians, at heart, are researchers, and he, down deep, is a researcher who throws himself in.” He did with the baseball he found as a boy, and after graduating from John Burroughs in 1982 he did as a physics major in college. Shieber’s studies landed him a job studying the sun from the Mount Wilson observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains. It was a “half-hour to civilization,” he said, and 15 minutes from there to Dodger Stadium. When his object of study, the sun, set, Shieber headed to the ballpark. He was always close to a game, but it took moving to Cooperstown, some 4 ½ hours from any big-league park, to get closer to the game. Shieber started in 1998 at the Hall, working on its web site. During the home run craze of that summer, Shieber curated an online exhibit about the single-season home run record. He also learned the curious lexicon of Cooperstown. When looking for some information on brawls, he went to the library for clips. He couldn’t find anything filed under “Fights” or “Brawls.” A colleague steered him to the “R” files, for “Rhubarbs.” The Hall’s mission statement is captured in six words: “Preserving History. Honoring Excellence. Connecting Generations.” Shieber has those directives printed on a 1 ½ foot-by-2 ½ foot display within eyesight of his desk in Cooperstown. As he’s piecing together exhibits, looking for the narrative thread to tie items together, he glances at it and “grounds me, really grounds me.” Shieber is working on a new exhibit for the Hall that will explore amateur baseball, scouting, and the minor leagues. With that and the rivalry exhibit, he mines a database of the Hall’s collection for things that will fit, characters for his story. That search tickles the same curiosities he had with the ball he found, where “there are neat twists and turns that get you newly excited about an item.” In the Hall’s storage, with sanitary white gloves on, Shieber presents an example. It’s a silver cup, given to Hall of Famer Eddie Collins as a gift from his Columbia University teammates. The twist and the turn Shieber points out is that it was from a year Collins was ruled ineligible because he played semi-pro ball. “Eddie Collins held that trophy; it meant something to him,” he said. Just as Williams held the bat resting nearby the cup and Gehrig used that mitt. Enos Slaughter gave that autographed ball from an All-Star Game to Williams, and at one point an umpire used that ball-strike counter – the one with “5” for balls and “4” for strikes. In the same way a novelist has a keyboard, Shieber has this history at his fingertips to tell a story. And he still has that ball he found. With all the Hall at his disposal he intends to research the likely origin of his U-City treasure. He doesn’t know where it’s from. He just knows where it has taken him. “It’s quite a strange occurrence, right?” Shieber said. “Somebody lost a valuable ball. I think about what it meant to them, how they lost it. But little did they know that their loss would send me on this path to where I am now. That one ball. I’m thankful they lost that ball.” St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.31.2016

1027341 St Louis Cardinals McKenney and family join Cardinals clan Benjamin Hochman For those who love Willie and Wacha, entering the enchantment that is Busch Stadium feels like something dreamed up by Willy Wonka. “Everything was new,” said Sandra McKenney, who wandered among the wonderment before settling in her seat, taking in the breeze and processed nacho cheese. “It was a Sunday afternoon game against the Phillies, I’ll always remember it. … I didn’t move out of my seat the whole game. Didn’t want to miss anything.” Her first Cardinals game. June 15, 2008. The Scotland native came with Bruce. Karen was home with Heather. It was tied in the top of the ninth when catcher Yadier Molina was mauled, but held onto the ball. The bulldozing base runner was out at home; Yadi was out, too. “I’m on the phone to my daughter Karen,” Sandra recalled. “‘What are they saying, what’s wrong with Yadi?’” He suffered a concussion, left on a cart to applause. And as for the Cards? “We won that game in extra innings,” Sandra proudly said, the “we” catching my ear. “And I thought – we can bring Heather here. I’m sure she would enjoy it. “And that’s when we really got into it.” Sandra was born and raised in Greenock, an old ship-building town near Glasgow. She’d watch soccer – “Our football,” she said – with her dad but never knew baseball. She later fell in love with an American, an Air Force guy. Bruce. Met him at a bar. They stayed in touch with letters, visiting occasionally. They were married in ’85, embarking on a journey that took them to seven different homes, including in England and Germany, where Heather was born. “The bad times were in Germany with her,” Sandra said. “That’s where all the trouble started.” Born in 1996, Heather spent the first 10 months of her life in an Intensive Care Unit. She had a laryngeal cleft in her throat – and had a tracheostomy for six years, a feeding tube for seven. “Oh, it was numbing,” her mother recalled. “And then you just function, day-to-day, not knowing what she’s going to be like from one day to the next.” Did you think you might lose her? “Oh yeah. I think she came close.” Three surgical repairs didn’t take. A doctor suggested they go to America, and at a Philadelphia hospital, in 1999, Heather’s cleft was repaired. Heather is 19 now. She is special needs. She lives at home with Sandra and Bruce, in Mascoutah, near Scott Air Force Base. And here, in Cardinal Nation, the Scot soccer fan found therapy in baseball. “We go to about 25 games a year now,” Sandra said. “Heather goes – where we go, she goes. ... “I would say, from April to October, that’s what we live for. We love going down to the games. Opening day is always so special, being there with all the fans – it’s like there are no strangers. We’re all one big family. “It’s just good to see her enjoying it with everyone else. All of us, together.” ‘HOOKED’ ON BASEBALL Sandra turned 57 this year on July 13, the same day Yadi turned 34. Sandra sure loves No. 4, but her No. 1 is No. 13. Carp. When I first met Sandra, at a downtown coffee shop, she wore a Matt Carpenter 2013 World Series jersey — and a pin featuring Stan Musial’s No. 6. The family met Carpenter at the Winter Warm Up. Bruce knew the drill – Sandra and Heather go up to the player, Bruce takes the pictures. With Carp, though, Heather said to him: “My mom loves you and loves your walk-up music,” and sure enough, Heather started serenading him with “Long Hot Summer Days” by The Turnpike Troubadours. The three of them of course go to games in St. Louis, but they also take road trips, such as to Kansas City, though Sandra pointed out, “That was before they were good. I think it was 2009 and three quarters of the stadium was Cardinals red.” They’re looking into a Milwaukee trip. Heather excitedly blurted out that they should go to games in New York – and check out a toy fair while they’re there. (Incidentally, Heather also said she really wants to meet Demi Lovato, when the singer comes to St. Louis, to which I said: “Shoot, me too.”) The family flew to Florida in March for spring training, “And I loved it,” Sandra exclaimed. “I felt so close, you know? When we get tickets, we’re out in the 300 section. But down there, I felt so close.” Bruce admitted that Sandra knows way more about baseball than he does, that she’s “hooked.” Indeed, Sandra has more than 30 Cardinals shirts. She keeps score at the games – “I’m self-taught” – and appropriately utilizes the backwards K. They were in the stands for Matt Adams’ playoff homer against Clayton Kershaw – “It felt like an earthquake,” Sandra said – though her favorite game each year is the final regular-season game, because fans sing the national anthem. “I became a citizen two years ago,” said the Scot of the country that gave her Bruce and baseball, and that saved Heather. “I get goosebumps every time. I stand up with my hand on my heart.” CARDINALS ARE A FAMILY AFFAIR Sandra will be in the stands on Sept. 10. She and Bruce will be at a field in Decatur, Ill., for a state competition in the Special Olympics. This past week, Heather won gold in her division for softball skills, thus advancing to the next round. Heather also participates in golf, bowling and track and field. She’ll be 20 this year, but still able to be part of the special needs class at Mascoutah High School. “She’ll be there until she’s 22,” Sandra said. “And then, I don’t know.” Heather has an infectious smile. She loves Twitter. Her favorite Cardinal ever? “Albert,” she said. “Why did he have to leave? He could retire as a Cardinal.” Sandra has two other daughters, too – Sarah, who lives in South City, and Karen, who is now in Austin, Texas. Last summer, Sandra visited Karen down in Texas. They went to the bar where Karen worked. “The Cardinals were playing the Cubs at Wrigley,” Sandra recalled. “And it was the night Jhonny Peralta hit the home run in the ninth inning. And I’m there just yelling and screaming! And there were these two Astros fans at the end of the bar, and they’re going: ‘Cheat-er! Cheat-er!’ (In reference to the Cards-Astros hacking scandal).” When she watches the games at home, Sandra sits in the same spot, every time. There are two couches angled, and she sits on one, Bruce right beside her, but on the other. They each have laptops. Sometimes Heather comes in to watch, but other times she’s in the other room, playing on her iPad. “We have our seats, we get comfy, get the pregame on, and I’m watching Twitter,” Sandra said, in her distinct Scottish accent, pronouncing it Twit-ter. “I follow hundreds of Cardinals fans. I’ve actually met people from Twitter at Busch Stadium. We’ll meet at Ballpark Village.” Sandra loses herself in the game. She watches intently, until suddenly she can’t watch at all. “Depending how the game goes, sometimes I pace — in the kitchen,” she said. “I’ll go and just wait and hope they get the out.” And when they win, the enchantment of Cardinals baseball stirs her, once again.
