Although the novel was no where near the level of The Beach, it was still an interesting and gripping book. It cuts out half of the story line, has horrible shots, transitions and effects throughout the whole thing, makes no sense, is extremely disjointed, and has the most wooden acting I've seen since I The Tesseract annoyed that I spent good money renting this out, that could've been spent on more beer. There is an omnipresent ghost that hovers above it all, called Globalization, and this specter is felt everywhere: from the smallest villages of Thailand to The Tesseract most industrialized cosmopolitan cities of the U. This current feeling had been hinted at way before it even got here. Alex Garland The Tesseract a remarkable writer. Cohesiveness is found once all stories are put together, like a jigsaw puzzle. The Tesseract is a terrific Masterpiece. View all 3 comments. The Tesseract suffers from the case of the infamous sophomore jinx simply because it is in no way like Garland's fabulous debut novel The Beach. The voice is completely different. The Beach was linear, almost cinematic in The Tesseract, a rather conventional novel; The Tesseract is experimental, and the writing dry, sparse and moody. The novel is set in Manila, and through three separate, non-linear narratives it shows the story of three groups of people who would normally never met, but whom fate has co The Tesseract suffers from the case of the infamous sophomore jinx simply because it is in no way like Garland's fabulous debut novel The Beach. The novel is set in Manila, and through three separate, non-linear narratives it shows the story of three groups of people who would normally never met, but whom fate has connected in a most violent way. There are good bits in The Tesseractbut as a whole the novel falls rather short. The characters aren't particularly memorable and the concept of the tesseract is thrown in almost desperately, as a bit of novelty could shed an entirely new light on the familiar concept of the same incident being related by different people. Garland offers us a bunch of quick, skilfully drawn sketches The Tesseract fluently switches between them, much like Quentin Tarantino did The Tesseract Pulp Fiction. While not as spellbinding as The BeachThe Tesseract is fast paced and has its moments The Filipino love story, the man who buys dreams The Tesseract as a whole the novel feels like a concept that wasn't entirely fleshed out. It feels more like a transitional piece, of a writer in- developement, who has estabilished himself in one field and doesn't fear trying new things. It is sad that Garland seems to have abandoned writing novels The Tesseract now concentrates on adapting them for the screen. Maybe he only had one great work in him? The Tesseract unfortunately offers no answer. View all 13 comments. The Tesseract 19, Linna added it. It is a novel that balances science against religion, and our wills against our fates, asking The Tesseract ever-elusive question of how we can make sense of events in a world where meaning lies beyond our grasp. Feb 01, N. Another example of a book smothered with praise from high-profile names, yet totally failing to deliver anything but a kind of intellectual indigestion. And not from richness. What's wrong with it? I The Tesseract waste time copying it out. Let's just say it's bullshit. And totally unnecessary. If you have a good narrative and a good title, neither requires justification. Sadly The Tesseract lacks at The Tesseract the former. The story Another example of a book smothered with praise from high-profile names, yet totally failing to deliver anything but a kind of intellectual indigestion. The whole The Tesseract becomes laughably bad. Garlands utterly fails to make anything even vaguely The Tesseract or satisfying out of a premise that requires more intelligent handling to say something worthwhile. This feels like a very lazy way The Tesseract jam together a few short pieces and not have any better way to do it. But hey, let's stick a pretentious intro about a fancy The Tesseract on The Tesseract and The Tesseract nobody notices. I don't use it as shorthand for "tried to achieve greatness but failed", or "I don't get it so it must be crap". Sad to say this review needs it twice. It was a largely forgetful book. The protagonist, I think his name was Simon see? I can't even remember was bland. Every other character was bland too. Thankfully the Philippines was given some life in this book. Garland nicely described the scenery here, and he doesn't sugar coat it as to make it sound ridiculous. The plot was really dumb.
