Introduction to Transcendental Dynamics Christopher J. Bishop Department of Mathematics Stony Brook University Intentions Despite many previous opportunities and a brush with conformal dynamics in the form of Kleinian groups, I had never worked on the iteration of holomorphic functions until April 2011 when I met Misha Lyubich on the stairwell of the Stony Brook math building he told me that Alex Eremenko had a question for me. Alex was visiting for a few days and his question was the following: given any compact, connected, planar set K and an ǫ > 0, is there a polynomial p(z) with only two critical values, whose critical points approximate K to within ǫ in the Hausdorff metric? 1 It turns out that we can assume the critical values are 1 and then T = p− ([ 1, 1]) ± − is a finite tree in the plane and Alex’s question is equivalent to asking if such trees are dense in all compact sets. Such a tree is conformally balanced in the sense that every edge gets equal harmonic measure from and every subset of an edge gets ∞ equal harmonic measure from either side. This makes the existence of such trees seem unlikely, or at least requiring very special geometry, but I was able to show that Alex’s conjecture was correct by building an approximating tree that is balanced in a quasiconformal sense and then “fixing” it with the measurable Riemann mapping theorem. When I asked for the motivation behind the question, Alex explained that entire functions with a finite number of critical points play an important role in transcen- dental dynamics because they mimic certain properties of polynomials, e.g., Dennis Sullivan’s “no wandering domains” theorem can be extended to such functions. -

EUPHEM REPORT Summary of work activities Claudia Lucarelli European Public Health Microbiology Training Programme (EUPHEM) 2013 cohort Background According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) advisory group on public health microbiology (‘national microbiology focal points’), public health microbiology is a cross-cutting area that spans the fields of human, animal, food, water, and environmental microbiology, with a focus on human population health and disease. The primary work function is to use microbiology to improve the health of populations in collaboration with other public health disciplines, in particular epidemiology. Public health microbiology laboratories play a central role in the detection, monitoring, outbreak response, and provision of scientific evidence to prevent and control infectious diseases. European preparedness for responding to new infectious disease threats requires a sustainable infrastructure capable of detecting, diagnosing, and controlling infectious disease problems, including the design of control strategies for the prevention and treatment of infections. A broad range of expertise, particularly in the fields of epidemiology and public health microbiology, is necessary to fulfil these requirements. Public health microbiology is required to provide access to experts with expertise and experience in all relevant communicable diseases at the regional, national and international level in order to mount rapid responses to emerging health threats, plan appropriate prevention strategies, -

Mathematicians who were or became university professors Vincenzo Amato (1881-1963) graduated from the University of Catania in 1901. He was a secondary school teacher and also taught at the University of Catania since 1901. In 1936 he became professor of Calculus at the University of Cagliari, Messina and then Catania (in 1941). He was interested in mechanics but then turned his interest to algebra, inspired by Cipolla’s research. Francesco Caldarera (1825-1920) graduated from the University of Palermo and then became professor of rational mechanics at the same university in 1860. He published several notes of rational mechanics and elementary treatises as well. He was a member of the Accademia di scienze, lettere ed arti (Palermo), Accademia degli Zelanti, and Circolo Matematico di Palermo. Francesco Chizzoni (1848-1904) graduated from the Politecnico of Milan in 1873. He taught at the University of Modena and in 1886 became professor of descriptive geometry at the University of Catania. He published papers on classic geometry of lines and surfaces, and university treatises on descriptive geometry. Michele Cipolla (1880-1947) graduated from the University of Palermo in 1902 and became a secondary school teacher. From 1910 he taught analysis at the University of Catania until 1923, when he became professor at the University of Palermo. -
Littlewood's Fourth Principle
Littlewood’s fourth principle Rolando Magnanini∗and Giorgio Poggesi† August 6, 2014 Abstract In Real Analysis, Littlewood’s three principles are known as heuristics that help teach the essentials of measure theory and reveal the analo- gies between the concepts of topological space and continuos function on one side and those of measurable space and measurable function on the other one. They are based on important and rigorous statements, such as Lusin’s and Egoroff-Severini’s theorems, and have ingenious and elegant proofs. We shall comment on those theorems and show how their proofs can possibly be made simpler by introducing a fourth principle. These al- ternative proofs make even more manifest those analogies and show that Egoroff-Severini’s theorem can be considered the natural generalization of the classical Dini’s monotone convergence theorem. 1 Introduction. John Edenson Littlewood (9 June 1885 - 6 September 1977) was a British math- ematician. In 1944, he wrote an influential textbook, Lectures on the Theory of Functions ([7]), in which he proposed three principles as guides for working in real analysis; these are heuristics to help teach the essentials of measure theory, as Littlewood himself wrote in [7]: The extent of knowledge [of real analysis] required is nothing like so great as is sometimes supposed. There are three principles, roughly expressible in the following terms: every (measurable) set is nearly a finite sum of intervals; every function (of class Lλ) is nearly continuous; every convergent sequence is nearly uniformly convergent. We mention his early life and we illustrate his figure as Scientist and as Teacher of Mathematical Analysis, through his scientific works on partial differential equations of hyperbolic and parabolic type, and his scientific proselytizing that allowed him to create an exceptional school of Mathematical Analysis in Catania. Moreover we illustrate motivations that earned to him the Antonio Feltrinelli prize for Mathematics, Mechanics, and Applications of the National Academy of Lincei on 1991. MILLER∗ As 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Pi Mu Epsilon, I thought it would be fun to celebrate with 100 problems related to important mathematics milestones of the past century. The problems and notes below are meant to provide a brief tour through some of the most exciting and influential moments in recent mathematics. As editor I have been fortunate to have so many people contribute (especially James Andrews and Avery Carr, who assisted greatly in Parts I and II); for each year a contributor has written a description of the event and proposed a problem for the reader’s enjoyment. No list can be complete, and of course there are far too many items to celebrate. This list must painfully miss many people’s favorites. As the goal is to introduce students to some of the history of mathematics, ac- cessibility counted far more than importance in breaking ties, and thus the list below is populated with many problems that are more recreational. Many others are well known and extensively studied in the literature; however, as the goal is to introduce people to what can be done in and with mathematics, I’ve decided to include many of these as exercises since attacking them is a great way to learn. We have tried to include some background text before each problem framing it, and references for further reading. This has led to a very long document, so for space issues we split it into four parts (based on the congruence of the year modulo 4). -
