Over the past 20 years, it has been our mission to provide students with savvy and sometimes hard-to-get informa- tion about colleges so that they can find and get in to their “best fit” schools. To do that, we have authored over 200 college guidebooks, most notably, our Best Colleges guidebook series, which provides statistical data and nar- rative descriptions of the most academically outstanding institutions in the United States and Canada. You may be wondering how this guide is different. This is a guide to 322 colleges and universities that have dem- onstrated a notable commitment to sustainability. While it differs from our Best Colleges guidebooks in that it does not report information based on our surveys of students attending the schools, it very much embodies our phi- losophy that finding your “best fit” school means looking at everything from the school’s academic offerings to its extracurricular options and, here, its commitment to going green. We recognize there is a rising interest among students in attending colleges that practice, teach, and support environmentally responsible choices. Among the more than 7,000 college applicants The Princeton Review surveyed for its 2012 College Hopes & Worries Survey, 68 percent of respondents said they would value having information about a college’s commitment to the environ- ment, reflecting a steady increase since we began asking this question in 2008. (PrincetonReview.com/college- hopes-worries.aspx). Nowhere in this book will you find a hierarchical listing of the “greenest” colleges or the ones with the “best” sustainability practices. The point begs repeating: THIS BOOK IS NOT A RANKING. Rather, our aim is to highlight 322 campuses which, based on our survey of their school administrators, demon- strate a strong commitment to sustainability. Some of them are just in the beginning stages of defining sustain- ability priorities while others are reaping the rewards of a long-term commitment to green. A holistic approach to sustainable living on campus binds these schools together, covering everything from procurement and building guidelines to green academic programs and preparation for sustainable careers, and a willingness to be account- able for their green commitments. Just as there is no such thing as a perfect college (just a perfect college for you), there is not one way to be green; a school surrounded by a wildlife reserve will have different sustainability pri- orities than one in the middle of a giant metropolis, and what is actually achievable for each may not be the same. That’s why, in this book, we take both a quantitative and qualitative look at a school’s sustainability efforts in areas we’ve identified as most important to students: 1) whether students have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and sustainable 2) how well a school is preparing students for employment in the green economy 3) how environmentally responsible a school’s policies are. We invited 2,000 schools to take our survey in order to come up with the 322 profiled here. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) helps provide a layer of accountability for college campuses seeking ways to make their green building projects, both old and new, as environmentally responsible as possible. USGBC’s LEED® green building rating system is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. Many of the schools profiled in these pages have LEED-certified buildings on campus or a commitment to future LEED projects, but that was not a criterion for inclusion in the book. All of the schools in this guide, whether or not they are profiled in our annual Best Colleges book, are exemplary institutions that address the balance of people, planet, and prosperity in fascinating ways. Our hope, in coordinat- ing with the USGBC, is to break down what green looks like across different campuses in a way that will help you to choose the right school to live sustainably. HOW WE PRODUCED THIS BOOK The story of how we produced this book needs to begin with the story of how our “Green Rating” began. That’s because our criteria for the selection of schools in this book and much of the data we report in their school write- ups

    The College Hopes & Worries Survey 2020 Findings ________________________________________________________________________ About the Survey The Princeton Review®, one of the nation's best-known education services companies, has conducted the College Hopes & Worries Survey annually since 2003. Approximately 177,000 people have participated in the survey since its inception. (See end* of this report for numbers of respondents year-over-year.) About 80% have been students applying to colleges; 20% have been parents of applicants. Survey participants have primarily been users of the company's website and readers of its annual Best Colleges book in which the survey questionnaire is published every year. The survey has 15–20 questions, the majority of which have been asked annually or for several years. The questions have multiple-choice answers with the exception of one question, "What is your 'dream' college?" that invites a fill-in-the-blank answer. The 2020 survey findings are based on responses from 12,845 people: 80% (10,276) were students applying to colleges, and 20% (2,569) were parents of applicants. Respondents completed the survey between August 2019 and early March 2020. They hailed from all 50 states and DC. The majority of respondents completed the survey online via outreaches The Princeton Review conducted. Some respondents submitted a paper version of the survey that was published in The Princeton Review book, The Best 385 Colleges / 2020 Edition (Penguin Random House, August 2019). The company awards a $2,000 college scholarship to one survey participant and a Princeton Review book to 25 other participants (all chosen at random). Participants chosen to receive a Princeton Review book were offered their choice of either The Best Value Colleges, Colleges That Create Futures, or Paying for College.

    October 2018 A “FIT” OVER RANKINGS Why College Engagement Matters More Than Selectivity EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Based on the Challenge Success survey data of more than 100,000 high school students across the country, we know that the college admissions process can often be a top source of stress and anxiety for students. While many schools, counselors, and parents encourage students to focus on finding the “right fit” college, this advice can be difficult to follow without a better understanding of what “fit” means and what matters most — both for learning and engagement in college — and for life outcomes beyond college. This paper reviews and synthesizes key research in order to address many of the important questions and concerns we hear from students, parents, and schools about the college admissions process: What do college rankings really measure? Are students who attend more selective colleges better off later in life? What is “fit” and why does it matter? What the research shows: RANKINGS ARE PROBLEMATIC. Many students and families rely on college rankings published by well-known organizations to define quality. The higher the ranking, the logic goes, the better the college must be and vice versa. We find that many of the metrics used in these rankings are weighted arbitrarily and are not accurate indicators of a college’s quality or positive outcomes for students. COLLEGE SELECTIVITY IS NOT A RELIABLE PREDICTOR OF STUDENT LEARNING, JOB SATISFACTION, OR WELL-BEING. We explore the research on whether attending a selective college predicts important life outcomes and find no significant relationship between a school’s selectivity and student learning, future job satisfaction, or well-being.

    11/1/2004 Shoup Run Watershed Restoration Plan Developed by the Huntingdon County Conservation District for The Shoup Run Watershed Association Introduction Watershed History The Shoup Run, locally known as Shoup’s Run, watershed drains approximately 13,746 acres or 21.8 square miles, in the Appalachian Mountain, Broad Top region of the Valley-Ridge Physiographic Province. Within this province, the area lies within the northwestern section of the Broad Top Mountain Plateau. This area is characterized by narrow valleys and moderately steep mountain slopes. Shoup Run is located in Huntingdon County, but includes drainage from portions of Bedford County. Shoup Run flows into the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River near the community of Saxton at river mile 42.4. Shoup Run has five named tributaries (Figure 1). Approximately 10% of the surface area of the Shoup Run basin has been surface mined. Much of the mining activity was done prior to current regulations and few of the mines were reclaimed to current specifications. Surface mining activity ended in the early 1980’s. There is currently no active mining in the watershed. Deep mines underlie approximately 12% of the Shoup Run watershed. Many abandoned deep mine entries and openings still exist in the Shoup Run Basin. Deep mining was done below the water table in many locations. In order to dewater the mines, drifts were driven into the deep mines to allow water to flow down slope and out of many of the mines. The bedrock in this area is folded and faulted. Tunnels were driven through many different lithologies to allow drainage.
