Das Kulturzentrum Kabelmetal in Windeck-Schladern richtet das Festival „Schwingungen am Wasserfall“ mit Konzerten, Sessions und Vorträgen aus. Dort treten Größen der elektronischen Musikszene auf. Ein Gespräch mit Thorsten Quaeschning von Tangerine Dream. Für das Genre der elektronischen Musik gilt die 1967 gegründete Gruppe Tangerine Dream als stilprägend. Ebenso wie Kraftwerk genießen die Berliner heute noch international Anerkennung. 2015 starb Gründer Edgar Froese, der als einziger Musiker die ganze Zeit dabei war und mit vielen verschiedenen Besetzungen arbeitete. Die drei verbliebenen Musiker machen weiter und treten am Samstag, 3. September, beim Elektronik-Festival „Schwingungen am Wasserfall“ bei Kabelmetal in Windeck auf. Einer von ihnen ist Thorsten Quaeschning. Thorsten Quaeschning: Das habe ich gar nicht entschieden. Edgar hat noch zu Lebzeiten sehr genau bestimmt, wie und mit wem Tangerine Dream weitergehen soll. Er hatte einen lange vorbereiteten Plan mit dem Ziel, dass seine Vision fortgesetzt wird. Seine Frau Bianca hat nun die administrative und visuell-kreative Rolle, und musikalisch sind wir jetzt ein Trio. Fuchs Introduction This document is the first installment of three in the Cerro Grande Fire Series. The Cerro Grande Fire left many in the Los Alamos community acutely aware of the impor- tance of backing up the hard drive. I could think of no better instrument for the process than LANL itself. This is a collection of letters written to various friends and colleagues (several of whom regularly circuit this archive), including Howard Barnum, Paul Be- nioff, Charles Bennett, Herbert Bernstein, Doug Bilodeau, Gilles Brassard, Jeffrey Bub, Carlton Caves, Gregory Comer, Robert Griffiths, Adrian Kent, Rolf Landauer, Hideo Mabuchi, David Mermin, David Meyer, Michael Nielsen, Asher Peres, John Preskill, Joseph Renes, Mary Beth Ruskai, R¨udigerSchack, Robert Schumann, Abner Shimony, William Wootters, Anton Zeilinger, and many others. In a way, I hope this book evokes images of the kind of dusty, pipe-smoke infused gems one sometimes finds in the far corner of a used bookstore—something not unlike the copy of William James’s collected letters I once owned. It takes a funny person to read such a book: one who is willing to dig in the far corner. But I would not want that imagery taken too far. For despite its nod to the happenstance that brought it about, this is not a book about the past, but about our open future. -

The “killer app” refers to Shor’s quantum factoring algorithm, which would unveil the encrypted communications of the entire Internet if a quantum computer could be built to run the algorithm. Schrödinger’s notion of quantum entanglement—and his infamous cat—is at the heart of it all. The book develops the concept of entanglement in the historical context of Einstein’s 30-year battle with the physics community over the true meaning of quantum theory. Frontiers in Optics 2008 Laser Science XXV 2008 FiO/LS WrapUp FiO/LS 2008 was one of the strongest in recent history. This year’s event, led by co‐chairs Lukas Novotny of the University of Rochester and Karl Koch of Corning, again brought together the industry leaders who have shaped the field with those who will oversee the breakthroughs of tomorrow. Conference highlights included several special events, with symposia honoring Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes for their monumental paper 50 years ago, NASA’s 50th Anniversary and Howard Schlossberg of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Plenary and Awards Session was FiO’s most highly attended event, and included keynote presentations from Nobel Laureate John Mather, Prof. Anton Zeilinger and award winners Peter Knight and James Bergquist. In addition to these special events, industry leader Emil Wolf gave his 50th consecutive presentation at an OSA Annual Meeting, a milestone that recalled many of the successes of his prestigious career. The technical conference included 829 paper presentations on hot topics in optics such as 3‐D virtual reality on mobile devices, new optics for improved solar power generators, a new optical method using algae to convert sunlight into biofuel and a new non‐invasive tool for brain surgeons. Several Nobel Laureates were in attendance to present research and give remarks, including Nicolas Bloombergen, Steven Chu and Charles Townes, among others. Conference events drew a record 2,100 attendees and more than 100 exhibitors, while many sessions were standing‐room only.
