  • The Garment of Adam in Jewish, Muslim, and Christian Tradition
24 The Garmentof Adam in Jewish, Muslim, and ChristianTradition Stephen D. Ricks Although rarely occurring in any detail, the motif of Adam's garment appears with surprising frequency in ancient Jewish and Christian literature. (I am using the term "Adam's garment" as a cover term to include any garment bestowed by a divine being to one of the patri archs that is preserved and passed on, in many instances, from one generation to another. I will thus also consider garments divinely granted to other patriarchal figures, including Noah, Abraham, and Joseph.) Although attested less often than in the Jewish and Christian sources, the motif also occurs in the literature of early Islam, espe cially in the Isra'iliyyiit literature in the Muslim authors al ThaclabI and al-Kisa'I as well as in the Rasii'il Ikhwiin al ~afa (Epistles of the Brethren of Purity). Particularly when discussing the garment of Adam in the Jewish tradition, I will shatter chronological boundaries, ranging from the biblical, pseudepigraphic, and midrashic references to the garment of Adam to its medieval attestations. 1 In what fol lows, I wish to consider (1) the garment of Adam as a pri mordial creation; (2) the garment as a locus of power, a symbol of authority, and a high priestly garb; and (3) the garment of Adam and heavenly robes. 2 705 706 STEPHEN D. RICKS 1. The Garment of Adam as a Primordial Creation The traditions of Adam's garment in the Hebrew Bible begin quite sparely, with a single verse in Genesis 3:21, where we are informed that "God made garments of skins for Adam and for his wife and clothed them." Probably the oldest rabbinic traditions include the view that God gave garments to Adam and Eve before the Fall but that these were not garments of skin (Hebrew 'or) but instead gar ments of light (Hebrew 'or).

  • Heavenly Priesthood in the Apocalypse of Abraham
HEAVENLY PRIESTHOOD IN THE APOCALYPSE OF ABRAHAM The Apocalypse of Abraham is a vital source for understanding both Jewish apocalypticism and mysticism. Written anonymously soon after the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple, the text envisions heaven as the true place of worship and depicts Abraham as an initiate of the celestial priesthood. Andrei A. Orlov focuses on the central rite of the Abraham story – the scapegoat ritual that receives a striking eschatological reinterpretation in the text. He demonstrates that the development of the sacerdotal traditions in the Apocalypse of Abraham, along with a cluster of Jewish mystical motifs, represents an important transition from Jewish apocalypticism to the symbols of early Jewish mysticism. In this way, Orlov offers unique insight into the complex world of the Jewish sacerdotal debates in the early centuries of the Common Era. The book will be of interest to scholars of early Judaism and Christianity, Old Testament studies, and Jewish mysticism and magic. ANDREI A. ORLOV is Professor of Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity at Marquette University. His recent publications include Divine Manifestations in the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha (2009), Selected Studies in the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha (2009), Concealed Writings: Jewish Mysticism in the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha (2011), and Dark Mirrors: Azazel and Satanael in Early Jewish Demonology (2011). • Early Christians Identified Jesus' Shroud with His Royal & Priestly Robe!
Early Christians Identified Jesus’ Shroud With His Royal & Priestly Robe! __________________________ By Larry Stalley1 Copyrighted © 2020 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Based on an abundance of scientific and historical evidence that has surfaced in recent years, the author believes the Shroud of Turin is the genuine burial cloth that Joseph of Arimathea purchased and used to wrap the body of Jesus. Peter and “the disciple whom Jesus loved” found the tomb empty of a corpse on Resurrection Day. However, when they found the funeral linens, something about their appearance caused the disciple to “believe” (John 20.8). The cloth was stained with blood and had been defiled by its contact with a corpse. Why then wasn’t the Shroud viewed as “unclean,” discarded and buried? Why did the early Church treasure this piece of linen and seek to safeguard it from opponents and enemies of the Faith? How did they come to perceive this cloth? What beliefs became attached to it? In a former paper2 the author attempted to show that the early Christians likely perceived the Shroud as being the miraculous “sign of Jonah” that Jesus had promised.3 In this paper he will seek to demonstrate that the early Christians also identified Jesus’ Shroud, typologically, as his royal- priestly robe, sanctified by His sacrificial blood! The earthly Shroud was a “type and shadow” of the heavenly robe! With its miraculous image, the Shroud was viewed as being a link between the earthly and heavenly realities. ____________________________________________________ 1. • The High-Priestly Christology of the Letter to the Hebrews: a Fusion of Late Second Temple Theology and Early Christian Tradition”
“THE HIGH-PRIESTLY CHRISTOLOGY OF THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS: A FUSION OF LATE SECOND TEMPLE THEOLOGY AND EARLY CHRISTIAN TRADITION” NADINE BRAUNDA FISHBECK Thesis is under the direction of Dr. Paul Holloway and Dr. James Dunkly The high-priestly Christology of the Letter to the Hebrews is unique in the New Testament canon. As an early Christian writing, this letter may help us in our understanding of what ideas, concepts, and traditions of late second temple Judaism influenced the development of early Christian theology and Christology. The author of Hebrews inherited the apocalyptic world view of second temple Judaism and of the early Christian church. The author’s theology also has antecedents within the second temple priestly tradition. One of these antecedents included the hope of a savior figure as seen in the expectation of a priestly messiah. The author also believed in the efficacy of the temple cult and drew from the cultic tradition as he developed his high-priestly Christology. The author fused elements from the Jewish priestly theology with the early Christian tradition that he had received to argue that the exalted Jesus Christ was Son of God as well as the heavenly high priest of the heavenly sanctuary. ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract The publication of the Book of Mormon brought forward the first of many comparisons between the restorational work of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his surround- ing environment, including Freemasonry. One point of comparison has been the lambskin apparel mentioned in 3 Nephi 4:7. A possible connection exists between this item of apparel and ritual clothing that was worn in ancient Israel, Egypt, and Mesoamerica. I suggest a possi- ble reason for the use of this item of clothing among the secret combinations in the Book of Mormon and discuss the lambskin apron used in Freemasonic ritual. Girded about with a Lambskin Matthew B. • Resurrection and Priesthood: Christological Soundings from the Book of Hebrews David Schrock
Resurrection and Priesthood: Christological Soundings from the Book of Hebrews David Schrock David Schrock is the senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Seymour, Indiana. He earned his Ph.D. from Te Southern Baptist Teological Seminary. Dr. Schrock is also the assistant editor for the Journal for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and is an associate research fellow for the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. He has writen for Te Gospel Coalition, Credo Magazine, Desiring God, and has contributed a chapter to Whomever He Wills: A Surprising Display of God’s Mercy (Founders, 2012). In orthodox Christology, the priesthood of Christ has been a regular feature of Jesus’ messianic portrait. In Reformed circles, the munus triplex goes back to before Calvin.1 Likewise, when Jacob Arminius gave his doctoral sermon, his subject was none other than the priesthood of Christ.2 In the seventeenth century, debate swirled around the Socinians,3 who denied the earthly priesthood of Jesus, and evangelical scholars like John Owen, whose seven-volume commentary on Hebrews (with doctrinal excurses) all but exhausted the subject.4 Yet, in more recent centuries the priesthood of Christ, when it has not been ignored entirely, has been truncated and tersely treated by most systematic theologians.5 A counter-example to this scholarly trend is the work of David M. Mof- ft. His monograph, Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle of Hebrews, makes a bold argument for making resurrection central to of Hebrews’ portrayal of Jesus’ priesthood.6 While this article does not stand in total agreement with his resurrection-centered approach to Hebrews or SBJT 18.4 (2014): 89-114 89 The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology 18.4 (2014) Christ’s priesthood,7 I do agree that the resurrection plays an under-appreci- ated role in qualifying Jesus to be a heavenly priest.

  • Rethinking Amalek in This 21St Century
religions Article Rethinking Amalek in This 21st Century Steven Leonard Jacobs Department of Religious Studies, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0264, USA; [email protected] Received: 16 May 2017; Accepted: 15 September 2017; Published: 18 September 2017 Abstract: Twice in the Hebrew Bible—Exodus 17:14–16 and Deuteronomy 25: 17–19—the ancient Israelites were commanded to “blot out” the memory of Amalek, their enemy for all time (as God intended to do as well). Yet, because these texts are a part of Jewish (and Christian) religious traditions, annually these passages are read in the synagogue on the appropriate Sabbath occasions in the annual reading cycle, and linked to the Festival of Purim that is based on the Book of Esther. Over the course of Jewish history, Amalek has served as the symbolic enemy of the Jewish people (e.g., Armenians, Nazis, Palestinians); indeed, all of the enemies of the Jews were and are understood to be descendants of the original Amalekites, and thus worthy not only of enmity but of destruction as well (e.g., Haman, Antiochus, Titus, Hadrian, Torquemada, Khmelnitsky, Hitler). Today, many of those in Israel allied with the so-called “settler movement” associated with right-of-center Orthodox Judaism and located among populations primarily of Palestinian Muslims, and Arabs view them as the descendants of Amalek as well, and thus sanction and legitimate their own at times violent actions and behaviors. At its most transparent level, responding to Amalek is a response to antisemitism, both historical and contemporary. This paper examines the history of Amalekut (“Amalek-ness”) within the Jewish (and Christian) religious tradition, the role of memory and forgetting of those survivors and their descendants traumatized by their enemies, the current manner of branding one’s enemies as descendants of Amalek, and whether, in truth, reconciliation is even possible among enemies of long standing.

Cheryl Exum, Robert P. Gordon, Andrew D.H. Mayes, Carol Meyers, Patrick D. Miller JSOT Press Sheffield FROM FIG LEAVES TO FINGERNAILS: SOME NOTES ON THE GARMENTS OF ADAM AND EVE IN THE HEBREW BIBLE AND SELECT EARLY POSTBIBLICAL JEWISH WRITINGS Stephen N. Lambden In this paper an attempt will be made to outline and comment upon some aspects of the significance of the garments of Adam and Eve in the Hebrew Bible and certain postbiblical Jewish writings. Atten- tion will largely be focused upon early Jewish traditions about the nature of the first couple's attire. No attempt will be made to comment upon either the whole complex of early Jewish interpretations of the key text (Gen. 2.25; 3.7; and 3.21) or upon the rich variety of themes and motifs associated therewith in Christian, Gnostic, Hermetic, Manichaean, Mandaean and Islamic sources. 1. The Biblical Texts Modern biblical scholars have, on the whole, neglected the importance and interrelationships of Gen. 2.25, 3.7 and 3.21 for the understand- ing of the opening chapters of Genesis. Considerable attention has been paid, for example, to the motif of the 'serpent' and to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil but the 'nakedness' and 'garment' motifs usually receive disappointing or cursory treatment. When Gen. 2.25, 3.7 and 3.21 are read in sequence, they indicate a threefold transition in the status or condition of the first couple of central importance, that is, (1) an initial nakedness and unashamedness, to (2) being clothed in fig-leaf 'aprons', and then (3) being clothed in 'coats of skins'.
