LINCOLNSHIRE HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2019 The Heritage Open Days event happens again in September. Each year the Heritage Open Days festival celebrates the county's architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are not usually open or would normally charge an entrance fee. Again this year Saxonhouse (East Firsby) opens as part of that festival on Friday 13th and Sunday 15th of September between 12.15pm and 4.30pm. During those afternoons, there are also two talks scheduled for 12.30pm and 3pm. Booking is required. Saxonhouse is a centre for exploring the life and culture of the early medieval period. Featuring an archaeologically accurate reconstruction of a Saxon craftsman's home, the site lets you step back into the day-to-day existence of a Saxon family. If you would like to attend, please contact us on 01673 878636 or email Jude on [email protected] - you can also visit the website at www.saxonhouse.co.uk

Please send details of your 2019 Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning before the 15th 27th of August for publication in the Sept September Signpost.

LETTER FROM THE MINISTRY TEAM Dear Friends Having celebrated Easter, Pentecost and Trinity we are now moving into the height of summer. Days, when the warmth and brightness of the sun seems to give everyone a sense of cheer and joyfulness. The poppies in our garden are glorious and I am reminded of a quote from the Bible when Jesus said, "Consider how the lilies grow, they do not labour or spin yet, I tell you not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed as one of these." Looking around our wild flower garden, who can doubt this, or the hand of God in nature. There is so much colour and diversity ALL of which was lovingly created by God our Father. We went on a bus ride to with our walking group yesterday! There were some school children playing on the beach. They were making sand castles, paddling in the sea and having donkey rides. In fact, the kind of summer days that I remember from my childhood. Thankfully, some things never change. Whilst there, I read that Cleethorpes is considered to be the centre of the earth, because the Greenwich Meridian Line at zero degrees longitude runs through as it travels round the globe from north to south. A metal plate has been set into the coastal path to mark the exact location. I stepped on this plate and immediately it came to me how great our Creator is. Everything in His Creation is perfect. It is only when we dismiss the fact that we should care for our planet that things go so dreadfully wrong. Global warming is a big issue at present and it is up to us to safeguard the beauty that God has given us and preserve the planet for future generations to come. HACKTHORN C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL As is usual at Hackthorn, there was no let-up in the pace of education, right up until the final notes of the joyous singing at the annual leavers' service! So much was fitted in to those last few weeks of term. Hardly a summer term goes by nowadays without something notable about the weather, this year it was the turn of Key Stage 1 to enjoy a respite from the normal meteorological challenges which seem to have become the norm on their 'field trips' in recent times. This term they enjoyed some really pleasant weather when they made their way to , to explore the flora and fauna of the beach environment. A lot of very interesting beach art was created using the array of stones, shells and driftwood which they discovered on their travels. They were also invited to have a look inside one of the beach huts by its very gracious occupants. Once again the children were truly magnificent in the way they conducted themselves throughout. It wasn't just Key Stage 1 who earned that kind of praise though, as Key Stage 2 showed their ability to be fantastic ambassadors for the school on their visit to Lincoln Mosque. So attentive were they when listening to all that the Imam had to tell them about the Mosque and the Muslim faith, that the adults were amazed to discover that a whole hour had passed before anyone noticed the time! We would like to thank everyone at the Mosque for a fascinating insight into their faith. Back at base, the annual 'taste-fest' which is the Year 5&6 bread making day took place. The prospect of mixing flour with water and a room full of young children might fill some people with more than a little trepidation, but the staff were mightily proud that all that was left behind at the end of the day was the delicious aroma of freshly baked bread. Even better, most of it was chocolate flavour! Move-up day gave everyone a final chance to get a flavour of what life will have to offer next term, as well as giving the new Year 1 and opportunity to welcome the new intake (and their parents) into the Reception Class that they have been looking after for them. Don't forget to make a note in your diaries for the Friends' Treasure Hunt, which will be taking place on the 28th of September. It's back by popular demand and promises to be a fun event for all the family. You won't be able to contact us this month, but there's always the website - www.hackthorn.lincs.sch.uk - where you can see for yourselves our review of the year showing the fantastic array of opportunities our school manages to pack into an all-too brief year. We are a small school with limited places and, in the main, the only way to get into our wonderful family is through reception. Occasionally, though, family circumstances change and a place further up becomes available. This is one such occasion, but you'll need to be quick about it!

Village Hall News The AGM was held on the 20th June. We were extremely disappointed that only one person attended and that was faithful Colin Moore. We need the support of the village to keep the hall open. If it is left to close there would be no Social Club, no lunch club, no gardening club, history group, art classes, patchwork and many more. The village will have no meeting place with all the functions we have now. The committee consists of mainly older members and is struggling with trying to recruit younger members. As a committee we try to vary the functions to include all ages. Also there is maintenance work to keep the hall clean and tidy. If there is anyone who could help with any of the above, please contact Bonnie on 01673 860920. 8 Signpost SPRIDLINGTON THE GROOVIEST DATE FOR THIS MONTH IT’S SIXTIES NIGHT “Hey man, where's it happening?” “SPRIDLINGTON VILLAGE HALL, dude There'll be cool music ‘n’ grooving.” “When?” “Friday 16th August. OWMBY PCC MONTHLY DRAW 1st 2nd 3rd Mark Illingworth Bettine Clark Ranee Reed NORMANBY BY SPITAL PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Not sure how that happened, but we are at the end of another academic year at Normanby School. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Headteacher at Normanby school and very much looking forward to seeing the exciting things that lie ahead of us all over the next academic year. Many thanks to all the governors, staff, pupils and families for making me feel so welcome and working hard to make the collaboration work so well. We have had lots of things to celebrate over the last year. More sporting trophies added to our collection thanks to the hard work from all pupils who have attended the Wolds Small School Partnership in events such as rugby, cross country, quick sticks hockey and multi skills. Many badges were also achieved through the 4 weeks of swimming lessons. Children who chose to attend Gymanstics club also achieved BAGA awards for their abilities. Well done to everyone. Staff have given up their time to run various after school clubs including cooking, board games, film, rounders, reading, science and Year 6 club. I look forward to seeing what exciting extra curricular activites we can offer over the next academic year. We have seen a change to the way music and foreign languages has been taught as we have welcomed in Vicky from Bilinguals to teach Spanish throughout the school and Andy to come and teach music through ukulele lessons. All children receive an hour a week of both Spanish and ukulele as well as an hour from a sports coach from JB Sports. This has been enjoyed by all and we are pleased to say it will continue next year. A huge thanks to all our FoNS members this year. They have worked very hard behind the scenes to plan and organise fun packed events for the children to raise money for the school. Over the last year they have funded the purchase of laptops for the children to use and paid for the coaches for 2 classes to go on school trips. Their last event of the year was the summer fair where they raised just over £600. That is an amazing amount for such a small school. Many, many thanks from all the staff and children. Our Busy Bees class has never been so busy and booked up as it is for September. To avoid disappointment, please contact the school asap if you have a child wanting to start over the next academic year. Children can join our pre school the term after they turn 3 years of age. If you would like any more information or to arrange a visit please phone Jacqui on 01673 878216. WELTON VILLAGE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB We have a busy month coming up when we hope to provide something extra for families during the school holidays. The summer reading challenge started in July, the Space Chase is the subject this time no doubt inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landings. There is a chart to collect stickers which are awarded whenever a participant reads a book, this is for children aged 4 to 11 and library members can call and claim their chart but do hurry along as we have limited numbers available. If your child is not a library member we can arrange for them to join, and as a bonus both joining the library and the Space Chase packs are free. We are also running our Storytime sessions again, every Wednesday throughout August at 10:30am, these are aimed at younger children and are ever popular with parents, grandparents and anyone else responsible for finding something to keep youngsters in their care amused during the summer break. These sessions are free to anyone wishing to come along, neither you or the child need be a library member. Last, but by no means least, we are trialling opening the library every Saturday morning from 10 to 12 o'clock during August to gauge the demand and hope this will be of particular benefit to working families who perhaps can't make our weekday times. Because we are partly in the shared space of Manor Park Sports Pavilion Saturday mornings are logistically difficult due to moving library shelves and there being the possibility of other users of the site. The summer break gives us an opportunity to test out ways of us making positive moves to open the library on Saturdays with a view to us establishing some regular opening in the future if the demand is there. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for each of these three ventures. 18 Signpost
