Welcome to the MA Screenwriting course at the London Film School This is the Course Handbook for the MA Screenwriting at the London Film School. The staff in the Department of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Education (HALE) at London Metropolitan University and that of the London Film School wish you a warm welcome to London Metropolitan University and the London Film School, and to the study of screenwriting. (a) Introduction to the Course The London Film School is one of a small group of exceptional internationally recognised film schools. The skills it teaches are at professional industry standards and its graduates are known across the world as leading directors, directors of photography, editors and so on. The course is intense and exciting. The School is the oldest film school in the United Kingdom and one of the pioneers of film education in the world. The MA Screenwriting course is aimed at developing screenwriting skills in the context of a filmmaking community where writing is an everyday practice and a collaborative process involving actors, directors, musicians, editors and producers. At LFS we explore the boundaries between writing and directing and stimulate debate through classes in film history, crosscultural approaches to dramaturgy and script readings with professional actors. Regular screenings of classic and contemporary films in our own film theatre and visits by contemporary filmmakers complement the core practical work of developing a feature screenplay. (b) Using This Handbook There is a considerable amount of information contained in this handbook, some of which will be of greater relevance to you as you work through your postgraduate studies than it is at the start of your course. Please keep it safely as you will need to refer to it through your course. We recommend that you read this Course Handbook through carefully. It is focused on your course, so you will find that from time to time you need to consult other more detailed sources of information, including the London Metropolitan Student Handbook, which contains the University‟s Regulations. It can be consulted on-line (at www.londonmet.ac.uk/student-

She attended the Netherlands Film Academy, where she graduated as a director in 2017. During her time there she co-directed a feature film, and directed several short films, music videos and commercials. Her graduation movie Sirene focused on a young boy struggling with his gender identity, which won several prizes and garnered critical acclaim. She seeks to tell unique stories in a creative way and challenges herself to do something different each time.     Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-48043-7 - The Filllls of Mike Leigh: Embracing the World Ray Carney Excerpt More information Biographical and Cultural Introduction Mike Leigh was born in 1943, the son of a Jewish doctor whose father had come to London from Russia. All of Leigh’s grandparents were Yiddish-speaking immigrants (he even had a great-grandfather who was editor of a Zionist newspaper before World War I), and Leigh is both proud and critical of his Jewish background.1 However, it has only been in recent years that he has begun to talk openly about his ethnic past and been a member of a socialist Zionist youth group, Habonim.2 How- ever, after visiting Israel under Habonim’s auspices in the summer of 1960, he became disillusioned with Israel’s policies toward the Arabs and dropped out of the movement. It wasn’t until 1991 that he was willing to go back to Israel, accepting an invitation to attend the Jerusa- lem Film Festival, which was showing Life Is Sweet.3 Leigh’s family kept a kosher home and were active Zionists, but neither has he been traditionally religious nor, as an adult, shown any interest in or formal identification with Jewish communal and cultural organizations. Despite these feelings, his Jewish roots are an undeniable part of who Leigh is, though they are a private rather than public aspect of his life. Those roots are also a factor that, he admits, have contributed to his being an outsider and rebel. Jewishness, however, has never been the subject of his art (excepting the unpleasant, middle-class Jewish characters in Hard Labour, who live in a house only two doors from where he grew up), though he has talked vaguely of making a film about the world of his parents and grandparents.

Screened during the ZFF, a comprehensive retrospective comprising a number of his productions will offer insight into his work. Mike Leigh will also head a ZFF Public Master Class. Mike Leigh is known to cinema audiences across the globe for films such as HIGH HOPES (1988), LIFE IS SWEET (1990), NAKED (1993), SECRETS AND LIES (1996), VERA DRAKE (2004), HAPPY-GO-LUCKY (2008), ANOTHER YEAR (2010) and, most recently, MR. TURNER (2014). Often set against the backdrop of a work- ing-class Britain, his sensitive works have garnered a variety of important film awards. Mike Leigh, together with his director colleagues Ken Loach and Stephen Frears, is an important exponent of so-called New British Cinema, a genus of filmmaking that has performed a filmic analysis of and cast its critical lens upon social developments in Britain since the 1980s. It frequently highlights the personal fortunes of Britain’s lo- wer classes. Stephen Frears was recipient of the first ever A Tribute to… award in 2006. Theatre, Television, Cinema Mike Leigh was born in 1943 in Salford, North West England. He learned his craft and his oft-praised sensitive approach to actors and actresses in the theatre.

    Educational Oversight: report of the monitoring visit of London Film School Limited, October 2018 1 Outcome of the monitoring visit 1 From the evidence provided in the annual return and at the monitoring visit, the review team concludes that London Film School (the School) is making commendable progress with continuing to monitor, review and enhance its higher education provision since the October 2016 Higher Education Review (Alternative Providers). 2 Changes since the last QAA review 2 There are currently 212 students studying for a master's programme at the School. Twelve students remain on the MA Filmmaking programme currently being taught out through a validation arrangement with London Metropolitan University. The other 200 students are studying on one of two programmes validated by the University of Warwick, the MA Filmmaking (177 students) and the MA Screenwriting (23 students). Both programmes were launched in 2016. The one significant material change at the School is in the appointment of a new Director, formally appointed in June 2018. There is a planned relocation for the London Film School for 2020 from its current base in Covent Garden to London Island in east London. Due to a commendable judgement in the 2016 review, there was no annual monitoring visit in 2017. 3 Findings from the monitoring visit 3 The London Film School has completed the actions set out in the 2016 Higher Education Review, including consolidating good practice and further enhancing the student learning experience (paragraphs 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). The School has robust admissions processes in place (paragraphs 9 and 10).
