Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Baltimore Orioles - Friday, April 25, 2014 This & That STAFF STILL AMONG LEAGUE ELITE-Kansas City’s pitching staff had its overall ERA jump to 3.31 by allowing 5 earned runs in yesterday’s finale in Cleveland, but it is still good enough to rank second in the American League behind Oakland (2.61)...the starting rotation has a 3.27 mark, the third best in the league, while also ranking third in “quality starts” with 13...Michael Mariot’s 3.2 scoreless innings helped the bullpen drop its ERA to 3.40, which ranks fifth in the Junior Circuit, just behind Seattle’s 3.38 mark in fourth.

TIGHTLY PACKED CENTRAL--The Royals have ridden a rollercoaster in the standings over the last couple of weeks, opening the week of April 15 in the A.L. Central cellar, but a 5-game winning streak propelled Kansas City into a first place tie with Detroit...recently the Royals have dropped 4 of their last 5 games and just like that find themselves on the bottom looking up at a game under .500 (10-11) and tied with the White Sox...all told, the five clubs in the A.L. Central are separated by just two games through the 1/8th pole of the 162-game slate.

A WEEK WITH THE EAST--Tonight starts a week-long stretch of games against opponents from the American League East...the Royals will be here through the weekend, take Monday at home off and then open a 6-game stay with a 3-pack against the Toronto Blue Jays...Central division rival Detroit will closeout the stay with a 3-game set commencing a week from tonight...KC is 2-1 against the East to this point, taking a home series from Tampa Bay.

COLLINS ON ASSIGNMENT--Southpaw reliever, Tim Collins, has been sent to Omaha (AAA) to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment with the Storm Chasers tonight in New Orleans...Collins has been sidelined since April 7 with a left flexor strain.

DUFFY A TOUGHIE IN RELIEF--Danny Duffy, a 25-year old southpaw, has made the most out of his opportunity to contribute out of the Kansas City bullpen...a starter throughout his career, including 31 career big league starts entering this season, Duffy didn’t make the club out of spring training, but was recalled on April 12 to work in relief...all he’s done to this point is toss 8.1 shutout innings allowing only 5 hits with 2 walks and 11 strikeouts...he’s limited opponents to a .172 batting average and recorded a 0.84 WHIP...he was the winning pitcher on April 16 in Houston with a 2.0-inning stint.

SCHEDULE WILL EVENTUALLY BALANCE OUT--By the time Kansas City returns to Kauffman Stadium on May 13 to host the Colorado Rockies, the club will have played 22 of its first 37 games away from home...the schedule will begin to turn when the Royals return from Seattle on May 11, as they’ll play in “The K” for 12 of 15 games from May 13-28 and 20 of 29 thru June 11...in fact, from May 13 until June 29, Kansas City will be at home for 29 of 45 games.

CAN’T GET IT TO HOLLY--Closer Greg Holland has been missing in action since converting his sixth save in as many tries on Saturday at home against Minnesota...Holland, who earned his first trip to the All-Star Game last year, has made good on 46 of his last 47 save opportunities, dating back to May 30 of last season...since that day, Holland has 6 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 39) and has allowed just 6 earned runs in 58.0 innings for an 0.93 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .158 average...he’s also recorded 89 in his last 58.0 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.81 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.

NED IN HIS FOURTH FULL SEASON--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is 294-340 since he was named to his position on May 13, 2010...he recently passed John Wathan (287) and Hal McRae (286) to move into fourth on KC’s all-time wins list...he is 23 wins shy of catching Tony Muser, who is third with 317 victories...Yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee (2003-08), is 751-842 all-time as a Major League skipper.

RECORD NUMBER ON THE TUBE--The seventh season of the Royals on Fox Sports Kansas City will feature a record 150 telecasts in High Definition, up from the 140 a season ago...Ryan Lefebvre will anchor the booth for 95 telecasts and Steve Physioc will call the play-by-play for 55 games...Rex Hudler will work all 150 games as the analyst...the pre and post-game shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who will be joined at every home game and several road affairs by Royals’ Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery...the Royals will also have two telecasts in the national Saturday window on the FOX Network and four other telecasts on the new FS1...KC has already been notified of at least one ESPN national game on June 2 from St. Louis.

GOLD THE COLOR OF 2013--The Royals had a franchise first last season with three players earning Rawlings Gold Gloves for their defensive prowess... Alex Gordon latched onto his third in as many years as a leftfielder, while catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer each brought home the gold... Hosmer’s win was a first for a KC first sacker, while Perez is the first receiver to get the gold since Bob Boone in 1989, the last multi-gold season for the Royals.
