Equine DNA Request Your may be chosen to represent its breed

An international appeal is being broadcast to horse-owners world wide. The goal is to construct the first uninterrupted equine DNA chain, thanks to an unprecedented international alliance of equestrian, cultural and scientific co-operation. The creation of the world’s first equine DNA chain brings staggering possibilities, including unraveling the origins of the horse. There are a number of aims involved in creating the Long Riders’ Guild Academic Foundation’s Equine DNA Database (LRGAF – EDD), the world’s first complete equine genetic library. They are:

. to create the first complete master list of every equine breed, . to collect DNA from every known breed, . to identify the breeds in danger of extinction, . to contribute to the conservation of these breeds, . to promote equine genetic research in a variety of academic fields, . to compile the results of the scientific investigations and to disseminate this information internationally, . to collaborate with academic institutions on educational programs related to the study of equine DNA. . You are being asked to submit a hair sample from your horse, note the date, age, sex, height, color and breed of the animal, along with the name and contact details of the owner. A photo of each horse is required also. This information will then be listed in the Guild’s master DNA list and the selected horse will represent that breed in the LRGAF-EDD. American Breeds that still need representation at this time include:

Albino International Striped Horse American Bashkir Curly Kiger American Cream Fox Trotter American Miniature Morgan Moyle ( Saddler) American Shetland National Spotted Horse American Walking AraAppaloosa Pinto Assateague/ of the (POA) Banker (Shackleford) Southwest Cerbat Spanish Colonial Chickasaw Ranger Welera Pony Cracker Horse

Pull 30-50 hairs from the or (about 10 at a time). [Note: this does not cause any pain to the horse.]

Make sure some of the hairs have a bulb or follicle at the end (this is where the DNA is located).

Align the bulb ends of the pulled hairs together and trim the end without the bulb to make the samples about 3-4 inches long.

Do not use shredded hair (from brushes etc.)

Complete Form DNA2 and sign it. Tape the hairs to the of the form.

Have a photograph taken showing the entire profile of your horse, with you standing beside his or her head.

Place samples, photograph and Form DNA2 into a standard envelope – do not put the samples in a plastic bag as the hairs must be able to breathe.

Post the envelope to:

The Long Riders' Guild P.O. Box 1532 Glasgow, KY, USA 42141. Attn: World Ride DNA Project

RELEASE I hereby donate the attached equine hair samples to The Long Riders' Guild International DNA Project and give The Long Riders' Guild the absolute right and permission to use these samples for the DNA study being undertaken by equine geneticists on behalf of The Long Riders' Guild.

I further grant permission to The Long Riders' Guild to include and publish the biographical information above regarding my horse and me in this international equine DNA study.

The photograph I am enclosing of my horse and me may also be used and published in this study.
