The Clay Court event is classified as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 by the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour and the Premier Mandatory Event on the Women's Tennis Association Tour. In the past it was also known as the Madrid Masters. The tournament is traditionally held on a red clay surface. The tournament was held on the blue courts in 2012, after which the ATP decided against the blue-white-blue. Ion Heard Țiriac, a Romanian former ATP professional and now a billionaire businessman, has owned the tournament since 2009. According to the Romanian edition, which is interviewed with Țiriac 2019, the tournament brings the city of Madrid annual benefits in excess of 107 million euros. In April 2019, Țiriac announced that he had extended the Mutua Madrid Open sponsorship contract for another 10 years, until 2031. Since he agreed to continue his work in Madrid, Țiriac will receive more than 30 million euros from Madrid in the coming years. History since its inauguration as the only men's event in 2002, the tournament has been classified as one of the tournaments of the ATP Masters series, where it replaced the now defunct Eurocard Open in Stuttgart. It was held from 2002 to 2008 at the Madrid Arena as the first of two Masters indoor hard court late-season events that preceded Atp Tour Finals (also indoors).

Western & Southern Open Partners Embrace Unique 2020 Tournament CINCINNATI (Aug. 6, 2020) – Numerous Western & Southern Open partners will remain involved with the tournament in 2020 during it’s one-year staging at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Due to circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Western & Southern Open will be held Aug. 20-28 at the same venue that will host the US Open beginning Aug. 31. The ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier 5 Western & Southern Open will be the first combined tournament hosting players from both circuits at a single venue since the tours suspended play in early March. While the venue will be different this year, a number of facets of the tournament will remain the same, starting with the name. Cincinnati-based Western & Southern Financial Group returns as title sponsor for a 19th year, marking the longest-running active naming rights relationship with a North American tennis tournament. The traditional Western & Southern backwall branding will be just one of the familiar aspects of the on-court presentation this year, particularly on the NTC’s Grandstand which will serve as the primary show court. As with 2019, a Porsche serve speed display and Rolex clock will be featured on the court. Player benches will once again be furnished by Mobisport and will be placed behind Cintas mats near drink coolers provided by BODYARMOR. Emirates will have net signage during the ATP Tour matches. LED screens will rotate sponsor signage on the side walls of the Grandstand while Motorola will be featured on LED boards on the side of the umpire’s chair.

Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. Reigning Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin, a 21-year- old American, has entered with former Western & Southern Open singles and doubles winner Victoria Azarenka. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals. They are joined in the field by the No. 2 team of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. The ATP Tour No. 1 ranked singles player, Novak Djokovic, has entered the doubles draw with countryman Filip Krajinovic. An additional five women’s teams and six men’s duos will join the fields through on-site entries, while the tournament will award three wild cards into each draw to complete the 32-team fields.
