The event is classified as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 by the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour and the Premier Mandatory Event on the Women's Tennis Association Tour. In the past it was also known as the Madrid Masters. The tournament is traditionally held on a red clay surface. The tournament was held on the blue courts in 2012, after which the ATP decided against the blue-white-blue. Ion Heard Țiriac, a Romanian former ATP professional and now a billionaire businessman, has owned the tournament since 2009. According to the Romanian edition, which is interviewed with Țiriac 2019, the tournament brings the city of Madrid annual benefits in excess of 107 million euros. In April 2019, Țiriac announced that he had extended the Mutua Madrid Open sponsorship contract for another 10 years, until 2031. Since he agreed to continue his work in Madrid, Țiriac will receive more than 30 million euros from Madrid in the coming years. History since its inauguration as the only men's event in 2002, the tournament has been classified as one of the tournaments of the ATP Masters series, where it replaced the now defunct in . It was held from 2002 to 2008 at the as the first of two Masters indoor hard court late-season events that preceded Atp Tour Finals (also indoors). In 2009, the tournament was transformed, expanding to include the premiere women's competition (replacing the tournament in Berlin) and moving to an earlier period of the tennis season to become the second Masters tournament of the Spring European clay court swing (replacing the Open) and moving outdoors to Manzanares Park, where a new complex with a retractable roof equipped main court was built, Caja Magica. Blue clay Tiriac proposed and introduced in 2012 a new color of blue clay for all surfaces of ships, motivating it supposedly better visually, especially for viewers on television (similar to some solid-court surface events migrating to blue from various previous color schemes). Some have suggested that the blue adaptation was a nod to the tournament's title sponsor, Spanish insurance giant Mutua Madrilegna. This controversial change was subsequently granted and started to be used in the 2012 edition of the tournament. In 2009, one of the outer tennis courts was already made of a new surface for players to test it. , director of the Open, assured that in addition to the color, the surface retained the same properties as the traditional red clay. Feliciano Lopez has been announced as the tournament director in Madrid starting in 2019. On December 1, 2011, Țiriac confirmed that the surface of the blue clay had been officially approved for both the 2012 tournament, both at the ATP and wta tournaments. However, since the event took place in 2012, threats of future boycotts by some players, especially Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (who both lost on the blue surface), have led to the tournament returning to the traditional red clay for the 2013 season. Roger Federer is the only player to have won the tournament on three different surfaces: Hard Courts (2006), Red Clay (2009) and Blue Clay (2012).
