Innovation > Retail > Mastic fantastic MASTIC FANTASTIC RETAIL There’s a new premium commodity in town, and its name is mastiha. Those of you with no ties to the Eastern Mediterranean or the Middle-East are forgiven for not knowing exactly what mastiha, or mastic gum, is. It’s a product of the mastic tree, which is mainly cultivated on Chios, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Small cuts are made in the bark of the tree, the sap seeps out and congeals into ‘tears’ of resin, which are harvested and cleaned by hand. The resinous result has been popular and highly valued in the region for thousands of years, and was traded from Venice to Damascus. More than just a sticky flavouring, mastiha is cherished for its antibacterial properties, used to reduce tooth plaque and treat gastric ulcers. It was once considered so precious that countries fought for the right to control its cultivation. (The ancients were very fond of mastic chewing gum.) Flash forward 20 centuries, and welcome to modern Greece, where the Chios Gum Mastic Growers Association started Mastihashop to stimulate demand for its produce. Mastiha is used in a wide variety of products, and Mastihashops carry everything from mastiha-flavoured coffee, biscuits and liqueur, to toothpaste, cosmetics and chewing gum. Abstract This paper presents a synopsis of the nomenclature of the family Lythraceae in the Northern Territory. Keysto the genera and species have been prepared. The family Lythraceae has been neglected in Australian systematics, andas a result both the taxonomy and nomenclature are confused. Not since the early work of Koehne (1881, 1903) has there been any major revision of the family. Recent work has been restricted to regional floras (Polatschek and Rechinger 1968; Chamberlain 1972; Dar 1975), with Bentham's Flora (1886) being the most recenton the family in Australia. From a survey of the available literature the author has attempted to extract all the relevant names applicable to Australian material and to present them solelyas a survey of the nomenclature of the group. No type material has beenseen, and the only material examined was that lodged in the Department of the Northern Territory Herbariaat Alice Springs (NT) and Darwin (DNA). -

Cleveland County Kitchen November 2019 Food of the Month – Ginger Chef: Sherri Greene Pickled Ginger Ingredients • 2 pounds fresh young ginger • 2 tsp. sea salt • 3 cups rice vinegar • 2 cups sugar • Quart glass jar Directions 1. Wash the young ginger rhizomes and slice the ginger thinly across the grain. 2. Salt the ginger slices in a bowl and let them sit for an hour. 3. Dry the ginger slices with paper towels and pack them into a clean mason jar. 4. Mix the rice vinegar and sugar in a pot and bring to a boil. 5. Pour the hot mixture of vinegar and sugar over the ginger slices in the jar. 6. When the ginger slices have cooled, cap the jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two months. The ginger may change color from light yellow to pale pink; this is normal. Simple Ginger Sauce Ingredients • 2 tablespoons grated ginger • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 3 tablespoons olive oil Directions 1. Mix the ginger, onion, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. 2. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and pour it over the ginger-onion mixture. 3. Stir, taste, and season with more salt if desired. This is delicious with pork or chicken, on salads, and with vegetables. Watson2 INTRODUCTION Crimson Cloud (also known as ‘Superba’) English Hawthorn grows rapidly in a pyramidal form to about 20 feet, then the crown expands to become oval or irregular (Fig. 1). The tree tolerates most soils, growing well in clay, but prefers heavy, dry loam. The main ornamental feature is white and red flowers borne in spring which together give the tree a deep pink color. Fruits are red and quite showy but do not cover the tree. Though quite ornamental, Hawthorns are susceptible to insect and disease problems. Branching habit is decidedly drooping and care should be given when locating this tree near pedestrian or vehicular traffic. GENERAL INFORMATION Figure 1. TRY THIS: POMEGRANATE Did you know: breaking into a pomegranate will reward you with hundreds of tiny seeds (called arils) surrounded by a translucent pith. The arils are sweet and juice-packed with a white crunchy seed inside. Most people eat the whole aril, including the fiber-rich seed, but you can also spit the seed out. Pomegranates are an excellent source of fiber, vitamin C and K, also packing in a good source of potassium, folate, and copper. Give them a try- they are easy to use and their taste won’t disappoint. How to: Pick it: Choose pomegranates that are plump, round, heavy for their size, and have a glossy, deep red skin. Store it: Store it in a cool dry cupboard to stay fresh for several weeks or in your fridge for up to 2 months Use it: To free the tiny seeds and avoid spraying yourself with the seed’s juice place a halved or quartered pomegranate in a bowl of water. Once in the water, simply use your fingers to loosen the red seeds. The seeds will sink, the white pith floats. Enjoy the seeds by popping a few in your mouth, topping onto salads or yogurt, or trying one of the recipes below! Mr. Nelson's Roses 1856
MR. NELSON'S ROSES, 1856 In The Southern Cultivator, Robert Nelson, a nurseryman of Macon, Georgia, listed the roses he considered best for Southern gardens: China Roses Arch Duke Charles; of very luxuriant growth, and a most prolific bloomer. The flowers are very different in color, varying from light pink to deep crimson, with all the intermediate shades, sometimes, also, marbled and spotted; grows 4 to 5 feet high. Camelliaflora; light rosy purple, in very large clusters; grows about 4 feet high. Carmine Superbe; flowers medium, in great profusion, of a very dark crimson hue, and of a globular form; foliage dark reddish; it forms a neat little hedge. Duchesse of Kent; flowers of medium size, beautifully formed, and in great clusters; color, light pink, or nearly white, with a cream colored centre. It is almost a never-ceasing bloomer, but during the droughts, in summer, the white flowers look as if sprinkled with blood. It grows very compact and bushy--almost dwarfish. Madam Breon; bright rosy crimson, very large and brilliant flowers, which, in the fall, assume a still more brilliant hue. Marjolin; an immense bloomer of a brilliant dark scarlet color and velvety tint. This variety, planted close to "Duchesse of Kent," or planted promiscuously in a hedge, will form a most beautiful object. Lawrenciana; also called the "Picayune" is remarkable for its very small flowers and foliage; it forms a neat edging around beds. Lawrenciana Viridis; the "Green Rose," is a botanical curiosity.
