Professor Ungan was born in Istanbul, in 1962. His wife is also a physician and family specialist sharing the same practice. Dr Ungan(s) has 2 children.

Professor Ungan has studied in TED Ankara College, Science (Fen) Lycee and Graduated from Cerrahpasa School of Medicine. He completed his compulsary service in Diyarbakir Tuberculosis Control Center. He made his postgraduate specialization on Family Medicine, in Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital and had the right to use specialist title in Family Medicine. He has been a founder and President of Turkish Association of Family Physicians.

He participated in and was certified in the Trainer’ Course in University of Exeter Post Graduate Medical School, Devon, UK . He also had “Internal Medicine and Endoscopy Training” in Phillippusstift Krankenhaus, Medizinische Klinik, Essen-Germany, 1993.

In 2002, meeting the requirements of Turkish Higher Council and being succesful both in the publication criterias and also in the examination he became an Associate Professor in Family Medicine. He served as Deputy Medical Director of the METU University Medical Center.

Dr Ungan is a Professor in Family Medicine Department of School of Medicine and is the acting chair of the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN), liasion and member of the executive board of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA- Europe). He is in international advisory board of the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP), Turkish Journal of Family Physicians, Turkish Clinics Family Medicine Journal, University Medical Journal, in editorial board of PRN Family Practice, vice editor of Euroasian Journal of Family Medicine, international scientific board of Konuralp Medcial journal. He organized 2003 Ankara, 2008 Antalya, 2013 Kusadasi EGPRN meetings. He was involved in organizing 2008 WONCA Europe Conference in and he was chair of the Scientific Comittee in WONCA Europe 2015 Istanbul Conference. Since 2017 he is president elect of WONCA Europe.

His researches are in the field of Primary Care, Clinical Medicine, Primary Care Gastroenterology and GI Diseases, Primary Care Team Education, Patient Education, Prevention, and Family Medicine. Some international projects were related wtih AIDS, Osteoporosis, European Research Agenda. Has more than 50 published papers, chapters in books.
