Page 1 Introduction

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Tenth Finchley Family Herald and Weakly Advertiser, following in our forbears tradition of providing a combination of uselessly informative and essentially necessary information to help both parents, leaders, scouts, and this time cubs too, get the most from camp.

Our camp site this year is in the grounds of Aboyne Castle, the home of the Group’s Patron, the Marquis of Huntly. 10 th Finchley has had an association with the Marquis and his heirs since the early 1920s. It is the Troops intention that summer camp is spent in Aboyne once every four years. We are fortunate that this year is also our centenary and are able to celebrate in such glorious surroundings.

As is always the way, we attend Aboyne at the time of the Highland Games and will take opportunity to attend them on the Saturday. Parents and friends of the group are invited over the weekend to join us for celebrations.

Contacts

We do not expect or require young people attending camp to bring mobile phones to camp. We encourage parents to contact the leaders in the first instance if there is a need to get in touch with a young person.

If it is necessary to contact a camper, please use the following numbers, in order, and/or email us – we all have smart phones:

Camp Leader, Mike Colyer: 07411 727183 [email protected] Group , Rob Wanders: 07962 335858 [email protected] Asst Scout Leader, Mhuire Mollison: 07825 728428 [email protected]

General Notes

1. All participants must travel to and from the Camp in uniform. Kilts to be sent with Kit bag on hanger.. 2. Black bin bags are not suitable for bedding rolls as they tear very easily, with the result that the contents get lost or soiled in transit. They can also get mistaken for rubbish and thrown away. In the absence of a proper stuff- sack, a fabric bag-for-life can be used – please not plastic ones. Suitcases are NOT allowed - there is no room for these in a tent. 3. Please place wash proof name labels in all clothing, which should have your Sons/Daughters Name or initials. 4. Please label with either indelible ink and/or engraving as appropriate, with your Sons/Daughters Name. (The old favourites of paper labels held on with sticky tape, or nail varnish dots are not suitable. The paper labels wash off after the second or third meal, and it's amazing how many mums use the same shade of nail varnish!). 5. No mobile phones or similar items (i.e. radios, walkman or cassette players) which require batteries to run or are expensive – see note overleaf on insurance. The Group or its leaders cannot be responsible for loss or damage Equipment Notes ~ Pocket Money ~ Jewellery

Here is some basic information regarding some of the items you may require / should be aware of. Sleeping Bags Synthetic filled bags are easier to clean than natural filling. Zips can be a source of cold if no baffle is fitted. Penknives PLs and APLs have permission to bring penknives to this Camp only, and ONLY if they have the Axe and Knife Badge. Penknives must be handed into Mhuire or Mike when delivering Kit bags to the Hall on Sunday 27 th July. Warm Wear A number of layers is warmer than one thick one and the warmth can be regulated more easily - do not forget your hands and head. Torch Do not pack your torch with batteries fitted (or at the bottom of your kit) as it could easily get accidentally turned on and you will arrive at the camp/holiday with flat batteries. Alternatively reverse one of the batteries Jewellery Earrings, nose rings, and other decorative jewellery are NOT recommended on camps and activities. Page 11 Camera Disposable cameras are recommended due to insurance reasons

Medication All medication should be in a plastic bag with the Childs name and handed to a leader or first aider on arrival Towels Recommended bring a hand towel and medium sized towel. Ideally, the medium towel will be a quick drying microfibre travel towel – important these are washed before first use to be most effective. Bath towels are too large for camp and never dry.

Hints, Tips and General Information

Spending Money

• Generally there will be no opportunity for campers to spend money, except at the Highland Games. It is advised that campers bring no more than £10. The Leaders and 10 th Finchley Scout Group cannot accept responsibility for the safe keeping of or liability for any loss of cash brought to camp Clothing

• There is always a pile of unclaimed clothing at the end of camp, some of it quite expensive. Please ensure your child’s clothing and other possessions are properly marked. Please use permanent markers. Please do not bring expensive designer gear but “old” stuff • Jeans are the worse thing to wear at camp and are forbidden when doing water activities – if they get wet on Day One they remain wet for the entire camp, they become very heavy and uncomfortable to wear and lose their insulating properties for this reason Jeans are NOT allowed at camp • Living outdoors for days is quite different from making brief outings from a centrally heated house. What may be adequate clothing for ‘normal’ circumstances is often inadequate for a camp, even if the weather is expected to be warm. The temperature usually drops significantly at night. When deciding on clothing use the ‘shell system’ approach; several layers of thin clothing can be used to regulate temperature according to the level of activity, and are better than the all-or-nothing effect of thick, bulky clothing. A woolly hat is also an essential item of clothing as you lose a large amount of heat through your head which acts like a chimney especially in cold weather • Wellington boots or Hiking Boots should be included in the kit, if possible, however these are not to be worn for water-borne activities. If you assume that the site will be wet and muddy, you can’t go far wrong. Expensive Designer Trainers and other items are NOT suitable for camp wear. Page 12

• Please make sure you bring a set of waterproof cagoules.

Sleeping gear

• The majority of sleeping bags for young people seem to be thin and usually inadequate, even for summer use. If you have any doubt about the bag, please show it to a leader before camp. If you have a small bag you can put inside a larger one this should suffice (alternatively a blanket or two). There is nothing worse than being cold at night. If camping early or late in the year it will get cold at night so an extra blanket that can be folded in three with two folds under the sleeping bag and one on top will make a difference • Tracksuits make ideal night time wear as they provide some extra warmth especially when getting up at night and if it is really cold then a pair of bed socks and a woolly hat will help • A roll mat/self inflating mattress or similar will provide insulation from the cold ground as well as cushioning the lumps and bumps. Alternatively, if blankets are used, fold double under the sleeping bag as well as folding it over the top but make sure your child knows this.

Eating Utensils & Tea Towels

• Eating utensils, cutlery and plates do NOT need to be taken to camp. • Three Tea Towels will be needed, do not pack your best linen, these will return unrecognisable! Electronic Games, Mobile phones and insurance

We strongly advise against bringing expensive battery operated equipment to camp. Batteries quickly run out and equipment gets lost or damaged which causes unnecessary stress, our insurance does not cover for such items . Remember camp sites usually cover a large area making it physically impossible to look for things that fall out of their pocket while running For this reason Mobile phones are also NOT permitted on camp as our insurance does NOT cover for such items. Any necessary messages can be passed via the leaders – See Contacts.

The Scout Association, 10 th Finchley Scottish Scout Group or its leaders CANNOT be responsible for theft, loss or damage to mobile phones, expensive cameras, electronic games, money, etc.

Page 13 Torches

Good cheap torches are readily available. Small torches such as the mini Maglite are not very useful and can easily be lost. Have a spare set of batteries and at least one bulb - either remove or reverse one of the batteries during transit to prevent the torch accidentally getting turned on. Wind-up torches are not very effective for general activities as they don’t last long and the user spends more time winding it up than doing the activity!

Food – please do not send food/sweets. These attract vermin in the tents, scouts will be fed well ☺

Meals

Campers should have already notified the Camp Leader about any dietary requirements. Provisions will be made for vegetarian, jewish and muslim diets. Campers are NOT encouraged to bring their own food. It is an important part of camp experience that everyone eats the same food as far as reasonably practical.

Typically meals will be….

Breakfast in patrols (gas stoves): Cereals, cooked, drinks

Lunch: Packed lunch comprising sandwiches fruit, chocolate & cereal bars, crisps fruit juice

Dinner in patrols (wood fire) Main meal with veg, dessert, fruit juice/squash

Supper (Central on gas stove) usually at camp fire Biscuits, hot chocolate
