By PAT KRAUSE sports@yourdailyglobe WAKEFIELD – If bet- ting was legal on high school basketball games, most bettors would throw down a few shackles on either Ewen-Trout Creek or Crystal Falls Forest Park as the teams with the best chance to win the girls MHSAA Class D District Tournament 127. That would be a good bet, but if you were looking for a sleeper team to grab the championship plaque and bring it home to their trophy case, the Wakefield- Marenisco Cardinals would be a good choice. Take a look at how W-M coach Bruce Mahler assessed his 2017-18 regu- lar season (8-12, 6-8). "After we beat Republic- Michigamme and Watersmeet and then lost to E-TC in the district finals last year, I thought we could have a real good team going into this sea- son," Mahler said. "But early on, we didn't play as well as I thought we would. Cloe Bachand, who I thought would be a real nice player for us, tore her ACL in the first game and a couple of girls we could have used didn't come out. And then we lost Melissa Wanink for six games. "But we won five out of seven games and the girls played like I knew we could. We've been playing well for the last 1 1/2 months.
