Dagoperationer Den 5. Marts Den 5 Dagoperationer den 5. marts Den 5. marts afsendte 8th Air Force 429 tunge bombefly og 689 jagerfly mod Tyskland, hvor dagens hovedmål for 1st og 3rd Air Divisions vedkommende var brændstofinstallationerne ved Ruhland. Vejret var dog for dårligt og bombestyrken angreb i stedet for alternative mål ved hjælp af H2X. 1st og 3rd Air Division var den 5. marts henholdsvis First og Second Force. 2nd Air Division havde Hamburg og Harburg som mål og var udnævnt til at være Third Force. B-17G fra 1st Air Division i færd med at kaste bomber over Chemnitz. (Fold3) First Force First Force bestod af 151 B-17 fra 1st Air Division, der var formeret i fire Group formationer eskorteret af 197 ud af 232 afsendte P-51 fra fem Fighter Groups. First Force havde til opgave at bombe ruhland Synthetic Oil Refinery, men målet var 10/10 overskyet, hvorfor man i stedet for valgte at bombe et industriområde i Chemnitz i stedet for. Chemnitz blev bombet af 128 B-17, der kastede 304.1 tons sprængbomber og 2 tons brandbomber over byen. Bombningen blev gennemført ved hjælp af H2X idet også Chemnitz var skydækket. Derudover blev der kastet ark med falske rationeringsmærker samt sabotagemateriel i form af små brandbomber, som bestod af små konvolutter, der brød i brand når indholdet indtørrede. Da Chemnitz var fuldstændig dækket af skyer var det ikke muligt for besætningerne at se effekten af deres angreb. Også fly fra 3rd Air Division bombede Chemnitz i løbet af dagen og den efterfølgende aften iværksatte RAF Bomber Command et større angreb på byen, hvorfor skaderne i Chemnitz mere indgående vil blive behandet i dette afsnit. 1st Air Division rapporterede, at de havde bombet industriområde i Chemnitz, medens 3rd Air Division forsøgte at ramme rangerbanegården i byen. Den 15. marts klokken 15.15 blev Chemnitz fotograferet af et fly fra 14th Squadron og følgende fototyderrapport om skader på industri og især transportmål i Chemnitz blev udarbejdet på baggrund af disse billeder: Photographs covering the northern part of the town not previously covered after the last attacks show that the large area of devastation in the centre of the gtown extends northwards almost as far as the main railway station, and that there are many others isolated areas of severe damage. There is no apparent damage to through lines or main sidings tracks in the marshalling yards which has not been repaired or almost repaired since the attack but there is considerable damage to buildings and platform canopies in the main station and sheds and sididngs in the goods depot. In the railway repair shops several large sheds and a probable boiler house are gutted. Many groups of industrial buildings have suffered varying degrees of damage, but few are identified. These include: - Sachsische Webstahlfabrik - Herman Rieman Works - Genossenschafts - Molkerei Chemintz GmbH The town power station (priority 2) has been very severely damaged. Ti fly fra 381st BG 'A' valgte at bombe Plauen, hvor man kastede 22.3 tons sprængbomber og 1.1 tons brandbomber. To fly fra samme formation valgte ifølge amerikanske oplysninger i stedet for at bombe småbyerne Esch og Liedenech. Også fly fra 3rd Air Division bombede Plauen og skader i Plauen er nævnt i dette afsnit. Der var ingen luftværnsskydning over Chemnitz, men på vej til Chemnitz blev de amerikanske bombefly beskudt af tungt luftværnsskyts, der af flybesætningerne blev beskrevet som 'moderate, fairly accurate', hvorved der opstod mindre skader på 11 fly og større skader på fire fly. Jagereskorten kom i luften mellem klokken 07.03 og 07.25 og landede igen mellem klokken 12.10 og 14.00. Det kom ikke til luftkampe i løbet af missionen. En jager nødlandede på kontinentet og Lt Fred L Raffel fra 384th Fighter Squadron/364th Fighter Group sprang ud med faldskærm ved Tongers i Belgien. Hans fly, P- 51D 44-15538 blev knust ved nedstyrtningen, men Lt Raffel kom intet til. Da Second Force bombede Chemnitz den 5. marts 1945 gik man ikke efter de mange fabrikker i byen, men forsøgte at koncentrere sig om rangerbane- gården. Jernbanen blev ramt, men det blev også de omkringliggende bygninger. Second Force Second Force bestod af 152 B-17 fra 3rd Air Division, der ligeledes havde Ruhland Synthetic Oil Refinery som mål. Second Force blev eskorteret af 172 ud af 188 afsendte P-51 fra fire Fighter Groups, der kom på vingerne mellem klokken 07.39 og 08.41. Jagereskorten mødte ingen modstand og mistede heller ingen fly. De landede igen mellem klokken 13.15 og 13.46. Lt Henry W Gauger fra 339th Fighter Group mavelandede på grund af brændstofproblemer hans P-51, hvorved flyet blev kategoriseret som beskadiget Cat. E. Lt Gauger, der stammede fra Milwaukee, kom ikke noget til under nødlandingen. 105 B-17 bombede Chemnitz med 257.4 tons bomber, medens 24 andre bombede Plauen med 59.0 tons bomber. Endelig kastede 9 B-17 22.5 tons bomber over Fulda. Alle tre mål blev af 8th Air Force beskrebet som Chemical Factory, hvilket det ikke var. Bomberne var hovedsageligt rettet mod jernbaneterrænet i de tre nævnte byer. Grundet skydække observerede de bombende besætninger ikke effekten af deres angreb. Enheden sendte 38 B-17 (herunder fire Pathfinder fly) på vingerne mellem klokken 05.40 og 06.37 og der var ingen frafald blandt flybesætningerne. Der var ikke de store problemer under turen mod Ruhland, men da man ankom til målområdet, var Ruhland dækket af skyer og man havde ordre på kun at bombe, hvis man visuelt kunne se målet. 388th BG satte i stedet for kursen mod Chemnitz. Low Group bombede klokken 10.57 fra en højde af 24.000 fod baneterrænet i Chemnitz, medens de to andre (lead og high) bombede baneterrænet i Plauen ved hjælp af PFF metode. Dette blev gjort klokken 11.06 fra en højde af 25.500 fod. 2nd Lt Kittle i B-17 42-97542 mistede to motorer under bomb run. Han kastede sin bombelast og forlod formationen med besked om at han forsøgte at nå russisk territorium. Kittle nåede dog ikke så langt. B- 17eren styrtede klokken 11.25 ned ved Minkwitz ved Friedland/Sudetengau. Kittle og tre andre besætningsmedlemmer blev straks taget til fange af tyskerne, medens den resterende besætning klarede sig lidt længere, før de blev fanget. B-17G 42-97542 var et 'gammelt' fly, der fløj sin første mission til Ludwigshafen den 1. april 1944 og som den 5. marts 1945 var på sit 44. togt. B-17eren var udstyret til at være et PFf fly og havde tilnavnet 'City of Savannah'. Også i Plauen forsøgte Second Force at ramme rangerbanegården, hvilket lykkedes, men der faldt også bomber i den sydlige del af byen. 23 mandlige indbyggere og 51 kvindelige blev dræbt under bombningen. Det var det 5. angreb på Plauen, men byen skulle ikke få fred.

John says, “The American collection there is, I think, the biggest outside the USA. I am content now as I have actually seen and touched a B-24.” f similar size to the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Liberator was a later and more advanced design, the prototype flying in 1939. The B-24 O was built in larger numbers than any other American aircraft of the Second World War. Five production plants delivered 19,256 Lib- erators. The Ford Motor Company alone, using automobile industry mass production techniques, built 6,792 at its Willow Run plant. B-24s flew one of the most famous American bombing raids of the war, Operation Tidal Wave, the raid on Ploesti. On 1 August 1943 they made a low-level attack on the Romanian oil fields, which supplied one-third of German high-octane fuel. Only the Liberator had the range to reach these targets from airfields in North Africa. Of the 179 aircraft dispatched, 56 were lost, and of 1,726 airmen involved, 500 lost their lives. Five airmen received the Medal of Honor, a record for one operation. With its long range, the Liberator also played a key role with the U.S. Navy and RAF Coastal Command against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.

    Schweinfurt - The Battle Within the Battle for the U.S. 8th Air Force Capt David Reichert, USAF After the war, Hitler’s minister of armaments and economics, Albert Speer, said, “The strategic bombing of Germany was the greatest lost battle of the whole war for Germany.”1 Such was not the consensus thinking early in the war, though. Commander of the Army Air Forces, Gen. Henry “Hap” Arnold, had sent one of his best generals and closest friends, Gen. Ira Eaker, over to Great Britain to start what would come to be known as the U.S. Eighth Bomber Command from the ground up. In a push to prove not only to the British but to the world that strategic daylight bombing was the instrument needed to bring Germany to its knees, Eaker sent out over one-hundred missions during the next year-and-a-half, aimed not at the civilian populations of Germany but instead at targets that were supposed to cripple the German war-machine. Facing criticism from both home and abroad over his seemingly slow pace of operations and unnecessarily high casualties, Eaker launched the most daring offensive of the war, sending over one thousand bombers into the air during a one-week span in mid-October, 1943. This week culminated with the second attack against the ball bearing factories in Schweinfurt, Germany, in which over sixty B-17s and six hundred men never returned home. Despite the high losses and unspectacular bombing results, the raid on Schweinfurt did help the war cause by making the policy makers finally realize the urgent need for long-range fighters to escort the bombers deep into enemy territory.

ROBERT, B-24 Liberator Bomber Tail Turret Gunner 734th Bomb Squadron, 453rd Bomb Group, 2nd Air Division, 8th Air Force, USAAF Station 144, Old Buckenham, England he historic D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France by Allied Forces in World War Two, took place 66 years ago on June 6, 1944. But T in my mind, it seems as if it happened yesterday. I can never forget my bird’s eye view of the tremendous Allied invasion from a B-24 Liberator bomber, some 14,000 feet above the English Channel between England and Normandy, France. This D-Day invasion was my sixth mission over enemy-occupied Europe as a 23-year-old B-24 tail turret gunner with the 453rd Bomb Group, 2nd Air Division, 8th Air Force at Old Buckenham Airbase in East Anglia, England. Our airbase was located near the Town of Attleborough, some 20 miles south of the City of Norwich, and about 100 miles north of the City of London. Early on the morning of June 6, 1944, our crew was awakened by the squadron orderly and told to get ready for a 4:00 a.m. bombing mission briefing (we were not yet aware that the long awaited Allied invasion of France was underway). We hurriedly shaved, dressed and rode our bikes to the combat crew mess hall for a typical bombing mission breakfast of fried eggs, bacon and other greasy food.

    USAAF AIRFIELDS Guide and Map Introduction During the Second World War, the East of England became home to hundreds of US airmen. They began arriving in 1942, with many existing RAF (Royal Air Force) airfields made available to the USAAF (United States Army Air Force). By 1943 there were over 100,000 US airmen based in Britain. The largest concentration was in the East of England, where most of the 8th Air Force and some of the 9th were located on near a hundred bases. The 8th Air Force was the largest air striking force ever committed to battle, with the first units arriving in May 1942. The 9th Air Force was re-formed in England in October 1943 - it was the operator of the most formidable troop-carrying force ever assembled. Their arrival had an immediate impact on the East Anglian scene. This was the 'friendly invasion' - a time of jitterbugging dances and big band sounds, while the British got their first taste of peanut butter, chewing gum and Coke. Famous US bandleader Glenn Miller was based in the Bedford area (Bedfordshire), along with his orchestra during the Second World War. Close associations with residents of the region produced long lasting friendships, sometimes even marriage. At The Eagle pub in Cambridge (Cambridgeshire), and The Swan Hotel at Lavenham (Suffolk), airmen left their signatures on the ceiling/walls. The aircraft of the USAAF were the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator - used by the Bombardment Groups (BG); and the P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning and P-47 Thunderbolt - used by the Fighter Groups (FG).

    U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield Historical Brief U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield was a front-line base of the United States Air Force. The facility is located near the city of Sattahip on the Gulf of Siam, approximately 90 miles south of Bangkok. USAF Use during the Vietnam War - USAF Strategic Air Command KC-135 tanker (foreground) and B-52 bomber (landing) at U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield U-Tapao was an important forward operating base for the United States Air Force (USAF) during the Vietnam War. Prior to 1965, U-Tapao was a small Royal Thai Navy airfield. At Dong Muang Air Base near Bangkok the USAF had stationed KC-135 air refueling tankers from Strategic Air Command (SAC) for refueling tactical combat aircraft over the skies of Indochina. Thailand was officially neutral in the Vietnam War and the visibility of the large USAF Boeing tankers in its capital was causing political embarrassment to the Thai government. The USAF 7th Air Force wanted to have additional KC-135's in Thailand and the solution reached was to expand the Naval airfield at U-Tapao and base the tankers there. Expansion of U-Tapao began in October 1965, with the completed new facility opening at the end of 1967. The 11,000-foot runway became operational on 6 July 1966. U-Tapao received its first complement of USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) KC-135 tankers in August 1966. By September, the base was supporting 15 tankers. The 4258th Strategic Wing (SAC) was activated in June 1966 at U-Tapao under the 3rd Air Division, Andersen AFB, Guam.
