Wednesday, October 31, 2018 | Hoag Performance Center | Costa Mesa, Calif. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS HEAD COACH ANTHONY LYNN Opening Statement: “Good afternoon. I tell you, watching [Seahawks Head] Coach [Pete] Carroll, I've known him for a long time. His whole coaching staff, I've either played with or played for. It's a really good coaching staff. Right now, they are doing a heck of a job. I think they are the hottest team in the NFL right now. They have won four out of last five. They are doing it collectively in all three phases — and offensively, they are rushing the ball better than anybody the last five weeks and more rush attempts, that's kind of their formula. Defensively, they are sixth in the league and No. 2 in takeaways. That's something I know he emphasizes a lot. Special teams-wise, they have one of the best returners in the game. He was an All-Pro the last three years. I'm excited to go over there and play them at their place. It's going to be a heck of a challenge for us, our coaching staff and our players, but this is what we need right now. We think we're getting better as a football team and this is going to be one hell of a test.” On DE Joey Bosa: “Joey is going to do some things on the side, but he won't be a part of any team activities today, no.” On the Seattle running game: “Well, you know, their offensive line is powerful.

  • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

Professional Football Researchers Association www.profootballresearchers.com Marty Schottenheimer This article was written by Budd Bailey Marty Schottenheimer was a winner. He’s the only coach with at least 200 NFL wins in the regular season who isn’t in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Marty made bad teams good, and good teams better over the course of a coaching career that lasted more than 30 years. He has a better winning percentage than Chuck Noll, Tom Landry and Marv Levy – all Hall of Famers. “He not only won everywhere he went, but he won immediately everywhere he went,” wrote Ernie Accorsi in the forward to Schottenheimer’s autobiography. “That is rare, believe me.” The blemish in his resume is that he didn’t win the next-to-last game of the NFL season, let alone the last game. The easy comparison is to Chuck Knox, another fine coach from Western Pennsylvania who won a lot of games but never took that last step either. In other words, Schottenheimer never made it to a Super Bowl as a head coach. Even so, he ranks with the best in the coaching business in his time. Martin Edward Schottenheimer was born on September 23, 1943, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. That’s about 22 miles from Pittsburgh to the southwest. As you might have guessed, that part of the world is rich in two things: minerals and football players. • Opportunity on the Road to Success by Logan Underwood
Opportunity on the Road to Success By Logan Underwood In the sea of society, many drift under the influence of powerful undercurrents of reality. People are shaped by the colour of our skin, the places we grew up, and the wealth of our parents. These factors have a profound impact on the direction in which people travel in their lives. The currents that control our lives are powerful because they pull the strings that define our paths. They change the scenery and the obstacles by putting some individuals on a pedestal while putting others on a much more challenging journey. Societal norms of nepotism and connections disproportionally place minorities at a disadvantage from their white colleagues as they are promoted. In 2003 the National Football League (NFL) instituted the Rooney Rule, which required one minority to be interviewed during the head coach hiring process (Carroll, 2018). The rule was put in action to make the number of minority coaches more representative of a sport that's players were 69.0% African American (Lapchick, 2019). As the most recent season coaching hiring season concluded, it became clear that the number of minority coaches with jobs would decrease significantly. Figure 1 (Payne, 2019) In the 2020 season, it will be the second season that 12.5% of coaches will be of colour. It is the lowest two-season stretch since the Rooney Rule was adopted in two thousand three (Lapchick, 2019). The 2019 season was important in determining the schematic direction of the league's coaches. Coaches Marvin Lewis, Todd Bowles, Steven Wilks, and Vance Joseph, who were all African American, were fired.
